इस बार लगभग दो माह बाद घर आना हुआ। बीच में तमाम कारणों से छुट्टी नहीं मिल पा रही थी, इसलिए मैंने भी सोचा कि क्यों न 21 जून से दो-एक दिन पहले छुट्टी ली जाए। ग्रेगोरी कैलेंडर के हिसाब से मेरा जन्मदिन 21 जून को पड़ता है, जबकि विक्रमी कैलेंडर के हिसाब से छह गते आषाढ़। यह तिथि अब तक 20 जून को ही पड़ती आ रही है। मैं 18 जून को कोटद्वार पहुंच गया था। इस बार देहरादून में भी बेहाल कर देने वाली गर्मी पड़ रही है और कोटद्वार के तो फिर कहने ही क्या। यहां तो घर से बाहर निकलने का भी साहस नहीं हो पा रहा, लेकिन कहते हैं ना, अपना शहर-अपना गांव हर हाल में सुनून का ही एहसास कराते हैं। इसलिए कोटद्वार में गर्मी-सर्दी के मेरे लिए कोई मायने नहीं हैं।
खैर! फिलहाल जन्मदिन मना लिया जाए। सच कहूं तो मेरे लिए कभी कोई दिन कम-ज्यादा अहमियत वाला नहीं रहा। हां! शादी के कुछ वर्ष बाद तक जन्मदिन के दिन घर वाले पंडित बुलाकर पूजन जरूर करवा लेते थे। इसी बहाने खीर-रायता व पकौडि़यां भी बन जाती थीं। लेकिन, पिछले दस-बारह साल से रजनी के सिवा किसी को इसमें रुचि नहीं रह गई। वह हर साल 20 या 21 जून को पकौडी़ बनाकर मेरा जन्मदिन मना लेती है। जब कभी इस दौरान मैं भी छुट्टी पर होता हूं तो उसकी खुशी में शामिल हो जाता हूं। लेकिन, ऐसा मौका बीते 15 साल में दो-तीन बार ही मिल पाया है।
इस बार रजनी का विचार था कि पहले सुबह घर पर दाल व बेसन की पकौडी़ बनाएंगे और फिर बच्चों के साथ उनके नानी-नाना के घर (मेरे ससुराल) रतनपुर चले चलेंगे। वहां इन दिनों मेरी दोनों सालियां आई हुई हैं, सो इसी बहाने सब एक साथ भोजन भी कर लेंगे। मुझे इसमें क्या आपत्ति होती भला। हालांकि, आजकल बडी़ बिटिया की परीक्षा चल रही हैं, जिससे यह सुनिश्चित नहीं पा रहा था कि जाया कब जाए। दिन में या शाम को। वैसे साथ बैठकर भोजन करने का आनंद तो शाम को ही है।
आखिर आ ही गया 21 जून

रजनी ने सुबह ही चार तरह की पकौडि़यां बना ली थी। तय हुआ कि छोटी बिटिया, वो और मैं रतनपुर हो आते हैं। बडी़ बिटिया तो पढा़ई में मशगूल थी, इसलिए उसने जाने से इन्कार कर दिया। इसलिए मैंने रजनी से आग्रह किया कि वो छोटी बिटिया के साथ रतनपुर हो आए। मेरी वैसे भी सास-ससुर जी व बडी़ साली से फोन पर बात हो गई है। हम सब कल-परसों भी जा सकते हैं। तभी साथ भोजन कर लेंगे। आज नाश्ता भी चाय-पकौडी़ का ही हुआ। इसके बाद बिटिया के साथ रजनी अपने मायके चली गई। इसी बीच हमेशा की तरह ससुरजी भी बच्चों के लिए फल लेकर घर पर पहुंच गए, लेकिन बैठे सिर्फ पांच मिनट ही। क्योंकि, तब तक उनके लिए रजनी का फोन आ गया था। रजनी तकरीबन दो घंटे मायके में रही और फिर दोपहर का भोजन बनाने के लिए लौट आई।
खास मेहमान

भोजन करने के बाद मैं कपड़ों पर इस्त्री करने में तल्लीन हो गया। लगभग एक घंटा बीता होगा कि तभी ससुरजी और दोनों सालियां भी आ पहुंचीं। मेरे जन्मदिन के मौके पर पहली बार दोनों सालियां आई थीं, इसलिए उनकी खातिरदारी तो बनती ही थी। सो, रजनी ने तत्काल भेलपूरी से उनका स्वागत किया। साथ में सभी ने चाय की चुस्कियां भी लीं। कुछ देर इधर-उधर की बातें होती रहीं और फिर मेहमानों ने विदाई ली। इस बीच बिजली भी गुल हो गई, लिहाजा मुझे इस्त्री करने का कार्य आधे में छोड़ना पडा़। बाकी कपडो़ं पर अब कल इस्त्री होगी।
बिटिया का सरप्राइज

शाम लगभग आठ बजे के आसपास हम चर्चा कर रहे थे कि भोजन में क्या बनाया जाए कि तभी छोटी बिटिया केक, पिज्जा, मोमो व दो लीटर वाली फ्रूटी की बोतल लेकर प्रकट हुई। यानी शाम का कंप्लीट भोजन। मेरे ही क्या, हम सबके लिए यह अप्रत्याशित था। उसे इस सरप्राइज के साथ देखकर मुझे बीते वर्ष 29 सितंबर का दिन याद हो आया। तब उसने मम्मी को भी इसी प्रकार सरप्राइज दिया था। इस सब पर कितने पैसे खर्च हुए, उसने यह पूछने पर भी नहीं बताया। लेकिन, मेरा अनुमान है कि सात सौ रुपये के आसपास तो खर्च हुए ही होंगे। यह सब उसने अपनी पाकेट मनी से खर्च किया।
नए कपडे़ पहनकर काटा केक

अब केक तो आ ही चुका था, सो मैं भी जीवन में पहली बार नए अंदाज में जन्मदिन मनाने की तैयारी करने लगा। केक काटने के फोटो भी उतारे जाने थे, इसलिए नए कपडे़ पहनना जरूरी था। बिटिया ने ही केक पर मोमबत्तियां सजाईं और फिर मैंने केक काटने की औपचारिकता पूरी की। सभी ने बैठकर केक खाया। मोमो और पिज्जा खाने के बाद तो भोजन की जरूरत ही नहीं रही। हम सोच रहे थे कि अगर बिटिया के सरप्राइज का जरा भी इल्म होता तो सालियों को भी रोक लेते। पर, उसने तो इस सबकी भनक तक नहीं लगने दी। जबकि केक का आर्डर शायद उसने सुबह ही कर दिया था। खैर! मेरे लिए तो यह बिल्कुल नई अनुभूति है। वैसे भी बच्चों की खुशी में शामिल होना ही चाहिए। यही आज के दौर की जरूरत है। अन्यथा आउट डेटेज होनै में वक्त कहां लगता है।

Although holidays are always relaxing, but this time the holidays have brought a different feeling in life. One, my birthday falls in the midst of these holidays and more importantly, for the first time I got a chance to celebrate my birthday by cutting a cake. That too after half a century of life has passed thanks to the younger daughter Sakshi. ... and we also came to know about it around eight o'clock in the evening, when the daughter suddenly appeared with a two liter bottle of cake, momo, pizza and fruity. Earlier, on the birthday of Mummy (Rajni) too, he had given a surprise in the same style. Maybe that's why he had saved pocket money to celebrate my birthday too.
This time I had to come home after about two months. Due to various reasons, I was not able to get leave in between, so I also thought why not take a day or two leave before June 21. According to the Gregorian calendar, my birthday falls on 21st June, while according to the Vikrami calendar, it is six gata ashadha. Till now this date is falling on 20th June only. I had reached Kotdwar on 18th June. This time there is a deplorable heat in Dehradun too and what to say about Kotdwar. Here, I am unable to even get the courage to step out of the house, but it is said that your city and your village always make you feel heard. That's why summer and winter in Kotdwar have no meaning for me.
So! For now, the birthday should be celebrated. To be honest, no day has ever been more or less important to me. Yes! After a few years of marriage, on the day of the birthday, the family priests used to call and get the worship done. Kheer-raita and dumplings were also made on this pretext. But, for the last ten-twelve years, no one was interested in it except Rajni. She celebrates my birthday every year by making dumplings on 20 or 21 June. Whenever I am also on holiday during this time, I join in his happiness. But, such an opportunity has been available only two-three times in the last 15 years.
This time Rajni's idea was to first make dal and gram flour dumplings at home in the morning and then go to her maternal grandparents' house (my in-laws' house) Ratanpur with the children. Both my sisters-in-law have come there these days, so on this pretext, everyone will have food together. What objection would I have in this? However, nowadays the elder daughter's examination is going on, due to which she was not sure when to go. in the day or in the evening. By the way, the pleasure of having a meal together is only in the evening.
Finally June 21 has arrived

Rajni had made four types of dumplings in the morning itself. It was decided that little daughter, she and I come to Ratanpur. The elder daughter was busy with her studies, so she refused to go. That's why I requested Rajni to come to Ratanpur with the little daughter. Anyway, I have talked to my mother-in-law and elder sister-in-law on the phone. We can all go tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. Then we'll have dinner together. Today breakfast was also of tea and dumplings. After this, Rajni went to her maternal home with the daughter. Meanwhile, as usual, the father-in-law also reached home with fruits for the children, but sat for only five minutes. Because, by then Rajni's call had come for him. Rajni stayed in the maternal house for about two hours and then returned to make lunch.

After having a meal I got engrossed in ironing the clothes. About an hour must have passed when the father-in-law and both the sisters-in-law also arrived. On the occasion of my birthday, both the sisters-in-law had come for the first time, so their care had to be made. So, Rajni immediately welcomed him from Bhelpuri. Together everyone took sips of tea. Talks continued for some time here and there and then the guests bid farewell. Meanwhile, the electricity also went out, so I had to leave the ironing job in half. The rest of the clothes will now be ironed tomorrow.
Daughter's surprise

Around eight o'clock in the evening, we were discussing what to make in the meal when the little girl appeared with cake, pizza, momos and a two-liter bottle of Frooti. That is, the complete meal of the evening. What about me, it was unexpected for all of us. Seeing him with this surprise, I remembered the day of 29th September last year. Then he surprised his mother in the same way. How much money was spent on all this, he did not tell even when asked. But, I estimate that around seven hundred rupees must have been spent. He spent all this with his pocket money.
Cut cake wearing new clothes

The cake had already arrived, so for the first time in my life, I started preparing to celebrate my birthday in a new way. Photos of cake cutting were also to be taken down, so it was necessary to wear new clothes. It was the daughter who decorated the candles on the cake and then I completed the formality of cutting the cake. Everyone sat down and ate the cake. After eating momos and pizza, there was no need for food. We were thinking that if there was any knowledge of the daughter's surprise, then we would have stopped the sisters-in-law too. But, he didn't even let him know about it. Whereas he had probably ordered the cake in the morning itself. So! For me this is a completely new feeling. Anyway, you must be involved in the happiness of the children. This is the need of today's era. Otherwise where does it take time to have out dates?
