Give Your Mother Tongue Its Rightful and Proud Place
If you want our mother tongues—Garhwali, Kumaoni, and Jaunsari—to be included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, do not let this opportunity slip away. I am fully confident that by registering your mother tongue against the 14th question in the census form, you will make an invaluable contribution toward keeping our culture, identity, and linguistic heritage intact.

The census work has been completed in the remote and snow-covered regions of Uttarakhand, and preparations are now underway for the rest of the state in November. Since assembly elections are scheduled to take place in Uttarakhand next year, the census operations are being conducted here ahead of schedule. Under this plan, self-enumeration will take place from November 16 to November 30, followed by the main enumeration from December 1, 2026, to January 4, 2027. Following this, data correction work will be carried out from January 5 to January 9. During the main enumeration, census workers will go door-to-door to collect data. During this period, every individual in a family will be asked 40 questions, which they must answer accurately.
Among these, the 14th question pertains to the mother tongue. This means you must record your mother tongue in this column of the census form. If you want our mother tongues—Garhwali, Kumaoni, and Jaunsari—to be included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, do not let this opportunity slip away. I am fully confident that by registering your mother tongue in the census form, you will make an invaluable contribution toward keeping our culture, identity, and linguistic heritage intact.
Friends! A census is not merely an exercise in counting heads. It is a historic opportunity to document our existence, our culture, and our roots. This is because the higher the number of speakers of a language in official records, the stronger the policies created for the preservation of that language will be. Do not forget that our mother tongue is our true identity. If we miss the mark today, future generations might be deprived of their own language. Remember, people often unknowingly or for other reasons write down the name of another major language instead of their local language or mother tongue. This reduces the statistical data of our native language, causing it to shrink merely to paper.
Therefore, when the census worker asks for your mother tongue, register the name of your native language without any hesitation. Ensure that the language you speak is exactly what is written in the form. Create awareness about this among your family, neighbors, and relatives as well. Language is not just a medium of conversation; it is the soul of our culture. Keeping our soul alive is our collective responsibility. Come! Let us ensure our participation in this national duty and give our mother tongue its rightful and proud place.
