मठ-मंदिरों की भूमि उत्तराखंड में एक ऐसा प्राचीन मंदिर भी है, जिसके कपाट वर्ष 2019 तक सिर्फ एक दिन के लिए खोले जाते थे। यह मंदिर है चमोली जिले के जोशीमठ विकासखंड की उर्गम घाटी में स्थित वंशी नारायण मंदिर। पीढ़ियों से स्थापित परंपरा के अनुसार इस मंदिर के कपाट रक्षाबंधन पर्व पर खोले जाते रहे हैं और उसी दिन सूर्यास्त से पूर्व बंद भी कर दिए जाते थे। लेकिन, वर्ष 2020 में श्री वंशी नारायण मंदिर समिति ने नई परंपरा की शुरुआत करते हुए मंदिर के कपाट बदरीनाथ धाम के साथ खोलने और बंद करने का निर्णय लिया। तब से यही परंपरा स्थापित हो गई है। समुद्रतल से 13 हजार फीट की ऊंचाई पर कत्यूरी शैली में निर्मित इस मंदिर का निर्माण काल छठी से लेकर आठवीं सदी के बीच का माना जाता है। ऐसा भी कहा जाता है कि इस मंदिर का निर्माण पांडवकाल में हुआ। 

नारायण व शिव, दोनों के दर्शन

वंशी नारायण मंदिर तक पहुंचना कोई हंसी-खेल नहीं है। यहां जाने के लिए बदरीनाथ हाईवे पर हेलंग से उर्गम घाटी के देवग्राम गांव तक आठ किमी की दूरी वाहन से तय करने के बाद आगे 12 किमी का रास्ता पैदल नापना पड़ता है। पांच किमी दूर तक फैले मखमली घास के मैदानों को पार कर सामने नजर आता है दस फ़ीट ऊंचा प्राचीन वंशी नारायण मंदिर। भगवान नारायण को समर्पित एकल संरचना वाला यह मंदिर उर्गम गांव के आखिरी गांव बांसा से 10 किमी आगे है। इसलिए, मंदिर के आसपास कोई मानव बस्ती नहीं  हैं। मंदिर रोडोडेंड्रोन के जंगल और अल्पाइन घास के मैदानों से घिरा हुआ है। वंशीनारायण मंदिर में भगवान विष्णु की चतुर्भुज पाषाण मूर्ति विराजमान है। विशेष यह कि इस मूर्ति में भगवान नारायण व भगवान शिव, दोनों के ही दर्शन होते हैं। मंदिर में भगवान गणेश और वन देवियों की मूर्तियां भी मौजूद हैं। परंपरा के अनुसार कलगोठ गांव के जाख देवता के पुजारी ही वंशी नारायण मंदिर के पुजारी भी होते हैं। ये पुजारी ठाकुर जाति के होते हैं। 

पहले श्रावण पूर्णिमा पर था पूजा का विधान

वंशी नारायण मंदिर में पहले साल में सिर्फ रक्षाबंधन के दिन ही पूजा का विधान था। इसी दिन श्रद्धालु यहां दर्शन और पूजा-अर्चना कर सकते थे। बाकी पूरे वर्ष मंदिर के कपाट बंद रहते थे। अब भी रक्षाबंधन के दिन कुंआरी कन्या व विवाहिताएं भगवान वंशी नारायण की कलाई पर रक्षा सूत्र बांधने के बाद ही अपने भाइयों की कलाई पर स्नेह की डोर बांधती हैं। मंदिर के पास ही एक फुलवारी भी है, जिसे भगवान वंशी नारायण की फुलवारी कहते हैं। यहां कई दुर्लभ प्रजाति के फूल खिलते हैं, जिन्हें सिर्फ श्रावण पूर्णिमा यानी रक्षाबंधन पर्व पर तोड़ा जाता है। परंपरा के अनुसार इन्हीं फूलों से भगवान नारायण का विशेष शृंगार किया जाता है।

हर घर से आता है मक्खन

कपाट खुलने वाले दिन कलगोठ गांव का हर परिवार भगवान वंशी नारायण को भोग लगाने के लिए स्वयं का तैयार किया हुआ मक्खन लेकर मंदिर में पहुंचता है। इसी मक्खन से वहां पर प्रसाद तैयार होता है। इससे पहले मंदिर के पास मौजूद फुलवारी में खिले दुर्लभ प्रजाति के फूलों से भगवान नारायण का शृंगार होता है। साथ ही भगवान को सत्तू बाड़ी का भोग लगाया जाता है।

इसलिए था मनुष्य को सिर्फ एक दिन पूजा का अधिकार

वंशी नारायण मंदिर में मनुष्य को सिर्फ एक दिन पूजा का अधिकार दिए जाने की भी रोचक कहानी है। कहते हैं कि एक बार राजा बलि ने भगवान विष्णु से आग्रह किया कि वह उनके द्वारपाल बनें। भगवान विष्णु ने राजा बलि के इस आग्रह को स्वीकार कर लिया और राजा बलि के साथ पाताल लोक चले गए। भगवान विष्णु के कई दिनों तक दर्शन न होने कारण माता लक्ष्मी परेशान हो गईं और उन्हें ढूंढते हुए देवर्षि नारद के पास वंशी नारायण मंदिर पहुंचीं। माता ने उनसे भगवान नारायण का पता पूछा। तब नारद ने माता  को भगवान के पाताल लोक में द्वारपाल बनने का पूरा वृतांत सुनाया और उन्हें मुक्त कराने की युक्ति भी बताई। देवर्षि ने कहा कि  आप श्रावण मास की पूर्णिमा को पाताल लोक में जाएं और राजा बलि की कलाई पर रक्षा सूत्र बांधकर उनसे भगवान को मांग लें। लेकिन, पाताल लोक का मार्ग ज्ञात न होने पर माता लक्ष्मी ने नारद से भी साथ चलने को कहा। तब नारद श्रावण पूर्णिमा के दिन माता लक्ष्मी के साथ पाताल लोक गए और भगवान को मुक्त कराकर ले आए। मान्यता है कि सिर्फ यही दिन था, जब देवर्षि वंशीनारायण मंदिर में पूजा नहीं कर पाए। इस दिन उर्गम घाटी के कलकोठ गांव के जाख पुजारी ने भगवान वंशी नारायण की पूजा की। तब से यह परंपरा अनवरत चली आ रही है।

Vanshi Narayan of Urgam

There is an ancient temple in Uttarakhand, the land of monasteries and temples, whose doors were opened for just one day till the year 2019. This temple is the Vanshi Narayan temple located in the Urgam valley of Joshimath block of Chamoli district. According to the tradition established for generations, the doors of this temple have been opened on the festival of Rakshabandhan and were also closed before sunset on the same day. But, in the year 2020, Shri Vanshi Narayan Temple Committee started a new tradition and decided to open and close the doors of the temple along with Badrinath Dham. Since then this tradition has been established. Built in the Katyuri style at an altitude of 13 thousand feet above sea level, this temple is believed to be built between the sixth and eighth centuries. It is also said that this temple was built during the Pandava period.

Darshan of both Narayan and Shiva

Reaching the Vanshi Narayan temple is no joke. To reach here, one has to cover a distance of 8 km by vehicle from Helang to Devgram village of Urgam valley on the Badrinath highway and then walk for 12 km. After crossing the velvety grasslands spread over 5 km, the 10 feet high ancient Vanshi Narayan temple appears in front. This single structure temple dedicated to Lord Narayan is 10 km ahead of Bansa, the last village of Urgam village. Therefore, there is no human settlement around the temple. The temple is surrounded by rhododendron forest and alpine grasslands. The four-armed stone idol of Lord Vishnu is enshrined in the Vanshi Narayan temple. The special thing is that both Lord Narayan and Lord Shiva are visible in this idol. Idols of Lord Ganesha and forest goddesses are also present in the temple. According to tradition, the priest of Jakh Devta of Kalgoth village is also the priest of Vanshi Narayan temple. These priests belong to Thakur caste.

Earlier, worship was prescribed on Shravan Purnima

In the first year, worship was prescribed only on Rakshabandhan in the Vanshi Narayan temple. On this day, devotees could have darshan and worship here. The doors of the temple remained closed for the rest of the year. Even now, on the day of Rakshabandhan, unmarried girls and married women tie a thread of affection on the wrists of their brothers only after tying a Raksha Sutra on the wrist of Lord Vanshi Narayan. There is also a flower garden near the temple, which is called the flower garden of Lord Vanshi Narayan. Many rare species of flowers bloom here, which are plucked only on Shravan Purnima i.e. Rakshabandhan festival. According to tradition, Lord Narayan is specially decorated with these flowers.

Butter comes from every house

On the day the doors open, every family of Kalgoth village reaches the temple with butter prepared by themselves to offer to Lord Vanshi Narayan. Prasad is prepared there from this butter. Before this, Lord Narayan is decorated with rare species of flowers blooming in the flower garden near the temple.  Along with this, Sattu Bari is offered to God.

That is why man had the right to worship for only one day

There is an interesting story behind giving the right to worship for only one day in Vanshi Narayan temple. It is said that once King Bali requested Lord Vishnu to become his gatekeeper. Lord Vishnu accepted this request of King Bali and went to Patal Lok with King Bali. Mother Lakshmi got worried due to not getting darshan of Lord Vishnu for many days and while searching for him, she reached Vanshi Narayan temple to Devrishi Narad. Mother asked him the address of Lord Narayan. Then Narad told the mother the whole story of God becoming the gatekeeper in Patal Lok and also told the trick to free him. Devrishi said that you should go to Patal Lok on the full moon day of Shravan month and tie Raksha Sutra on the wrist of King Bali and ask for God from him. But, as the way to Patal Lok was not known, Mother Lakshmi also asked Narad to accompany her. Then Narad went to Patal Lok with Mother Lakshmi on the day of Shravan Purnima and freed God and brought him back.  It is believed that this was the only day when Devarshi Vanshinarayan could not worship in the temple. On this day, Jakh Pujari of Kalkoth village of Urgam Valley worshipped Lord Vanshinarayan. Since then, this tradition has been continuing uninterrupted.
