जीवन की राहें
('सत्यपथ' से परिचय)

दिनेश कुकरेतीमैंने लिखने की शुरुआत तो कर दी थी, लेकिन अभी लेखन में परिपक्वता आना शेष था। इसके लिए पढ़ाई जरूरी है, यह बात मेरी समझ में अच्छे से आ गई थी और इसके लिए मैंने पब्लिक लाइब्रेरी जाना भी शुरू कर दिया था। नगर पालिका की इस लाइब्रेरी में पढ़ने की दो तरह की व्यवस्था थी, पहली पूरी तरह निःशुल्क और दूसरी सालाना फीस वाली। पहली व्यवस्था के तहत लाइब्रेरी में बैठकर हिंदी-अंग्रेजी के सभी अखबार और तकरीबन सभी मासिक व पाक्षिक पत्रिकाएं पढ़ने की सुविधा थी। जबकि, दूसरी व्यवस्था के तहत आप अपनी मनपसंद पुस्तक तय अवधि के लिए घर ले जा सकते थे। अपने पास पैसे तो होते नहीं थे, इसलिए दूसरी व्यवस्था को चुनने का सवाल ही नहीं था। सो, अवकाश के दिन सुबह-शाम और शेष दिनों में शाम को लाइब्रेरी जाना मेरा रूटीन बन गया था।

नियमित अखबार पढ़ने से मेरी लिखने की उत्कंठा और बढ़ने लगी। हालांकि, लिखता मैं अभी भी आत्मसंतुष्टि के लिए ही था, लेकिन पढ़ने के ट्रेंड में मैंने अब थोड़ा बदलाव कर दिया। कॉमिक्स की जगह उपन्यासों ने ले ली। 12वीं के बाद तो यह शौक और बढ़ गया। संयोग से 12वीं के बाद मैंने कॉलेज में प्रवेश नहीं लिया, बल्कि बीकॉम प्रथम वर्ष की परीक्षा प्राइवेट दी। फिर भी इस वर्ष (1988-89) को मैं जीवन में बदलाव की दृष्टि से महत्वपूर्ण मानता हूं, क्योंकि इसी वर्ष मैंने छात्र राजनीति में प्रवेश कर अपने राजनीतिक जीवन की शुरुआत की। उस दौर में वामपंथी छात्र संगठन एसएफआई का बोलबाला हुआ करता था और कुछ साथियों के संपर्क में आने से मैं भी एसएफआई का सदस्य बन गया। इसी के साथ हुई छोटी-छोटी पुस्तकों से प्रगतिशील साहित्य पढ़ने की शुरुआत। उस दौर में सव्यसाची (प्रो. एसएल वशिष्ठ) की आठ-दस पुस्तिकाओं का सेट दस-पंद्रह रुपये में मिल जाता था।
ये आज भी मेरे जीवन की सर्वश्रेष्ठ पुस्तिकाएं हैं। समाज को वैज्ञानिक ढंग से समझने के लिए आज भी मूलरूप से हिंदी में इनसे बेहतर पुस्तिकाएं शायद ही उपलब्ध होंगी। अब पढ़ने का दायरा बढ़ना स्वाभाविक था। संयोग से इसी अवधि में मुझे भारतीय ज्ञान-विज्ञान समिति से जुड़ने का भी अवसर मिला। पौड़ी जिले में समिति के संचालन का जिम्मा बड़े भाई कॉमरेड विपिन उनियाल के पास था। उनके नेतृत्व में हमारी टीम ने पौड़ी व टिहरी जिले के एक बड़े इलाके में गांव-गांव जाकर नुक्कड़ नाटक व जनगीतों के माध्यम से लोगों को पढ़ने-लिखने के लिए प्रेरित किया। पहाड़ में हम नाटक गढ़वाली में ही करते थे। यहां तक कि संवाद भी सिचुएशन के हिसाब से तय होते थे।
इस दौरान जगह-जगह घूमने का एक फायदा यह हुआ कि मेरा मेल-जोल का दायरा बढ़ने लगा। अब मेरा उस दौर के प्रसिद्ध साप्ताहिक 'सत्यपथ' से भी परिचय हो चुका था। इस पत्र से तब कॉमरेड विपिन उनियाल, योगेंद्र उनियाल, अश्वनी कोटनाला जैसे साथी जुड़े थे और पत्र के संपादन का जिम्मा था शिक्षाविद पीतांबर दत्त डेवरानी के पास। उनके साथ काम करना अपने आप में एक गौरवपूर्ण अनुभूति है। डेवरानी जी उच्चकोटि के विद्वान होने के साथ शिक्षक भी थे, इसलिए हम सभी उन्हें गुरुजी कहते थे। उनसे मैं जितना भी सीख पाया, वह मेरे लिए किसी जमा-पूंजी से कम नहीं है। 'सत्यपथ' में मैंने लिखने का जो सलीका सीखा था, वह आज भी मेरे काम आ रहा है।
इसी वर्ष मुझे पहली बार एक रैली का हिस्सा बनकर लखनऊ जाने का मौका मिला। चार-पांच दिन के इस प्रवास के दौरान बहुत कुछ सीखा। कुछ पुस्तकें भी खरीदीं और विद्वजनों के लेक्चर सुनकर राष्ट्रीय राजनीति पर नज़रिया भी स्पष्ट हुआ। तब इस तरह के अनुभव पत्रकारिता में बहुत काम आते थे और सच कहूं तो मेरे आज भी आ रहे हैं। खैर! इस तरह के घटनाक्रमों के बाद मुझे लगने लगा था कि थोड़ा मेहनत करूंगा तो भविष्य में एक अच्छा पत्रकार साबित हो सकता हूं।

(Introduction to 'Satyapath')

I had started writing, but I was yet to mature in writing. I had understood well that studies are necessary for this and for this I had also started going to the public library. There were two types of reading arrangements in this Nagar Palika library, the first was completely free and the second was for annual fees. Under the first arrangement, there was a facility to sit in the library and read all the Hindi-English newspapers and almost all the monthly and fortnightly magazines. Whereas, under the second arrangement, you could take your favourite book home for a fixed period. I did not have money, so there was no question of choosing the second arrangement. So, going to the library in the morning and evening on holidays and in the evening on the remaining days had become my routine.
Reading the newspaper regularly increased my urge to write. Although, I still wrote for self-satisfaction, but now I changed the trend of reading a little. Novels replaced comics. This hobby increased further after 12th. Incidentally, after 12th I did not take admission in college, but instead gave the B.Com first year exam privately. Still, I consider this year (1988-89) as important from the point of view of change in life, because in this year I started my political career by entering student politics. In those days, the leftist student organization SFI was dominant and on coming in contact with some friends, I also became a member of SFI. With this, I started reading progressive literature from small books. In those days, a set of eight-ten booklets of Savyasachi (Prof. SL Vashisht) was available for ten-fifteen rupees.
These are the best books of my life even today. To understand society in a scientific way, there are hardly any better books available in Hindi. Now it was natural to increase the scope of reading. Coincidentally, during this period I also got the opportunity to join the Bharatiya Gyan-Vigyan Samiti. The responsibility of running the committee in Pauri district was with my elder brother Comrade Vipin Uniyal. Under his leadership, our team went from village to village in a large area of Pauri and Tehri district and inspired people to read and write through street plays and folk songs. In the hills, we used to do plays in Garhwali only. Even the dialogues were decided according to the situation.
During this time, one advantage of traveling from place to place was that my circle of interactions started increasing. Now I had also become acquainted with the famous weekly of that time 'Satyapath'. Friends like Comrade Vipin Uniyal, Yogendra Uniyal, Ashwani Kotanala were associated with this paper and the responsibility of editing the paper was with educationist Pitambar Dutt Devrani. Working with him is a proud feeling in itself. Devrani ji was a highly educated person and a teacher as well, so we all called him Guruji. Whatever I could learn from him is no less than a deposit for me. The writing style I learnt in 'Satyapath' is still useful to me.
This year I got the opportunity to go to Lucknow for the first time as a part of a rally. I learnt a lot during this four-five day stay. I also bought some books and my perspective on national politics also became clear by listening to the lectures of scholars. Such experiences were very useful in journalism then and to be honest, they are useful to me even today. Anyway! After such events, I started feeling that if I work a little hard, I can prove to be a good journalist in the future.
