यह मेरे जीवन का महत्वपूर्ण दौर था। किसी दिन मुझे कुछ नया पढ़ने को नहीं मिलता तो मन उदास हो जाता था। नई पुस्तक हाथ लगने पर मैं भोजन करना तक भूल जाता था। यहां तक कि मां की गलियों का भी मुझ पर कोई असर नहीं होता था। सृंजय का उपन्यास 'कामरेड का कोट', यशपाल का 'दादा कामरेड', अवतार सिंह संधु 'पाश' का कविता संग्रह 'बीच का रास्ता नहीं होता', फिदेल कास्त्रो की पुस्तक 'चे ग्वेरा की याद में', अलेक्जेंडर (अलेक्सांद्र) पुश्किन का उपन्यास 'बदला', 'काव्य कानन' और 'इवान बेल्किन की कहानियां', जान रीड की पुस्तक 'दस दिन जब दुनिया हिल उठी', फ्रेडरिक एंगेल्स की 'वानर से नर बनने में श्रम की भूमिका' व 'परिवार, निजी संपत्ति और राज्य की उत्पत्ति', कार्ल मार्क्स व फ्रेडरिक एंगेल्स का 'कम्युनिस्ट घोषणा पत्र' जैसी अनूठी पुस्तकें मैंने उसी दौर में पढी़ं।

मैंने भी गाए गीत

शहीद-ए-आजम सरदार भगत सिंह, राही मासूम रजा, शाहिर लुधियानवी, फै़ज़ अहमद फै़ज़, दुष्यंत कुमार, अदम गोंडवी (रामनाथ सिंह), शलभ श्रीराम सिंह, मुक्तिबोध, बाबा नागार्जुन (वैद्यनाथ मिश्र), जौन एलिया, जावेद अख्तर, सफदर हाशमी, गांधीजी, नेहरूजी, बल्ली सिंह चीमा, दूधनाथ सिंह, गोरख पांडेय, मंगलेश डबराल जैसे लेखक, कवि, शायर, उपन्यासकार एवं समालोचक भी मुझे हमेशा ही प्रिय रहे हैं। इन्हीं तमाम क्रांतिकार रचनाकारों को पढ़कर मैंने भविष्य के लिए लिखने-पढ़ने की राह चुनी। दुष्यंत कुमार, बल्ली सिंह चीमा, अदम गोंडवी, शलभ श्रीराम सिंह, बल्ली सिंह चीमा आदि की रचनाओं (कविता, गीत व गज़ल ) को तो मैं साथियों के साथ विभिन्न मौकों पर बडे़ उत्साह एवं उल्लास के साथ गाया करता था।
साक्षरता की अलख

ये सारे जनवादी कवि एवं गीतकार मेरे संघर्ष के साथी रहे हैं। आज भी जब कभी मन में निराशा का भाव प्रवेश करने की कोशिश करता है तो इन साथियों को मैं अपने साथ खडा़ पाता हूं। वर्ष 1990 में मुझे 'भारतीय ज्ञान-विज्ञान समिति' के साथ काम करने का मौका मिला। तब हमारी टीम ने लगभग आधा पौडी़ जिले और चमोली व टिहरी जिले के कुछ हिस्सों में नुक्कड़ नाटक व जनगीतों के माध्यम से साक्षरता की अलख जगाने का प्रयास किया। यह अभियान लगभग 40 दिन चला था। टीम में हम लगभग 14 सदस्य थे। इनमें साथी विपिन उनियाल, चंद्रशेखर बेंजवाल, योगेंद्र उनियाल, अवनीश नेगी, मुकेश नैथानी, अंजु ध्यानी व ओंमप्रकाश कवटियाल के अलावा बाकी नाम मुझे याद नहीं रहे।

हिंदी-गढ़वाली में करते थे नाटक

साथी चंद्रशेखर बेंजवाल व अंजु ध्यानी ने इसके लिए बाकायदा ट्रेनिंग ली थी। इसके बाद सात या दस दिन तक उन्होंने कोटद्वार के श्री गुरु राम राय स्कूल में हम बाकी साथियों को ट्रेंड किया। हम हिंदी व गढ़वाली में नाटकों की प्रस्तुति देते थे। साथी सफदर हाशमी के लिखे साक्षरता गीत 'पढ़ना-लिखना सीखो वो मेहनत करने वालों, पढ़ना लिखना सीखो वो भूख से मरने वालों' और 'क, ख, ग सीखोगे अगर, कठिन न होगी कोई डगर', 'किताबें करती हैं बातें, बीते जमाने की' को विशेष रूप से गाया करते थे। इसमें कितना आनंद आता था, शब्दों में व्यक्त कर पाना संभव नहीं है। गांव-गांव जाकर नाट्य प्रस्तुति देना, वहां की संस्कृति, परंपरा एवं खान-पान से परिचित होना मेरे जीवन की दिव्य अनुभूतियां हैं।

मेरी कुल जमा पूंजी

मेरी खुशनसीबी है कि मुझे मशहूर कवि एवं साहित्यकार बाबा नागार्जुन से कविताएं और जनकवि अदम गोंडवी से गज़लें सुनने का मौका, तो मशहूर नाट्यकर्मी सफदर हाशमी के साथ बैठने का भी। मशहूर चरित्र अभिनेत्री सीमा बिस्वास के साथ हमारी टीम इलाहाबाद में नुक्कड़ नाटक किया करती थी। कविता लिखने का हुनर भी मुझमें इन्हीं तमाम विभूतियों को सुन-सुनकर आया। सच कहूं तो यही सब मेरी जमा पूंजी है, जिसमें महंगाई के इस दौर में भी कमी नहीं आई है। इन दिनों मैं मैक्सिक गोर्की की 'लेव तोलस्तोय' और स्टीफेन हाकिंग की 'समय का संक्षिप्त इतिहास' पढ़ रहा हूं।

Each novel of Maxim Gorky is unique in itself. I have read a lot of his stories too. All inspire struggle. This is the reason why I keep looking for his books even today. Along with this, the great American novelist and writer Howard Fast's books 'Adi Vidrohi', 'Muktimarg' etc. have also been my favorite novels. By reading these, I got a chance to know and understand world history. Ernesto Che Guevara, the Marxist revolutionary of Argentina, who played an important role in the Cuban revolution, is my role model. Reading his struggles, it seems as if he is being interviewed. The novels 'War and Peace' and 'Resurrection' by Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (Leo Tolstoy), one of the most respected writers of the nineteenth century, are also wonderful.
This was an important period in my life. If I don't get to read something new someday, my mind used to get sad. I even forgot to eat when I got a new book. Even the streets of my mother had no effect on me. Srinjay's novel 'Comrade Ka Kot', Yashpal's 'Dada Comrade', Avtar Singh Sandhu's Pash's collection of poems 'Beech Ka Rasta Nahi Hota', Fidel Castro's book 'In memory of Che Guevara', Alexander (Alexandra) Pushkin The novels of 'Revenge', 'Poetry Kanan' and 'The Stories of Ivan Belkin', John Reed's 'Ten Days When the World Was Shaken', Friedrich Engels' 'The Role of Labor in From Apes to Males' and 'Family, Private Property' I read unique books like 'The Origin of the State', 'Communist Manifesto' by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels during that period.

Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh, Rahi Masoom Raza, Shahir Ludhianvi, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Dushyant Kumar, Adam Gondvi (Ramnath Singh), Shalabh Shriram Singh, Muktibodh, Baba Nagarjuna (Vaidyanath Mishra), Jaun Elia, Javed Akhtar, Safdar Writers, poets, poets, novelists and critics like Hashmi, Gandhiji, Nehruji, Bally Singh Cheema, Dudhnath Singh, Gorakh Pandey, Mangalesh Dabral have always been dear to me. After reading all these revolutionary writers, I chose the path of writing and reading for the future. I used to sing the compositions (poems, songs and ghazals) of Dushyant Kumar, Bally Singh Cheema, Adam Gondvi, Shalabh Shriram Singh, Bally Singh Cheema etc. with great enthusiasm and gaiety on various occasions with my companions.
Light of literacy

All these democratic poets and lyricists have been the companions of my struggle. Even today, whenever the feeling of despair tries to enter my mind, I find these companions standing with me. In the year 1990, I got an opportunity to work with 'Indian Society of Gyan-Vigyan'. Then our team tried to create awareness of literacy through street plays and folk songs in some parts of Pauri district and Chamoli and Tehri districts. This campaign lasted for about 40 days. We were about 14 members in the team. Among them I can not remember the other names apart from fellow Vipin Uniyal, Chandrashekhar Benzwal, Yogendra Uniyal, Avnish Negi, Mukesh Naithani, Anju Dhyani and Omprakash Kavatiyal.

Companions Chandrashekhar Benzwal and Anju Dhyani had taken proper training for this. After this, for seven or ten days, he trained the rest of us at Shri Guru Ram Rai School in Kotdwar. We used to perform plays in Hindi and Garhwali. Literacy songs written by fellow Safdar Hashmi 'Those who work hard, learn to read and write, those who die of hunger' and 'A, B, C, if you will learn, no path will be difficult', 'Books do talk, the past' Specially used to sing 'Zaam Ki'. It is not possible to express in words how much joy it was. Going from village to village, giving theatrical performances, getting acquainted with the culture, tradition and food there is a divine experience of my life.
My net worth

I am fortunate to have the opportunity to listen to poems by famous poet and litterateur, Baba Nagarjuna and ghazals from Janakavi Adam Gondvi, and also to sit with renowned dramatist Safdar Hashmi. Our team used to do street plays in Allahabad with famous character actress Seema Biswas. The skill of writing poetry also came in me after listening to all these personalities. To be honest, this is all my accumulated capital, which has not decreased even in this period of inflation. These days I am reading 'Lev Tolstoy' by Max Gorky and 'A Brief History of Time' by Stephen Hawking.
