रात के बारह बज चुके हैं, लेकिन खाना अभी तैयार नहीं हुआ। होता भी कैसे, बनाना ही साढे़ ग्यारह बजे शुरू किया। हम (मैं और सुमन सेमवाल) इस समय देहरादून शहर से लगभग 12 किमी दूर वन विभाग के झाझरा स्थित विश्राम गृह में हैं। दस बजे के आसपास हम यहां पहुंचे। उम्मीद थी कि साथी विजय जोशी अपने ममेरे भाई के साथ हमसे पहले विश्रामगृह पहुंचकर भोजन बनाने की तैयारी में जुट गए होंगे, लेकिन वो तो तब तक रास्ते में ही थे। सुमन से पता चला कि मसूरी से डाकपत्थर होते हुए झाझरा पहुंच रहे हैं। वीकली आफ होने के कारण देहरादून से वो सुबह ही मसूरी की ओर निकल पडे़ थे।
रात नौ बजे के आसपास हम आफिस से झाझरा के लिए निकले। सोचा कल गणतंत्र दिवस का जश्न भीड़भाड़ से दूर एकांत में मनाएंगे, इसलिए रात को ही निकलना बेहतर समझा। अभी हमने सौ मीटर का फासला ही तय किया होगा कि विजय का फोन आ गया। बोला, "चिकन लेते हुए आना, यहां रास्ते में कहीं नहीं मिल रहा।" पटेल नगर में आफिस से थोडा़ दूर ही चिकन शाप है, सो हम कार खडी़ कर पैदल ही चिकन लेने पहुंचे। सुमन ने साढे़ तीन किलो चिकन पैक कराया और फिर पकड़ ली सीधे गंतव्य की राह। हमें लग रहा था कि विजय विश्रामगृह में पहुंच चुका है। यह भ्रम हमें तब हुआ, जब झाझरा फारेस्ट कैंपस में पहुंचकर हमने विजय से विश्रामगृह का रास्ता पूछा। वो जिस अंदाज में हमें गाइड कर रहा था, उससे कोई भी उसके विश्रामगृह में होने का अनुमान लगाता।
खैर! जब हम विश्रामगृह पहुंचे, तो वहां सन्नाटा पसरा हुआ था। केयर टेकर ने हमारे रूम दिखाए और फिर किचन का ताला खोला। साथ ही हमारे कुछ पूछने से पहले ही अपनी पट्टी बंधी अंगुली दिखाते हुए बोला, "सर! मैं खाना नहीं बना पाऊंगा।" हमने कहा, "कोई बात नहीं, आप सामान दिखा दो, हम खुद निकालकर बना लेंगे।" इस पर केयर टेकर का कहना था कि "सिवाय नमक, मिर्च व गर्म मसाले के यहां कुछ नहीं है।" वह तो गनीमत रही कि तब तक विजय झाझरा नहीं पहुंचा था, अन्यथा हम मुश्किल में पड़ गए होते। हमने फोन पर विजय को तेल, चावल, टमाटर, प्याज, लहसुन, आदरक, हरी मिर्च आदि भी ले आने को कह दिया। साथ ही खुद चिकन को साफ करने में जुट गए। तकरीबान आधा घंटे बाद विजय भी दल-बल के साथ विश्रामगृह पहुंच गया। कुल सात लोग उसके साथ थे।वातावरण में ठंड भी काफी बढ़ चुकी थी।
खैर! अब सामान हमारे पास था, इसलिए पूरी तल्लीनता से भोजन बनाने में जुट गए। फटाफट एक चूल्हे में चिकन चढा़या और एक में चावल। इसके अलावा एक बडी़ प्लेट में सलाद भी काटे जा चुके थे। कुछ साथियों के लिए अलग से इंतजाम था, इसलिए सलाद के बगैर गुजर कहां होने वाली थी।
अब आगे का किस्सा...। खाना बनकर तैयार हो चुका है। लेकिन, भाई लोगों के अभी गिलास खाली नहीं हुए। मुझमें उन जैसा धैर्य नहीं है, इसलिए मैंने तो चुपचाप थाली लागाई और भोजन कर लिया। रात के तीन बज चुके हैं। सोना जरूरी है, तभी सुबह नौ-दस बजे तक नींद खुल पाएगी। भाई लोग तो सो लेंगे आराम से। मुझे तो जोरदार नींद आ रही है। अच्छा! सुबह मिलते हैं। शुभ रात्रि!!!

Jhajra Rest House Party

It is twelve o'clock at night, but the food is not ready yet. Whatever happens, the making started at half past eleven. We (me and Suman Semwal) are currently in the rest house at Jhajhra, Forest Department, about 12 km from the city of Dehradun. We arrived here around ten o'clock. It was expected that fellow Vijay Joshi along with his cousin would reach the rest house before us and get ready to prepare food, but he was still on the way. Suman came to know that he is reaching Jhajra via Mussoorie by post stone. Due to the weekly off, he had left from Dehradun towards Mussoorie in the morning.
Around 9 o'clock in the night, we left the office for Jhajra. Thought tomorrow would celebrate Republic Day in a secluded place away from the crowds, so it was better to leave at night. Now we have decided the distance of hundred meters that Vijay's call has come. Said, "Come with the chicken, I can't find it anywhere on the way." There is a chicken shop just a short distance away from the office in Patel Nagar, so we drove to the car and came to pick up the chicken on foot. Suman packed three and a half kilos of chicken and then caught the path of direct destination. We felt that Vijay had reached the rest house. This confusion occurred to us when we reached the Jhajhra Forest Campus and asked Vijay the way to the rest house. The way he was guiding us, no one would have guessed that he was in his rest house.
Well! When we reached the rest house, there was silence. The caretaker showed us our rooms and then opened the kitchen lock. Also, before we asked anything, showing his bandaged finger, he said, "Sir, I will not be able to cook." We said, "Never mind, you show the stuff, we will make it out ourselves." On this, Care Taker said that "There is nothing except salt, chilli and hot spices". It was a privilege that Vijay had not reached Jhajhara by then, otherwise we would have been in trouble. We told Vijay to bring oil, rice, tomatoes, onions, garlic, ginger, green chillies etc. on the phone as well. Simultaneously started cleaning the chicken. After about half an hour, Vijay too reached the rest house with a team force. A total of seven people were with him. The cold had also increased significantly in the atmosphere.
Well! Now we had the goods, so we started making food with utmost vigor. Instantly serve chicken in a stove and rice in one. Apart from this, salads were also cut in a big plate. There was a separate arrangement for some companions, so where was going to pass without salad.
Now the story ahead…. The food is ready. However, the brothers have not emptied the glasses yet. I do not have patience like them, so I quietly put a plate and ate it. It's three o'clock in the night It is necessary to sleep, then sleep will be open till 9-10 AM. Brother people will sleep comfortably. I am feeling very sleepy. good!
