---------------------

Anecdote (4)

Naughty childhood

-----------------------

Dinesh Kukreti

What are the days of adolescence, especially when it is full of mischief.  When I remember such days, I feel strange tickling.  Sometimes I want to laugh out loud.  This is about the same period, when I could not sleep without listening to the story from Nani.  No matter how, there was some misery in the mind that used to go on.  One night suddenly it came to mind that why should not the people of the locality be harassed.  But, I could not understand how to do it.  Actually, I did not want to implement any light-hearted idea, because of the fear of getting caught.  It was not known when sleep took me in its lap in this chaos.

So!  The next day the idea of troubling the local people was also realized.  The idea was to throw stones at selected two houses in the neighborhood after 12 o'clock.  But, no one other than himself should even be aware of it.  Of the two houses marked with stone throwing, one half had a sheet of iron roof.  It was also decided that the stones would be very small, smaller than a kancha (glass bullet).  That is, there will be a sound if their sheet falls in the roof, but there will be no harm.  Just create an atmosphere of fear!  And... yes, the terrace on which the stones were to be thrown was so close to my house that it was very easy to reach there even by lying down.

Now the concern was about where to keep the stones? After a while, the crazy mind figured out a foolproof solution for this too.  Actually, in those days I used to wear pajama with nada and 10-12 small stones could be easily kept in place of nada.  There was no question of anyone having any doubts.  So, the first thing I did was to collect small stones as soon as evening fell on that day.  After having dinner, preparations were on to sleep.  That day I made a slight change in the night routine that I did not insist on telling the story to the grandmother.  Who was going to be the character of the story himself.  Since the campaign was to start from midnight, there was no sleep in his eyes.

According to the plan, I did not insist on telling the story to Nani, so soon Nani fell asleep.  As soon as twelve o'clock in the night, I took out a stone from the place of Nada and aimed it at the roof of the neighbor's sheet.  The loud sound of tons resonated, but the people of that house did not give special attention to it as a coincidence.  I remained silent for a while and then threw another stone aiming at me.  This time not only their heads but also the people around them bowed their heads and came out of the houses.  Meanwhile, after throwing the third stone, there was an uproar.

Our landlord and neighbors had also woken up.  The landlord was in our relationship.  One of his sons used to be my balsakha, but I didn't even tell him this plan.  His grandmother was a very dangerous woman.  The abuses kept rising on his tongue in the form of blessings.  He was memorized by every abuse of elders prevalent in the world.  So, how could she remain silent in such a situation?  Now I too felt that the effort was starting to pay off.  But, after that I didn't throw any stone.  The campaign was a long one, so that was enough for that night.

My family members were also scared by this incident, so they started saying that I should not sleep outside.  That's how I celebrated them.  In fact, the stone thrower had no idea, so there was a fear in everyone's mind that there was no ghost or ghost.  I was glad to see them frightened, but it was also necessary to obey them.  Otherwise the needle of doubt could have turned towards me as well.  So, at the behest of the grandmother, I kept the Hanuman Chalisa at the head and after that, after selling the horse, I slept peacefully.

Anecdote (3)

Sultry nights

----------------

Dinesh Kukreti

Now you must have come to know that what is the importance of Nani's stories in my life.  Then I was studying in the sixth grade, when Nani left the village and started living with us permanently.  That's what we wanted too.  At that time we used to live in a rented house.  We used to have a lot of room and kitchen.  The rent for that room was only 50 rupees.  Then 50 rupees used to be as important as five thousand rupees.  Kotdwar is a very hot city and we had come from a cooler area like Joshimath then.  So, it was not easy for us to bear such heat.

By the way, due to being in the deep, it is very hot in my village Bhalgaon too.  But, in the morning and evening and at night, the cold winds blowing from the surrounding forest add to the atmosphere.  Whereas, Kotdwar is a part of Bhabar and the hot winds coming from the plains here scorch the body.  What to say about the heat wave that runs in the scorching afternoon of the brother-in-law.  There is a power failure on it for hours and the terror of mosquitoes separately.  In those days, power cuts throughout the night used to be common.  At times, even during the day, electricity was absent for hours.  The biggest thing is that we didn't even have a fan at that time.

We spent almost two-three years of summer without a fan.  At that time we used to sleep in the courtyard or on the terrace at night.  We used to have three sun beds, one of which was permanently kept outside the house.  We used to lay this charpai in the chowk (courtyard) during summers.  This cot was mine and grandmother's.  I slept with my grandmother.  In the sweltering heat, I could not sleep for hours, so I would ask my grandmother to tell the story every day.  Nani had a never-ending quota of stories, so every night she would tell a new story.  Most of the stories were of kings and queens.

The wazir would also be the main character in a story.  Apart from this, there would have been different types of other characters as well.  I still remember some stories in the same sequence.  Best of all, I liked the stories of Sant-Basant, Rag-Thag and Lindarya Chhavara.  Many stories were inspirational and many would bring awareness.  Lots of fun.  I will try to narrate these stories to you one by one.  So!  Nani would always try to walk me before narrating the story, but where was I supposed to believe?  Eventually, in front of my insistence, Nani had to give up.

Before narrating the story, it used to be the condition of the grandmother that I must give Hungra after every sentence, that is, I must keep doing it.  So that it seems that I am listening to the story seriously.  However, sometimes while telling the story, Nani would fall asleep and sometimes I would.  If Nani felt sleepy, I would wake her up, whereas Nani never woke me up when I fell asleep.  Rather, she would have strengthened my sleep by giving me a pat.  The next night I would insist on Nani to complete that unfinished story.  There are many stories that you want to hear again and again.  Perhaps it was the magic of Nani's storytelling style, which could not live up to hearing a story over and over again.

At times, the grandmother would start telling her own story very clearly.  But, as soon as I felt that this is the story of Nani, I would immediately ask for another narration and Nani would have to obey me.  This series of stories continued throughout the summer.  Really!  What was that period?  Whenever I remember that period, my body and mind shudder in an invisible form.  There is a huge treasure trove of memories, of that era with me, which is increasing with every link.  It seems that not one book of stories, but many books will be ready.  Let go!  Let's see what happens.

Anecdote ( 2)

Such was my meternal grandmother

---------------------------------------------

Dinesh Kukreti

Talking about the stories of Nani, then why not first get acquainted with the personality of Nani.  I have said in the past that Nani was a completely illiterate woman, but she could hardly have matched her in terms of understanding of her concerns.  Her maternal grandmother's name was Pitambari Devi and her height was five feet.  Although Nani was often ill, her vitality never allowed her to feel that way.  However, within two-three months, he used to develop fever with chills.  During this she could not even get out of bed.  The grandmother herself used to tell that her jaundice had worsened.

Due to illness, in later years, Nani had lost sight in one eye.  He could see blurred with that eye.  The doctors said that black cataract has come in that eye, so it is not possible to get the light back.  Nani was so sensitive towards relationships that she never took the names of elders in her life-long relationship.  Some of her father-in-law's name in the family was Badri, so she used to call Badrinath as a big deity.  Similarly, the month of Jeth was called Ghamuk Maina (sunny month) and Sawan was called Chhaluk Maina (rainy month).  He had great faith in God.  She used to say that everything is happening only by the grace of God.

Sometimes I used to argue with my grandmother on this issue.  Then the grandmother would say that you will not understand the glory of God.  He gives the fruits of our previous births.  So!  These were all matters of his personal beliefs, on which it was not possible for me to change his perception, at least.  Despite all this, our grandmother was like a tree in whose shade we find coolness.  Nani was loved by all the relatives on his maternal side, so Nani used to spend some time with him in between.  For example, the grandmother had a younger sister and an elder sister.  The children of both of them (my maternal uncle) called her small (Kansi) mother and bad (jethi) mother.

Nani used to visit Rishikesh to elder maternal grandmother's daughter (my aunt) and Roorkee to younger grandmother's daughter (meri Jethi).  His children also used to love him very much by calling him big grandmother and small grandmother.  Regrettably, in the hustle and bustle of life, I could not maintain these relationships of affection.  The Jethi of Roorkee is no longer in this world, but even the aunt from Rishikesh could not be met for the last twenty years.  Whereas, she lives somewhere in Dehradun.  There has never been any reconciliation with the children of aunt and daughter-in-law, so the question of recognizing each other does not arise.  There is nothing to be gained by discussing who is to blame for this.

नानी

------

Maternal Grandmother

-------------------------------

Dinesh Kukreti

I take great pleasure in hearing stories.  The stories of nanny that have been heard in childhood.  That is why even today I am a very good listener, just as I am a good reader.  Still don't know why, since morning the thought is coming in my mind that I should also tell a story.  Not light-hearted, sixteen annas level.  So... typical literary.  Now that this thought has come and I am almost ready in my mind, why not take you back to the times of my childhood when storytelling used to be common.  Rather, to be honest, storytelling was like food for life then.

Today I am able to muster the courage to become this story, behind it too, somewhere the inspiration of my grandmother is there.  Being a book lover, I have read a lot of literature of the country and the world.  In this too, Russian literature will be at number one.  But, the place of grandmother as grandmother is hardly found in any other literature except Russian literature.  Absolutely not as an inspiration.  Only the great Russian novelist Maxim Gorky could bring this honor to Nani.  Incidentally, in my life too, the role of Nani was important.  The role of grandmother was limited to the rituals.

Actually Grandma didn't like my family.  That's why I never had an emotional connection with my grandmother.  The first seven years of my childhood were spent in the village.  Then grandmother also lived in the village, but separately.  Maa says I loved Dadi, but I don't think it is a reality.  Sometimes what you see is not true.  Most of my grandmother's time was spent near my aunt in Kotdwar.  The families of Tauji people were also dear to Dadi.  Only my family used to be the grit of grandma's eyes.  Even my grandmother hated my grandmother.  While Nani's mind was pure and she used to forget everything by shedding tears.

Technically Nani lived with us, whereas I believe we lived with Nani.  Nani was completely illiterate, but she had a better understanding of the world than us, probably because of the stumbling blocks from time.  When I was in ninth, Nani left the world.  He breathed his last before my very eyes.  Then his age would have been 65 or 66 years.  First of all, I shouldered the body of Nani's body. However, I did not go to Haridwar to give her the last farewell, but was not allowed to go.  I must have been sixteen years old then.

Dadi had also come to Kotdwar at the last minute, but she did not mind coming to our house even then.  She used to live in Tauji's house.  The distance from Tauji's house to my house would have been hardly 200 meters, but Dadi seemed to be miles away.  Then three or four times I also went to meet Dadi, but her behavior remained like that of a distant relative.  Grandmother breathed her last in Tauji's house.  I was probably 18 then.  To be honest, I have never had any regrets about my grandmother's existence or not.  It's not today as well.  There are no such memories associated with grandmother, which should be remembered.

Here, even after leaving the world, Nani remained in my memories for years, but gradually with time, the storms of life took their place.  Despite this, I can never forget the beautiful moments spent with my grandmother.  In the moments of leisure, those moments always remind me of childhood in the form of anecdotes and will always remind me.  Will continue to be my inspiration for writing.  Where I find myself standing, these moments also play an important role in that.

Does anyone go like this

-------------------------------

Dinesh Kukreti

The passing away of Kailash Bhatt, a well-known artist and artist of the folk, at such a young age is a shocking incident.  He was definitely ill, but not in such a way that he turned his back on the people like this.  It was only on 23rd February, when I had gone to Kotdwar.  It would have been four o'clock in the evening.  Kailash Bhai got a call that he was ill and Shri Mahant Indiresh had come to the hospital for a checkup.  I asked what was the problem, then said, 'There are stones in the kidney and there is a lot of problem.  At present, they are in line to get MRI done.  If you have any identity then give me a call.'

I said 'okay' and immediately requested PRO friend Bhupendra Raturi of Shrimahant Indiresh Hospital to help him.  Also sent them to Kailash Bhai and Kailash Bhai on their phone numbers on WhatsApp.  Then I called Kailash Bhai and his wife picked up the phone.  After about five minutes, Ratudiji got a call saying that the conversation is over, now he does not need to stand in line.  After sometime I called Kailash Bhai again to find out whether the MRI was done or not, but there was no response.  Nor did his call come again.  ... and just a while back, when I read the news from Gopeshwar, my mind became numb.

I was introduced to Kailash Bhai in the year 2014 during Shri Nanda Devi Rajjat.  Although, I had already heard about them, but it was known only in the Rajjaat and the reason for this was the traditional Mirzai.  The Mirzai which we had forgotten with time, Kailash Bhai not only gave him new life, but also made him the center of attraction of the country and the world.  He not only tried to preserve this traditional dress by adapting Mirzai according to the present, but also instilled interest in traditions in the new generation.  This is the reason why Mirzai has been the first choice of travelers in all the annual Lokjaats organized after the year 2014.

Kailash Bhatt, a resident of Binjoli village of Ekeshwar block (Chundkot) in Pauri district, had been working for the last 24 years to give a new identity to traditional clothes by living in Haldapani, Gopeshwar in Chamoli district.  52-year-old Kailash had inherited this art, which he distinguished by his hard work.  He was not only a skilled craftsman but also had a deep understanding and faith in social and cultural concerns.  As the name suggests, Kailash had great attachment to the mountain.  While living in the mountain, he not only gave a new dimension to the costumes and costumes here, but he was also one of the few craftsmen of the state, who proved himself in a very short time.

Kailash Bhai introduced his skills to the present generation with traditional clothes like Mirzai, Jhakota, Angri, Tunkha, Woolen Dasalwar, Sankot, Angocha, Gamchha, Daunkha, Pahari Topi, Lavva, Angadi Gati and Ghungti.  The result of this is that today the attraction towards traditional clothes is increasing in the new generation.  Apart from this, he also prepared Mangaler dress, Pandava dance dress and Bagdwal dance dress to be worn while singing Mangal song on the occasion of marriage.  Everyone was crazy about the hill cap made by him.  Rather, it would not be an exaggeration to say that Kailash Bhatt and Pahari Topi were synonymous with each other.  From the assembly and parliament to Bollywood, the cap made by him increased the value of the mountain.  There was a great demand for this cap in the events of the hill fraternity across the country.

After the kingship, Kailash Bhai used to talk frequently on the phone.  Two years ago, he had opened his showroom here in Dehradun near Ghantaghar, but due to Corona, it had to be closed again.  Whenever I used to talk to him, he used to say, 'Brother!  My life resides in the mountain itself.  Let's see how long I can stay in Dehradun.  My intention was to give some research information on Kailash Bhai and his skill in detail.  It is a pity that this dream did not come true.

One day in this January, Kailash Bhai got a call that he was in Patel Nagar and wanted to meet with me.  Unfortunately this was also not possible because I had not reached the office then.  If only!  I would have been in the office at that time.  Kailash Bhai wanted to present me the mountain cap he had made, but fate probably did not approve of it either.  It was my wish that this Diwali, during the Diwali festival of Uttaranchal Press Club, the entire executive body should be presented with a Pahari hat made by Kailash Bhai.  See the irony that he did not even respect my sentiment.
