भागादौडी़ भरे जीवन की व्यस्तताओं के बीच जब कभी भी थोडा़-बहुत वक्त मिलता है, किशोरवय की स्मृतियां चलचित्र की भांति आंखों में तैरने लगती हैं। तब आज के जैसे संसाधन नहीं थे। मोबाइल तो छोडि़ए, लैंडलाइन फोन तक इक्का-दुक्का घरों में ही हुआ करता था। जिनके घरों में फोन थे, उनके कालर हमेशा खडे़ रहते थे। लेकिन, हम भी उस दौर के शहंशाह थे। हमारे पास नंगे पैर दौड़ने, दोस्तों के साथ नहर में नहाने, बागीचों में चोरी-छिपे आम-लीची के फल तोड़ने, घंटों पतंग उडा़ने या कंचे खेलने, जेठ की तपती दुपहरी में किसी घने दरख्त के नीचे ताश के पत्ते फेंटने और एक रुपये में एक घंटे तक साइकिल चलाने की पूरी आजादी थी। डांट भी पड़ती थी, लेकिन उसे हम कुछ देर में ही भूल जाया करते और फिर नई शरारत शुरू हो जाती।

मेरे साथ एक सुखद संयोग यह भी रहा कि दस-बारह साल की उम्र से ही कामिक्स पढ़ने की आदत पड़ गई थी। इंद्रजाल व डायमंड कामिक्स सीरीज की कितनी किताबें पढी़ं, ठीक-ठीक बता पाना कठिन है। मोटू-पतलू, लंबू-छोटू, चाचा चौधरी और साबू, लोथार और मैनड्रैक, द फैंटम (बेताल), बहादुर, रिप किर्बी, फ्लैश गोर्डन, गार्थ, बज्ज सायर, पिंकी, बिल्लू, श्रीमती जी, रमन, पलटू, महाबली शाका, अंकुर, दाबू, स्पाइडरमैन, सुपरमैन, नागराज, राजन-इकबाल, जासूस चक्रम, ताऊजी, लंबू-मोटू, जेम्स बांड जैसे तमाम पात्र हैं, जिन्हें मैंने जी-भरकर पढा़। इसके अलावा नंदन, चंपक, मधु मुस्कान, चंदामामा, तेनालीराम आदि भी मेरी प्रिय पुस्तकें रही। तब शहरभर में जिसके पास भी कामिक्स होती थी, उससे हम किसी न किसी तरह दोस्ती गांठ ही लेते थे।

खास बात यह कि तब इन पुस्तकों का संरक्षक मैं ही होता था। सारे दोस्त घरवालों के डर से अपनी किताबें मेरे पास जमा कर देते थे और फिर जब भी वक्त मिलता, पढ़ने के लिए ले जाया करते। इससे मुझे सबसे ज्यादा किताबें पढ़ने को मिल जाया करती थीं। किताबों की अदला-बदली भी खूब होती थी। यानी जो किताबें मैं पढ़ लेता था, उन्हें दूसरे को देकर उससे उन किताबों को ले आता, जो मेरी पढी़ हुई नहीं होती थीं। धीरे-धीरे किताबें पढ़ने का नशा इस कदर बढ़ गया कि हम किराये पर भी किताबें लाने लगे। इसके लिए हम पैसों का इंतजाम कबाड़ बेचकर करते थे। कबाड़ इकट्ठा करने का भी हमारा निराला अंदाज हुआ करता था। हम जहां भी बिजली की टूटी तार के टुकडे़ मिलते, उठा लाते और फिर उन्हें गलाकर तांबा या एल्यूमिनियम अलग कर लेते। 

महीनेभर में हमारे पास तांबा व एल्यूमिनियम के तारों का अच्छा-खासा स्टाक जमा हो जाता। फिर हम मोटे-से पत्थर पर तार को लपेटकर उसका गोला बना लेते। इससे उसका भार बढ़ जाता था और कबाडी़ से अच्छे-खासे पैसे मिल जाते। तांबे वाले गोले के ज्यादा मिलते थे। इसके अलावा हम लोहा इकट्ठा कर भी बेचते थे। पैसे रखने की जिम्मेदारी भी मेरी ही होती थी, क्योंकि मेरे पास एक-एक पाई सुरक्षित रहती थी। समय के साथ कामिक्स के बजाय उपन्यास पढ़ने का चस्का लग गया। सुरेंद्र मोहन पाठक, वेदप्रकाश शर्मा, कर्नल राणा, वेद प्रकाश कांबोज, कैप्टन वीरेंद्र, केशव पंडित, जेम्स हेडली चेइज का तो मैं लगभग हर उपन्यास पढ़ता है। रात को टार्च की रोशनी में भी। ये उपन्यास तब दस-दस रुपये में मिल जाया करते थे।

इसके साथ ही पतंग उडा़ने का भी मैं बेदह शौकीन रहा, लेकिन पतंग खरीदकर बहुत कम उडा़ईं। अपनी बनाई पतंग ही मैं ज्यादातर उडा़या करता था। पतंग लंबे समय तक चले, इसलिए पेज लडा़ना मुझे पसंद नहीं था। पतंग मैं बहुत ऊंचाई तक उडा़ता था। इसके लिए चरखी सद्दी व मांझा से भरी रहती थी। मांझा मैं स्वयं भी तैयार करता था। पतला व मोटा मांझा, दोनों ही मेरी पसंद हुआ करते थे। जब पतंग का सीजन नहीं होता था, तब जमकर कंचे खेले जाते थे। मेरे पास तब लगभग दो किलो तरह-तरह के कंचे थे। सारे दोस्तों के कंचे मेरे पास ही जमा रहते थे। जेब में जब दो-चार रुपये होते तो कुछ नए कंचे मैं बाजार से भी खरीद लाता था। वर्षों तक मेरे पास कंचों का खजाना रहा, बाद में उसे मैंने मोहल्ले के बच्चों में बांट दिया।

Whenever we get some time in the midst of the hectic life's hectic life, the memories of adolescence start floating in the eyes like a movie.  Then there were no such resources as today.  Leave the mobile, landline phone used to be in few homes.  Those who had phones in their homes, their callers were always standing.  But, we were also the emperors of that era.  We have the opportunity to run barefoot, bathe in the canal with friends, stealthily pluck mango-litchis in the gardens, fly kites or play marbles for hours, throw cards under a thick tree in the scorching afternoon of the brother-in-law and spend an hour for one rupee.  Till now there was complete freedom to ride a bicycle.  There was scolding too, but we would have forgotten it in a while and then a new mischief would start.

I also had a happy coincidence that from the age of ten or twelve, I had got into the habit of reading comics.  It is difficult to tell exactly how many books of Indrajal and Diamond Comics series I have read.  Motu-Patlu, Lambu-Chhotu, Chacha Chaudhary and Sabu, Lothar and Mandrake, The Phantom (Betal), Bahadur, Rip Kirby, Flash Gordon, Garth, Buzz Sawyer, Pinky, Billu, Mrs. Ji, Raman, Paltu, Mahabali Shaka,  There are many characters like Ankur, Dabu, Spiderman, Superman, Nagraj, Rajan-Iqbal, Detective Chakram, Tauji, Lambu-Motu, James Bond, which I read wholeheartedly.  Apart from this, Nandan, Champak, Madhu Muskan, Chandamama, Tenaliram etc. were also my favorite books.  Then we used to take some kind of friendship knot with whoever had comics across the city.

The special thing is that I was the custodian of these books then.  All the friends used to deposit their books with me for fear of family members and then whenever they got time, they used to take them to read.  This used to get me to read most of the books.  There was also a lot of exchange of books.  That is, giving the books that I used to read, giving them to others, I would have brought those books which were not read by me.  Gradually, the intoxication of reading books increased so much that we started bringing books on rent too.  For this, we used to arrange money by selling junk.  We also used to have a unique way of collecting junk.  Wherever we found pieces of broken electrical wire, we would pick them up and then melt them to separate copper or aluminum.

Within a month, we would have accumulated a good stock of copper and aluminum wires.  Then we would wrap the wire on a thick stone and make a circle out of it.  Due to this his load would increase and he would get a lot of money from junk.  Copper balls were found more.  Apart from this, we used to collect iron and sell it.  It was also my responsibility to keep the money, because I had every pie safe with me.  Over time, instead of comics, I got addicted to reading novels.  I read almost every novel of Surendra Mohan Pathak, Vedprakash Sharma, Colonel Rana, Ved Prakash Kamboj, Captain Virendra, Keshav Pandit, James Headley Chaise.  Even in torchlight at night.  These novels used to be available for ten rupees then.

Along with this, I was also very fond of flying kites, but bought kites and flew very little.  I used to fly mostly kites made by myself.  The kites lasted a long time, so I didn't like page fighting.  I used to fly kites very high.  For this, the winch was filled with Saddi and Manjha.  I used to prepare Manjha myself.  Thin and thick manjha, both used to be my favourite.  When there was no kite season, marbles were played fiercely.  I had about two kilos of different types of marbles then.  All the friends' marbles used to be stored near me.  When I had two or four rupees in my pocket, I used to buy some marbles from the market.  For years I had a treasure trove of marbles, later I distributed them among the children of the locality.
