लोक के शिल्पी एवं जाने-माने रंगकर्मी कैलाश भट्ट का इस तरह अल्पवय में चले जाना स्तब्ध कर देने वाली घटना है। वो बीमार जरूर थे, लेकिन ऐसे भी तो नहीं कि लोक से इस तरह मुंह मोड़ लिया। अभी 23 फरवरी की ही तो बात है, तब मैं कोटद्वार गया हुआ था। शाम चार बजे का समय रहा होगा। कैलाश भाई का फोन आया कि वह बीमार हैं और श्रीमहंत इंदिरेश हास्पिटल में चेकअप कराने आए हुए हैं। मैंने पूछा कि क्या दिक्कत है तो बोले, 'किडनी में स्टोन हैं और बहुत ज्यादा दिक्कत हो रही है। इस समय एमआरआई कराने लाइन में लगे हुए हैं। यदि आपकी कोई पहचान है तो फोन करा दीजिए।'
मैंने कहा, 'ठीक है' और तत्काल श्रीमहंत इंदिरेश हास्पिटल के पीआरओ मित्र भूपेंद्र रतूडी़ से उनकी मदद करने का आग्रह किया। साथ ही उन्हें कैलाश भाई व कैलाश भाई को उनके फोन नंबर वाट्सएप पर भेज दिए। फिर मैंने कैलाश भाई को फोन लगाया तो उनकी पत्नी ने फोन उठाया। लगभग पांच मिनट बाद रतूडी़जी का फोन आया कि बात हो गई है, अब उन्हें लाइन में लगने की जरूरत नहीं है। कुछ देर बाद मैंने यह पता करने के लिए कि एमआरआई हुआ या नहीं, कैलाश भाई को दोबारा फोन लगाया तो कोई जवाब नहीं मिला। न ही फिर उनका फोन आया। ...और अभी कुछ देर पहले ही गोपेश्वर से खबर पढी़ तो दिमाग सुन्न-सा हो गया।
कैलाश भाई से मेरा परिचय वर्ष 2014 में श्री नंदा देवी राजजात के दौरान हुआ था। हालांकि, उनके बारे में सुना हुआ मैंने पहले से था, लेकिन जाना राजजात में ही और इसकी वजह बनी पारंपरिक मिरजई। जिस मिरजई को हम वक्त के साथ भुला बैठे थे, उसे कैलाश भाई ने न सिर्फ नवजीवन दिया, बल्कि देश-दुनिया के आकर्षण का केंद्र भी बना दिया। उन्होंने मिरजई को वर्तमान के अनुरूप ढालकर न केवल इस पारंपरिक परिधान को संरक्षित करने का प्रयास किया, बल्कि नई पीढी़ में परंपराओं के प्रति रुचि भी जगाई। यही वजह है कि वर्ष 2014 के बाद आयोजित सभी वार्षिक लोकजातों में मिरजई यात्रियों की पहली पसंद रही।
पौडी़ जिले में एकेश्वर प्रखंड (चौंदकोट) के बिंजोली गांव निवासी कैलाश भट्ट बीते 24 साल से चमोली जिले के गोपेश्वर स्थित हल्दापानी में रहकर पारंपरिक परिधानों को नई पहचान देने का कार्य कर रहे थे। 52-वर्षीय कैलाश को यह कला विरासत में मिली थी, जिसने उन्होंने अपनी मेहनत से विशिष्ट पहचान दी। वह न केवल एक कुशल शिल्पी थे, बल्कि सामाजिक एवं सांस्कृतिक सरोकारों के प्रति भी उनकी गहरी समझ और आस्था थी। नाम के अनुरूप कैलाश को पहाड़ से अगाध लगाव था। पहाड़ में रहते हुए उन्होंने न केवल यहां की वेशभूषा एवं परिधानों को नया आयाम दिया, बल्कि वे प्रदेश के उन चुनिंदा शिल्पियों में भी शुमार थे, जिन्होंने बेहद कम समय में स्वयं को साबित कर दिखाया।
कैलाश भाई ने अपने हुनर से पारंपरिक मिरजई, झकोटा,आंगडी़, त्यूंखा, ऊनी दसलवार, सणकोट, अंगोछा, गमछा, दौंखा, पहाड़ी टोपी, लव्वा, अंगडी़ गातीऔर घुंघटी जैसे पारंपरिक परिधानों से वर्तमान पीढी़ से परिचित कराया। इसी की परिणति है कि आज नई पीढ़ी में पारंपरिक परिधानों के प्रति आकर्षण बढ़ता जा रहा है। इसके अलावा उन्होंने शादी-ब्याह के मौके पर मांगल गीत गाते वक्त पहनी जाने वाली मंगले़र ड्रेस, पांडव नृत्य की ड्रेस व बगड्वाल़ नृत्य की ड्रेस भी तैयार की। उनकी बनाई पहाडी़ टोपी का तो हर कोई दीवाना था। बल्कि यूं कहा जाए कि कैलाश भट्ट और पहाडी़ टोपी एक-दूसरे के पर्याय थे तो अतिश्योक्ति न होगी। विधानसभा व संसद से लेकर बालीवुड तक उनकी बनाई टोपी ने पहाड़ का मान बढा़या। देशभर में पहाडी़ बिरादरी के आयोजनों में इस टोपी की जबर्दस्त मांग रहती थी।
राजजात के बाद कैलाश भाई से फोन पर अक्सर बात होती रहती थी। दो साल पहले उन्होंने यहां देहरादून में घंटाघर के पास अपना शोरूम खोल लिया था, लेकिन कोरोना की वजह से फिर उसे बंद करना पडा़। मेरी जब भी उनसे बात होती, कहते थे, 'भाई साहब! मेरे प्राण तो पहाड़ में ही बसते हैं। देखते हैं, कब तक देहरादून में टिक पाता हूं।' मेरी मंशा थी कि कैलाश भाई और उनके हुनर पर विस्तार कुछ शोधपरक जानकारी दूं। अफसोस कि यह सपना पूरा नहीं हो पाया।
इसी जनवरी में एक दिन कैलाश भाई का फोन आया कि वह पटेल नगर में हैं और चाहते हैं कि लगे हाथ मुझसे मुलाकात भी हो जाए। दुर्भाग्य से यह भी संभव नहीं हो पाया, क्योंकि तब मैं आफिस पहुंचा ही नहीं था। काश! उस वक्त मैं आफिस में होता। कैलाश भाई मुझे अपनी बनाई पहाडी़ टोपी भेंट करना चाहते थे, लेकिन नियति को शायद यह भी मंजूर नहीं था। मेरी इच्छा थी कि इस दीपावली उत्तरांचल प्रेस क्लब के दीवाली उत्सव में पूरी कार्यकारिणी को कैलाश भाई की बनाई पहाडी़ टोपी भेंट की जाए। विडंबना देखिए कि उन्होंने मेरी इस भावना का भी मान नहीं रखा।

The passing away of Kailash Bhatt, a well-known artist and artist of the folk, at such a young age is a shocking incident. He was definitely ill, but not in such a way that he turned his back on the people like this. It was only on 23rd February, when I had gone to Kotdwar. It would have been four o'clock in the evening. Kailash Bhai got a call that he was ill and Shri Mahant Indiresh had come to the hospital for a checkup. I asked what was the problem, then said, 'There are stones in the kidney and there is a lot of problem. At present, they are in line to get MRI done. If you have any identity then give me a call.'
I said 'okay' and immediately requested PRO friend Bhupendra Raturi of Shrimahant Indiresh Hospital to help him. Also sent them to Kailash Bhai and Kailash Bhai on their phone numbers on WhatsApp. Then I called Kailash Bhai and his wife picked up the phone. After about five minutes, Ratudiji got a call saying that the conversation is over, now he does not need to stand in line. After sometime I called Kailash Bhai again to find out whether the MRI was done or not, but there was no response. Nor did his call come again. ... and just a while back, when I read the news from Gopeshwar, my mind became numb.
I was introduced to Kailash Bhai in the year 2014 during Shri Nanda Devi Rajjat. Although, I had already heard about them, but it was known only in the Rajjaat and the reason for this was the traditional Mirzai. The Mirzai which we had forgotten with time, Kailash Bhai not only gave him new life, but also made him the center of attraction of the country and the world. He not only tried to preserve this traditional dress by adapting Mirzai according to the present, but also instilled interest in traditions in the new generation. This is the reason why Mirzai has been the first choice of travelers in all the annual Lokjaats organized after the year 2014.
Kailash Bhatt, a resident of Binjoli village of Ekeshwar block (Chundkot) in Pauri district, had been working for the last 24 years to give a new identity to traditional clothes by living in Haldapani, Gopeshwar in Chamoli district. 52-year-old Kailash had inherited this art, which he distinguished by his hard work. He was not only a skilled craftsman but also had a deep understanding and faith in social and cultural concerns. As the name suggests, Kailash had great attachment to the mountain. While living in the mountain, he not only gave a new dimension to the costumes and costumes here, but he was also one of the few craftsmen of the state, who proved himself in a very short time.
Kailash Bhai introduced his skills to the present generation with traditional clothes like Mirzai, Jhakota, Angri, Tunkha, Woolen Dasalwar, Sankot, Angocha, Gamchha, Daunkha, Pahari Topi, Lavva, Angadi Gati and Ghungti. The result of this is that today the attraction towards traditional clothes is increasing in the new generation. Apart from this, he also prepared Mangaler dress, Pandava dance dress and Bagdwal dance dress to be worn while singing Mangal song on the occasion of marriage. Everyone was crazy about the hill cap made by him. Rather, it would not be an exaggeration to say that Kailash Bhatt and Pahari Topi were synonymous with each other. From the assembly and parliament to Bollywood, the cap made by him increased the value of the mountain. There was a great demand for this cap in the events of the hill fraternity across the country.
After the kingship, Kailash Bhai used to talk frequently on the phone. Two years ago, he had opened his showroom here in Dehradun near Ghantaghar, but due to Corona, it had to be closed again. Whenever I used to talk to him, he used to say, 'Brother! My life resides in the mountain itself. Let's see how long I can stay in Dehradun. My intention was to give some research information on Kailash Bhai and his skill in detail. It is a pity that this dream did not come true.
One day in this January, Kailash Bhai got a call that he was in Patel Nagar and wanted to meet with me. Unfortunately this was also not possible because I had not reached the office then. If only! I would have been in the office at that time. Kailash Bhai wanted to present me the mountain cap he had made, but fate probably did not approve of it either. It was my wish that this Diwali, during the Diwali festival of Uttaranchal Press Club, the entire executive body should be presented with a Pahari hat made by Kailash Bhai. See the irony that he did not even respect my sentiment.
