निरंतर अभ्यास से लिखने में काफी हद तक हाथ सध चुका था। भाषा की समझ भी धीरे-धीरे विकसित होने लगी थी। तब लैपटॉप, मोबाइल जैसे साधन नही थे। मेरी पहुंच तो डेस्कटॉप और लैंडलाइन फोन तक भी नहीं थी। इसलिए कोरे कागज पर हाथ से ही लिखना पड़ता था। मेरे साथ प्लस पॉइंट यह था कि एक तो राइटिंग बहुत अच्छी थी और दूसरा मैं बिना लाइन के पेपर में कोई गलती किए बिना बिल्कुल सीधे लिखता था। इसलिए अखबारों के दफ़्तर में मेरी लिखी विज्ञप्ति को खासा पसंद किया जाता था। साथ ही मैं वॉल राइटिंग भी बहुत अच्छी करता था। सो, किसी भी तरह की राजनीतिक गतिविधि होने पर साथी लोग वॉल राइटिंग का जिम्मा मुझे ही सौंपते थे। इससे मेरी राइटिंग कलात्मक भी हो गई थी। मुझे याद है, एक बार उत्तर प्रदेश विधानसभा चुनाव के दौरान मैंने जिला बिजनौर में नजीबाबाद से कोतवाली तक वॉल राइटिंग की है।

उस दौर में अखबारों के डाक संस्करणों में दोपहर दो बजे के बाद के समाचार नहीं छप पाते थे। कारण, तब समाचार डाक से जाते थे यांनी प्रेस से जो गाड़ी सुबह अखबार लेकर आती थी, वो दोपहर दो बजे बाद अखबार के दफ्तर से समाचार, विज्ञापन आदि लेकर यूनिट मुख्यालय (जहां अखबार छपता था) के लिए रवाना हो जाती थी। तब क्षेत्रीय अखबार (अमर उजाला व दैनिक जागरण) मेरठ से छपा करते थे। अमर उजाला के दफ्तर मेरा लगातार जाना होता था, इसलिए वहां सभी से घनिष्ठता हो गई थी। सभी लोग समान विचारों वाले थे, इसलिए बीच-बीच में मैं यूं ही बैठने वहां चला जाया करता था। अमर उजाला के प्रभारी तब मिश्र जी (अनूप मिश्र) हुआ करते थे। मेरी राइटिंग अच्छी होने के कारण वो अक्सर खबर लिखने के लिए भी कह देते थे यानी मेरी राइटिंग में ही खबर मेरठ जाती थी।

इससे जल्द ही खबरों पर मेरी अच्छी-खासी पकड़ हो गई। आज मैं मीडिया में आए नए लड़कों (कुछ अपवाद को छोड़कर) को देखता हूं तो उन पर अफसोस होता है। उन्हें न तो खबर की समझ होती है, न व्याकरण की ही। शब्दों के मामले में भी वे बेहद गरीब होते हैं। लेकिन, इस मामले में मैं बिल्कुल अलग था। आलेख, व्यंग्य आदि लिखना तो मैं पहले ही सीख चुका था, उस पर मिश्र जी की संगत ने खबरें लिखनी भी सिखा दीं। कई बार मैं एक खबर लिखने को कई-कई कागज खराब कर देता था, लेकिन त्रुटियुक्त खबरें मुझे कतई पसंद नहीं थीं। इसके साथ ही मैं जहां मौका मिला, लिखने लगा। जहां से पैसे मिलते थे और जहां फ्री सेवा होती थी, वहां भी। दरअसल, मेरे पास तब खोने के लिए कुछ भी नहीं था। मुझे तो जो भी करना था, अर्जित ही करना था। 

वैसे प्राथमिकता में अमर उजाला में लिखने को ही देता था, क्योंकि वहां से पैसे मिल जाते थे और वो भी समय पर। तब इस अखबार की एक खूबी ये भी थी कि यह प्रतिभाओं को प्रोत्साहित करता था। मेरे लेख तो इस पत्र ने उस दौर में संपादकीय पृष्ठ पर तक छापे हैं। इसके साथ ही मैं यह भी जोड़ूंगा कि वह लेख स्तरीय होते थे। फिर भी शुरुआती दौर में ही इस तरह प्रोत्साहन मिलना उपलब्धि तो मानी ही जाएगी। इसके अलावा नैनीताल समाचार, बिजनौर टाइम्स, चिंगारी, सीमांचल टाइम्स, दैनिक जागरण, दैनिक हिंदुस्तान, पंजाब केसरी, उत्तर उजाला, राष्ट्रीय सहारा, प्रतियोगिता दर्पण, प्रतियोगिता विकास, योजना (जम्मू-कश्मीर), सरिता, मुक्ता, कादंबिनी, मनोरमा आदि तमाम पत्र-पत्रिकाओं में मैं नियमित रूप से लेख भेजने लगा। संभवतः लेखन परिपक्व ही रहा होगा, जो भेजी गई सामग्री सभी में छप भी जाती थी। इनमें से सरिता, मुक्ता, कादंबिनी और मनोरमा साहित्यिक पत्रिकाएं थी, इसलिए इनमें मैं कविता और कहानी ही भेजता था। कहने का मतलब तब मैं ठीक-ठीक कविता-कहानी भी लिखने लगा था।

समाचार पत्रों में दैनिक जागरण और पंजाब केसरी के अलावा बाकी सभी बड़े अखबार पारिश्रमिक दिया करते थे। पत्रिकाएं तो सभी पारिश्रमिक देने वाली ही थी। इस लेखन की बदौलत ही मुझे पहली बार बैंक में खाता खोलने का सौभाग्य मिला। पहली बार मैंने आकाशवाणी से मिला चेक बैंक में जमा किया था। अच्छा लगता था, जब बैंक में दो-चार सौ रुपये जमा हो जाते थे। खैर! अब मैं अपनी तरफ से तो परफैक्ट पत्रकार बन चुका था, लेकिन था एक फ्रीलांस पत्रकार ही। हालांकि, जिस तरह अमर उजाला की और मेरा झुकाव बढ़ता जा रहा था, उससे लगभग तय लग रहा था कि आने वाले समय में इसी पत्र से जुड़ना है और संयोग से यही बात सच भी साबित हुई। लेकिन, फिलहाल तो स्वतंत्र लेखन में ही मजा आ रहा था।

With constant practice, I had become quite adept at writing. My understanding of language was also gradually developing. At that time, there were no means like laptops and mobiles. I did not even have access to desktops and landline phones. Therefore, I had to write by hand on blank paper. My plus point was that firstly, my writing was very good and secondly, I used to write straight without making any mistakes on the paper without any lines. Therefore, my press releases were liked a lot in the newspaper offices. Along with this, I was also very good at wall writing. So, whenever there was any kind of political activity, my colleagues would assign me the responsibility of wall writing. This also made my writing artistic. I remember, once during the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, I did wall writing from Najibabad to Kotwali in district Bijnor.

In those days, the postal editions of newspapers could not print news after 2 pm.  The reason was that the news was sent by post, that is, the vehicle which brought the newspaper from the press in the morning, used to leave for the unit headquarters (where the newspaper was printed) after 2 pm with news, advertisements etc. from the newspaper office. At that time, regional newspapers (Amar Ujala and Dainik Jagran) used to be printed from Meerut. I used to visit Amar Ujala's office regularly, so I became close to everyone there. Everyone had similar views, so I used to go there to sit occasionally. Mishra ji (Anoop Mishra) used to be the in-charge of Amar Ujala then. Since my writing was good, he would often ask me to write the news, that is, the news used to go to Meerut in my writing only.

Due to this, I soon got a good grip on news. Today, when I see the new boys in the media (barring a few exceptions), I feel sorry for them. They neither understand news nor grammar. They are also very poor in terms of words. But, I was completely different in this matter. I had already learnt to write articles, satires etc., and on top of that, Mishra ji's company taught me to write news as well. Many times, I would spoil many papers to write a news, but I did not like news with errors at all. Along with this, I started writing wherever I got a chance. Wherever I got money and wherever there was free service. Actually, I had nothing to lose then. Whatever I had to do, I had to earn it. 

By the way, I used to give priority to writing in Amar Ujala, because I got money from there and that too on time. Then one of the specialties of this newspaper was that it encouraged talents. This newspaper even published my articles on the editorial page in that period.  Along with this, I will also add that those articles were of high standard. Still, getting such encouragement in the initial stage will be considered an achievement. Apart from this, I started sending articles regularly to various magazines like Nainital Samachar, Bijnor Times, Chingari, Seemanchal Times, Dainik Jagran, Dainik Hindustan, Punjab Kesari, Uttar Ujala, Rashtriya Sahara, Competition Darpan, Competition Vikas, Yojana (Jammu-Kashmir), Sarita, Mukta, Kadambini, Manorama etc. Probably my writing was mature, that the material sent was published in all of them. Out of these, Sarita, Mukta, Kadambini and Manorama were literary magazines, so I used to send only poems and stories in them. I mean to say that I had started writing poems and stories properly then.

Apart from Dainik Jagran and Punjab Kesari, all other major newspapers used to pay remuneration. All the magazines also paid remuneration. It was because of this writing that I got the opportunity to open a bank account for the first time. For the first time, I deposited the cheque received from Akashvani in the bank. It felt good when two to four hundred rupees would be deposited in the bank. Anyway! Now, I had become a perfect journalist from my point of view, but I was still a freelance journalist. However, the way my inclination towards Amar Ujala was increasing, it seemed almost certain that I would be associated with this paper in the future and coincidentally this proved to be true. But, for the time being, I was enjoying freelance writing.
