कच्चे नारियल (भाग-1)

1986 की बरसात बीत चुकी थी और रामलीलाओं का दौर शुरू होने वाला था। रामलीला को लेकर हम बेहद उत्साहित रहा करते थे। कोशिश होती थी रोज लीला का मंचन देखा जाए। इसकी एक वजह यह भी थी कि टीवी तक गिनती के घरों में ही हुआ करते थे, वह भी ब्लैक एंड व्हाइट। हालांकि, तब हमारी उम्र दो साल बढ़ गई थी, लेकिन खुरापातों का सिलसिला फिर भी जारी था। इसके लिए नई-नई तरकीब निकाली जाती थीं। सभी दोस्तों के सुझाव सुने जाते और जो खुरापात सबसे बेहतर लगती, उस पर अमल शुरू हो जाता। इस बार योजना यह बनी कि मोहल्ले में ही स्थित नारियल के पेड़ से कच्चे नारियल तोड़कर खाए जाएं। अब तक हममें से किसी ने भी कभी कच्चे नारियल नहीं खाये थे।

दरअसल, हमारे मोहल्ले की शुरुआत में सड़क से लगभग दस मीटर अंदर पैदल मार्ग से लगे बागीचे में यह नारियल का पेड़ था (अब भी है)। उस साल इस पर पहली बार नारियल लगे थे। पेड़ काफी ऊंचा था, इसलिए नारियल  चोरी होने का कोई डर भी नहीं था, हमें तो इसी चुनौती से पार पाना था। अक्टूबर शुरू होते ही रामलीलाएं भी शुरू हो चुकी थीं और हमें इसी अवधि में अभियान शुरू करना था। नारियल काटने के लिए चाकू और नारियल पानी पीने के लिए गिलास हमने पहले ही सुरक्षित रख लिए थे। अभियान में हम सिर्फ चार लोग शामिल थे। इस दौरान किस तरह की चुनौतियां सामने आ सकती हैं, इसके लिए शुरुआती दो दिन हम स्थिति का जायजा लेते रहे।

अब हम अभियान को अंजाम देने के लिए मानसिक रूप से तैयार हो चुके थे। असल में नारियल बहुत ऊंचाई पर थे और पेड़ पर चढ़कर ही उन्हें तोडा़ जा सकता था। खैर! अगले दिन हम निकल पडे़ अभियान पर। लगभग रात बारह बजे तक हमने रामलीला का आनंद लिया और फिर पहुंच गए बागीचे में अपनी कर्मस्थली पर। आसपास का अच्छी तरह मुआयना करने के बाद तय हुआ कि हममें से एक ऐसा बंदा पेड़ पर चढे़गा, जिसे इसकी आदत है। इसके लिए हम सबमें सबसे बडे़ साथी ने यह जिम्मेदारी ली।

हालांकि, नारियल के पेड़ पर चढ़ना आसान काम नहीं है। इंसके लिए व्यक्ति का प्रशिक्षित होना बेहद जरूरी है। बहरहाल! हमारे बंदे ने पेड़ पर चढ़ना शुरू किया और आखिरकार शिखर पर पहुंच ही गया। वह चाकू भी अपने साथ लेकर पेड़ पर चढा़ था। लेकिन, पांच नारियल काटने में उसे लगभग आधा घंटा लग गया। इसके बाद पेड़ से नीचे उतरना भी किसी चुनौती से कम नहीं था, जिससे आखिरकार हमने  पार पा ही लिया। अब सवाल यह था कि तोडे़ गए नारियल छीले कहां जाएं। इसके लिए हमें सबसे बेहतर स्थान खोह नदी का तप्पड़ (टापू) लगा, जहां किसी की नजर नहीं पड़नी थी। सो, चल पडे़ हम उस टापू की ओर।

टापू बागीचे से ज्यादा दूर नहीं है। बामुश्किल एक किमी का फासला होगा बागीचा और टापू के बीच। सितंबर-अक्टूबर में वहां पहुंचने के लिए खोह नदी को पार करना पड़ता है। हालांकि, तब नदी में पानी बहुत ज्यादा मात्रा में नहीं रहता, फिर भी सावधानी बरतना बेहद जरूरी है। संयोग से तब नदी का रुख टापू के दूसरी ओर यानी पूर्वी छोर में था, इसलिए हम आसानी से टापू पर पहुंच गए। फिर शुरू हुआ नारियल छीलने का काम। ले-देकर हमारे पास एकमात्र चाकू था, इसलिए बडी़ मुश्किल से नारियल छीले जा सके। पहली बार कच्चे नारियल खाने को मिल रहे थे, इसलिए आनंद की अनुभूति तो होनी ही थी।

Raw coconut (Part-1)

The rain of 1986 had passed and the era of Ramlilas was about to begin.  We used to be very excited about Ramlila.  Efforts were made to see the stage of Leela every day.  One of the reasons for this was that even TVs used to be in counting houses, that too black and white.  Although, then our age had increased by two years, but the process of dosages was still going on.  For this, new methods were invented.  The suggestions of all the friends were listened to and the dosage which seemed best, would be implemented.  This time the plan was that raw coconuts should be eaten by breaking them from the coconut tree located in the locality itself.  Till now none of us had ever eaten raw coconut.

In fact, at the beginning of our locality, about ten meters from the road, this coconut tree was (still is) in the garden adjacent to the walkway.  Coconuts were planted on it for the first time that year.  The tree was very tall, so there was no fear of the coconut being stolen, we had to overcome this challenge.  By the beginning of October, the Ramlilas had also started and we had to start the campaign in this period.  We had already kept a knife for cutting coconut and glasses for drinking coconut water.  Only four of us were involved in the campaign.  For the first two days, we kept taking stock of the situation for what kind of challenges might come up during this period.  

Now we were mentally prepared to carry out the campaign.  Actually the coconuts were very high and could be broken only by climbing the tree.  So!  The next day we set out on the expedition.  We enjoyed Ramlila till about twelve o'clock in the night and then reached our work place in the garden.  After thoroughly inspecting the surroundings, it was decided that one of us would climb the tree, who is used to it.  For this the greatest friend of all of us took this responsibility.

However, climbing a coconut tree is not an easy task.  It is very important for the person to be trained for this.  However!  Our fellow started climbing the tree and finally reached the summit.  He had also climbed the tree with the knife with him.  But, it took him about half an hour to cut five coconuts.  After this, even getting down from the tree was no less than a challenge, due to which we finally overcome.  Now the question was, where to go to peel the broken coconut.  For this, we found the best place to be the tappad (island) of Khoh river, where no one was to be seen.  So, let's go towards that island.

The island is not far from the garden.  There will be hardly a distance of one kilometer between the garden and the island.  One has to cross Khoh river to reach there in September-October.  Although, then the water in the river is not very much, still it is very important to take precautions.  Incidentally, then the river was on the other side of the island i.e. in the eastern end, so we reached the island easily.  Then the work of peeling the coconut started.  By the way, the only knife we ​​had was to peel the coconut with great difficulty.  For the first time, raw coconut was being eaten, so there was bound to be a feeling of happiness.
