Water in petrol

--------------------

Dinesh Kukreti

Whatever I wanted, it happened and till this afternoon the weather was kind.  The biggest advantage of this was that I got a chance to clean the tank of the bike.  However, due to this, I could not give time to yoga practice.  Actually, after bathing, I started my bike and started towards the garage located in Indira Nagar.  It was ten o'clock in the morning, but the owner of the garage had not yet reached the shop.  However, a boy was definitely present there and was busy working.  I asked the boy about the shop owner and he told him to reach in ten minutes.  What kind of problem is there in the bike, I told him in detail.

On this the boy said - "It will take time to clean the tank."

"Approximately how much" - I asked.

"That's one and a half hours," said the boy.

"It will be enough" - I said and sat there on a chair.  On the other hand, the boy also started taking off the tank from the bike.  It would have taken ten minutes for him to take out the tank.  After this he started extracting petrol from the pipe, then two bottles of two liters each were full.  There must have been one liter of water in it.  Meanwhile the owner of the garage also arrived.  When I asked him the solution to this problem of filling water in the tank, he told him to make a cover for it.  Said, "Brother! The day you bring the bike for service, I will also take the cover on the tank cover to the city on the same day."

I also told him that the engine oil was constantly pouring out due to a loose screw under the engine, so I tightened it with a cloth.  On this the garage owner said, "I will get the screws fixed the same day and you will get the bike by 3 pm."

I said, "I will bring the bike for service after the rain stops in a day or two" and came back with the bike.  The mechanic had put more than a liter of petrol back in the tank.  Apart from this, by going to the pump, I also got two liters of petrol poured.  However, I was very worried about wasting about two and a half liters of petrol.  It was bound to happen.  After all, petrol is a hundred rupees a liter and I have to fill my pocket loosely.  The family budget messes up, so different.

However!  Before returning home at night, I covered the petrol tank with a plastic cover and taped it well.  I had taken the tape from home while coming to the office.  The comforting thing was that after getting the tank cleaned, the bike stopped stopping intermittently.  Also only one hundred rupees were spent.  This calms my mind today.  Till morning, due to this turmoil, the mind was disturbed that it would take a lot of lime.  In such a situation, neither I was able to sleep properly, nor did I feel like watching YouTube channel.  But today I will sleep peacefully.  The eyelids becoming heavy are pointing in this direction.

Rain increasing difficulties

-----------------------------------

Dinesh Kukreti

This time monsoon is in full swing.  In the beginning it seemed that this year too the rainy season would go away without rain, but from the end of Ashadh it started raining badly.  In Sawan, it rains almost daily.  This is bound to increase the difficulties of working people like us.  Now see, due to continuous rain, water has come in the tank of the bike.  This causes the engine to stop at some point.  After three or four days, this problem has become more and more serious.  If the rain stops, go to the mechanic, but this is not happening either.  Friend Naval Kishore is also constantly calling his house and I was being avoided by saying "yes-yes" till now.  But, two days ago, I made a promise to come on Sunday.

Today is sunday.  In the morning, Naval's call came that, "Reaching by 12.30 pm, I will come to pick you up on the road."  Due to his daughter's illness, he is staying in Dehradun and has taken a two-room set on rent at Ajabpur-Saraswati Vihar.  Whereas, his joining school is in Gweel-Jaspur, Dhangu.  The mood of the weather is still rough today.  Looks like it will rain, but I have also decided that today I will meet Naval in any situation.  So, I left the house around 11.30 pm, but by the time we reached Patel Nagar, it started drizzling.  The raincoat is also kept in the bag of the bike, but it cannot be worn on the road.  The biggest problem is due to frequent shutdown of the bike.

So!  At 12 o'clock I reached near Canara Bank on Rispana Bypass Highway.  There Naval was already waiting for me.  The house where he lives is inside the street, so I needed someone to guide me.  About three years later, I was meeting Naval.  She is very upset due to the daughter's illness, in such a situation, if she meets someone close, she gets a lot of relief.  By sharing the pain with each other, the burden of the mind also becomes lighter.  That's why the happiness was clearly visible on his face meeting me.  I have been at Naval's house for almost two hours.  Had food there too.  He had made rice, myrobalan dal, spinach kafali and kheer from his maternal uncle.

Around 3.45 pm, I left for the office from Naval's room.  The bike had to bother me, so I made up my mind that I will definitely go to the mechanic tomorrow i.e. on Monday.  I am also thinking of getting a new bike on installments next year and renewing this bike and selling it for whatever it is sold for.  Every rain for two-three years is troubling like this.  So!  These are later things, for now, tomorrow I have to go to the mechanic to get the tank cleaned.

In the midst of this chaos, it must have taken me some twenty minutes to reach the office.  Today there was no talk in the house, so the first thing to do after coming to the library was to call home.  However, Rajni's call came around 1.30 pm, but I was at Naval's house then, so disconnected the call saying "will talk later".  It must have been about fifteen minutes, then I got busy with my work.  ...It's twelve o'clock at night and I'm getting ready to go to bed.  Right now, I will watch a few YouTube channels for some time, listen to some ghazals and then go into the lap of sleep.

Doon return amid rain

-----------------------------

Dinesh Kukreti

It has been raining since night.  Can't say when it will stop.  This is also the nature of the rainy season.  But, I have to reach Dehradun today by all means, so along with leaving the bed, I have started my preparations.  The food is also ready.  On the returning day, I prefer to eat dal-bhaat (lentil-rice) instead of roti, hence my choice of food is prepared.  I have also packed the bag and kept it aside and sat on the ground, tying a cross for food.  I prefer to eat food while sitting on the ground.  At home, it is a part of discipline for me.  Science also considers it best to have food sitting comfortably on the ground, that's all!  The place should be clean.  Then I am a student of science.

Meanwhile, when Rajni asked to bring more rice, I refused.  Where do you eat so much in the morning?  It will be seen, if I feel hungry during the day, I will eat fruits.  Rajni has kept fruits, biscuits, namkeen - everything in the bag.  The rain may still continue, but it is quarter past nine and I am in a hurry to reach Dehradun.  know why?  Hey!  Because of water.  In fact, in the area where I live, there is a severe shortage of water in summers.  This year is a little more.  The water comes around 12 noon and stops shortly after.  After this, there is time for water to come around 2.30 pm, but there is no guarantee that it will come daily.  Water comes at 11 o'clock in the night, but these days there is a situation of uncertainty.  This is the main reason for my early departure.

I left the house at exactly nine:15 in the middle of the rain.  It took 20 minutes to reach the taxi stand located at Najibabad Road Chowk.  At that time a taxi was leaving for Dehradun.  Then another taxi driver started calling Dehradun-Dehradun.  I sat in the middle seat in that.  It took half an hour, to fill the taxi to full and then the taxi left for Dehradun between the showers.  Well, I fall asleep as soon as I sit in a bus-taxi or car, but today I don't know why it is not coming near me.  I have also kept the bag with me because of the rain.  There is a problem, but there is no other option than this.  So!  All this goes on, if there are no difficulties then what is the meaning of living.  Man progresses only through struggle.

Now I am in Haridwar.  The Ganges is flowing at its full speed.  At this time there is boundless water in it, but the beauty is also wonderful.  To be honest, just seeing a glimpse of the Ganges gives a feeling of immense joy to the mind.  How fortunate indeed we are to have a wonderful river like the Ganges.  Whose whole world longs to touch.  The taxi is moving fast on the highway.  Now it will take at most one-and-a-half hours to reach Dehradun.  The landing of two passengers at Bhaniyawala has brought a lot of relief.  Now I put the bag on the seat itself.  Hey!  What is this?  As soon as he reached Doiwala, the driver put the taxi on the Dudhli route.

Incidentally, no one has to get down before the Rispana bridge in Dehradun, so there is no objection to going through the Dudhli route.  The driver says that he has to buy some essential items on the way.  This road is very beautiful.  Greenery is visible all around.  There is a dense forest on one side of the road, so wildlife is easily visible in the morning and evening on this route.  Elephants sometimes come on the road even in the afternoon.  As we entered the Dehradun border, the driver stopped the taxi in front of a shop and pointed to two persons sitting there (one young and one old) asking them to deliver the goods.  The old man picked up the carpet kept on the counter and took out two packets and handed them to the driver.

Seeing the packet, it seemed as if there were packets of gram, but the question was arising in the mind that why the shopkeeper had kept these packets hidden.  After taking the goods, the driver proceeded to take the taxi and while talking to the person sitting nearby looking at him, he said – this is intoxication and it is found here.  That's why I had to come from here.  However, no one paid heed to his words.  On reaching the highway further, he turned the steering response of the taxi towards the bridge.  The rain had stopped till drizzle, but it intensified again as soon as I got down from the taxi.  I opened my umbrella and started waiting for Vikram (auto) at the corner of Haridwar road.  Vikram was found with a long delay and due to the jam all along the way, it was too late to reach Prince Chowk.

Vikram got late at Prince Chowk too, so it took me two o'clock to reach the room.  The good thing is that around 2.30 pm the water also came.  I quickly filled two buckets and left for the office with ease.  However, due to haste, I did not get a chance to eat the fruit.  After eight-and-a-half hours I have now reached the room.  It is eleven o'clock in the night and being tired, I am finding it best to make porridge at the moment.  It is light, nutritious and digestible food.  The rest will be seen in the early morning.  Anyway, I have brought vegetables.

The new generation hardly has any idea that once jaggery-gram and gram-elaichi (cardamom) grain had the status of sweets in the mountain.  If any person came to the village from the city or on leave from job, then everyone in the neighborhood would have expected that jaggery-gram or gram-cardamom seeds would definitely be distributed.  Then most of the people of the village were in the army and they used to bring these sweets when the holiday came.  Those who used to do private jobs in cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Ludhiana etc., they also did not forget to distribute gram-cardamom when the holiday came, despite having less salary.  His thinking behind doing this was that in the eyes of the villagers, they should prove themselves as urban.
In the village, gram-cardamom was distributed only by people of relatively good economic condition, but in such families, where there were more members, the share of each member could not exceed eight-eight, ten-ten grains.  Whereas, on distributing jaggery and gram, at least jaggery would have come well in the share of all the members.  Bheli's jaggery was preferred over jaggery.  Bheli too khari (innocent) and two and a half kilos.  Although many people used to distribute the jaggery of Gindode, but the feeling of making a caller could not come in it.  Not only in others' eyes, but also in your own eyes.  Most of the people used to buy Bheli or Gindodon from Kotdwar itself.  Only two kilograms of gindode or a few bhel was bought from Dwarkhal market.

By the way, the most liked as a sweet was Andarkhi (refined jaggery).  She is also light brown.  It also revealed the status of the family concerned, as it cost more than the Bheli and Gindodon.  Whoever wanted more discussion in the village, he used to distribute it inside.  It was not considered necessary to distribute gram with the insider.  The status in the village remained high just by distributing the insides.  ...And yes!  The most important thing I was forgetting was that jaggery was called "sweet" back then.  That is, the meaning of sweets was jaggery.  The common people did not even know about the rest of the sweets then.
People used to take the name of barfi, but never had any luck to eat it.  Rather, many people had not even seen Barfi.  I didn't even live in the village.  I also saw Insidekhi after 1978 in Kotdwar.  The most expensive sweets of that era used to be laddus.  The one who distributed the laddoos was considered influential.  If a guest brings laddus to the wedding, then understand that there is no big man like him.  I too had heard this from the mouths of the people.  Then I was not even there, distributing laddoos to anyone.  Yes!  It was so sure that I had had the good fortune of eating laddus.

These things may seem imaginary today, but friends!  The world has progressed like this.  This is the sequence of human evolution.  But, it is also true that as we move forward, we leave peace, peace, contentment, humanity, harmony, love-love, affinity i.e. everything in that period.  Whereas, we need all these expressions the most today.  The saddest part is that in the race to look modern, we have forgotten our past.  We also forgot that the lessons of history show us the way forward.  History is the basis of science.

Golden moments of the village
-----------------------
Dinesh Kukreti
As promised, today I am introducing you to those special dishes of the hill, which were prepared and eaten collectively on leisure occasions.  Opportunities of leisure were available after dealing with the agricultural work in the village, when the weather was also pleasant.  All the materials (such as flour, rice, pulses, spices, ghee, etc.) for such events were also collected collectively.  Dhungle (thick loaves of wheat and Manduve flour or pure Manduve flour) and Ralo (mix) thick lentils made in Bhaddu (bronze-shaped, round and thick vessel made of bronze) were the main dishes.  Sometimes khatai (chutney) was also included in it.  This sourness was made by mixing bhat or sesame with lemon.

This event was held in an open wide field.  The special thing is that Dhungle was not made on the pan.  There was no need for a rolling pin to roll out the roti.  Women used to give the shape of a roti to the dough ball by hand and wrap it well with leaves.  It was then buried in hot ashes inside the stove.  After some time, when the hot roti was taken out from inside the ashes, the atmosphere was filled with its fragrance.  This roti was so thick that a normal person would fill his stomach with just one.  However, the hard working people of the village used to eat three to four rotis with pleasure.

Bhaddu may have gone out of fashion today, but in that era, pulses were made in Bhaddu only.  It was definitely an expensive pot, but even the poorest of the poor family used to keep a bhaddu in the house.  There is a Bhaddu in my house even today, which we had taken for Rs 116 years ago.  However, the pressure cooker has made it a showpiece for a long time.  So!  Before placing the bhaddu in the stove, a coating of mud or ash was applied to it.  Due to this it did not darken and it was easy to wash.  It takes a long time for the bhaddu to heat up, but it melts any dal in minutes to become hot.  Then such lentils are made that the eater keeps licking his fingers.

Preparations for making dhungle and dal started from day one.  Children also played a big part in this.  Arrangements like cleaning the farm where food was prepared, collecting wood for the stove were made by the children only.  The food was also first distributed to the children.  Usually the feast of the Dhungals was held at night only.  Whatever food was left, the villagers used to take it home.  Well, such a situation rarely came.  Twice a year, Dhungle used to be made.  As far as I can remember, I too have once been a part of the Dhungalo Ki Dawat in the village.

Apart from this, once in Kotdwar also we had a feast of Dhungals.  Maybe in the year 1983, then I used to study in class VIII.  However, then we ate the food in plates instead of pattals.  Apart from this, sometimes Jalebi feast was also held in the village.  Everyone who used to come to make jalebi was called Bairagi.  Whether it was his real name or a colloquial name, I don't know.  From which village he used to come, it is also not remembered now, but it was from a village near Bhalgaon.  He used to come to Bhalgaon once in four-five months with full preparation for making jalebi.

The process of making jalebi was held at Mudi Khwaal (the lower part of the village).  For this the entire village was informed.  How much jalebi was to be made, it depended on the demand of the people.  Some people used to eat one kilogram of jalebi alone.  Then probably Jalebi used to be one or two rupees a kilo.  Some people buy Jalebi in exchange for the goods.  If someone in the village felt that such a person did not have money, he would have bought it for him also.  Where do you find such a sense of love and affection today?  We have made progress economically, but have lagged behind socially.  If only!  The passing time could come back….

Pudding party

------------------

Dinesh Kukreti

There is no tension in office work these days.  Waking up on time, Eating on time and Sleeping on time.  It is natural that new ideas will come in the mind.  It is raining continuously in the morning and evening and it is worse than the humidity in the afternoon.  In such a situation, where does he even want to get out of the house?  It is eleven o'clock in the morning and it is raining outside.  There are sighs of sleep in my eyes sitting empty, but I do not like to sleep during the day.  So thought, why not write a diary today itself.  The biggest advantage of this will be that sleep will run away.

I usually write on mobile.  Well I have a laptop too, but writing on mobile seems more convenient.  Write anywhere while sitting, no hassle.  But, today I do not know what to write new.  So I am thinking why not take you back to my childhood days.  There are some such memories, which I consider relevant to share with you, because society needs such concerns today.  Let me also tell you that I remembered this childhood anecdote after seeing home-made semolina (haluva).

In those days, halwa used to be a typical dish and it was also made on special occasions.  Therefore, not only the children but also the elders used to wait impatiently for such occasions in the village.  Sometimes on specific occasions, the people of the village used to make pudding collectively and the material for this was also collected collectively.  But, the most special were those occasions, when there was a karij (work) in a house and everyone was doing it together.  For example, when someone had to apply cow dung (organic manure) in his fields (this was called Sahel), he would not do this work alone and invite the whole village for it.

Due to this, where the feeling of collectivism and love-love was developed, the work was also handled in a pinch.  Each family used to repeat this sequence in turn and the whole village became a participant in it.  After the completion of the work, all the working people used to gather in the courtyard (Chowk) of the family, whose fields were fertilized with cow dung.  There was already prepared pudding for them, which was called Prasad.  The fragrance of this pudding prepared by roasting semolina in desi ghee, used to bring water in the mouth.

Children were most eager to eat pudding.  For them, these occasions were like festivals.  That is why the people involved in Sahel used to take halwa for the children as well.  There was no need of utensils to eat the pudding and take it home.  The leaves of Malu and the leaves made from them used to compensate for the utensils.  Not only Sahel, there was a collective feast of pudding on the occasions of planting saplings in cere (planting paddy in irrigated fields), harvesting paddy-wheat and weeding.  Apart from this, everyone used to enjoy cutting tea (without sugar, which is sipped with a piece of jaggery).

How much joy, so much affinity, how much love and love was there in this feast, it can only be felt by the one who has lived this period.  Even though I was young then, these pleasant feelings are so deeply ingrained in my heart that it seems as if it was only yesterday.  The chain of memories has already started, so why not take you to another special feast of that era.  I bet you will enjoy this feast and say, I wish!  We too would have had a chance once to make such a feast….
