Four-Armed Idol, but Only Two Arms Worshipped
--------------------------------------------------------------
In the sanctum sanctorum of the Raghunath Temple, a six-foot-tall four-armed idol made of black stone (Shyam Pashan) is enshrined. However, during worship, two of the arms are kept covered. Unlike other temples, this divine temple does not lean on any rock or wall but stands independently at the very center of the sanctum sanctorum. Along the circumambulation path (Parikrama) of the complex, there are smaller temples dedicated to Shankaracharya, Garuda, Hanuman, Annapurna, and Lord Shiva. The complex also features a Rajasthani-style umbrella pavilion (Chhatri), where prayers are offered during ceremonies.
101 Steps from the Market to the Lion Gate (Singh Dwar)
--------------------------------------------------------------
A golden kalash sits at the pinnacle of the main temple, and a massive idol of Sri Ram is consecrated in the sanctum sanctorum. The feet and hands of the idol are adorned with ornaments, and a golden crown rests on its head. Holding a bow and arrow in his hands and a shield at his waist, Sri Ram is flanked by Mother Sita on one side and Lakshman on the other. Outside the temple stands a brass idol of Garuda, while to the right of the temple, Lord Badri Vishal, Mahadev, and Kaal Bhairav are enshrined. One has to climb 101 steps to reach the Singh Dwar of the temple from the Devprayag market. The Raghunath Temple was severely damaged in the earthquake of 1803. It was later repaired by Daulatrao Scindia, the grandfather of Madhavrao Scindia of the Gwalior royal family.
Nagara Style Temple with a Katyuri Style Spire
--------------------------------------------------------------
The temple is built in the Nagara style. When the Himalayan architectural style developed after the initial construction, a three-doored structure (Tibari) with pillars on all four sides was built near the Aamlak. It was covered with copper sheets to create an umbrella-like shape, and Kalash pots were placed in its center. This was the influence of the Katyuri spire style, which explains the use of wood on the umbrella pavilion. Observing this wooden spire, the renowned historian Dr. Shiv Prasad Dabral 'Charan' considered this temple to be among the prominent temples of the Katyuri spire style. However, in reality, it is a Nagara-style temple. According to the description of Nagara-style temples in Hindu temple layout by Sri Narayan Chaturvedi, the structure of this temple belongs to the Nagara style. Only the spire is in the Katyuri style.
11 Chapters on Devprayag in the Kedarkhand of 'Skanda Purana'
--------------------------------------------------------------
The name of Devprayag is taken with immense reverence among the 108 divine religious sites (Divya Desams) of India and Nepal. The origin of the holy river Ganga is traced right here at the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers. For this reason, Devprayag holds the highest significance among the Panch Prayags. There are 11 chapters dedicated to Devprayag in the Kedarkhand of the 'Skanda Purana'. It is said that Lord Brahma meditated upon Lord Vishnu here for ten thousand years and obtained the Sudarshan Chakra from him, which is why Devprayag is also called Brahmatirtha and Sudarshan Kshetra. It is also believed that Lord Vishnu appeared here after Sage Dev Sharma performed penance for 11,000 years. He promised Dev Sharma that he would return to Devprayag in the Treta Yuga, a promise he fulfilled by coming here during his incarnation as Rama. It is said that Lord Ram himself named this place Devprayag after Sage Dev Sharma. Dhaneshwar temple stands to the east of Devprayag, Tandeshwar to the south, Tanteshwar to the west, Baleshwar to the north, and the Adi Vishweshwar temple is situated at the center.
Devprayag in the Eyes of Atkinson
--------------------------------------------------------------
In 'The Himalayan Gazetteer' published in 1882, Edwin Thomas Atkinson writes—The village of Devprayag was situated on a small flat piece of land beneath a steep cliff, at a height of one hundred feet above the water level. Behind it was a precipice of a mountain rising 800 feet high. To reach above the water level, there is a large flight of steps cut into the rocks, which even cattle can climb. Apart from this, two rope suspension bridges are available to cross over to the other side of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers.
Devprayag Remained Under the Control of the Pal Dynasty
--------------------------------------------------------------
The Chinese traveller Xuanzang (Chen Hui) referred to Devprayag as Brahmapuri in his writings. In the seventh century, it was also known by the names Brahmatirtha and Srikhand Nagar. In the ancient South Indian text 'Araval', it has been recognized as Kandevenukatinagaram. From 1000 to 1803 AD, like the rest of Garhwal, Devprayag remained under the rule of the Pal dynasty, whose rulers were later called Shahs of the Panwar (Parmar) dynasty.
Tilang Bhatts Arrived from the South in the 8th Century
--------------------------------------------------------------
In the eighth century, Tilang Bhatt Brahmins arrived in Devprayag from South India along with Adi Shankaracharya. It is said that the Tilang Brahmins are the traditional pilgrimage priests of Badrinath. According to a preserved copper plate from the 12th century, Abhai Pal, the 37th descendant of the Panwar dynasty, granted the Tilang Bhatts the right to be the pilgrimage priests of Badrinath.
When Kings Visited, the Temple Used to be Covered
--------------------------------------------------------------
In the year 1785, the Panwar King Jayakrit Singh took his own life at the Raghunath Temple in Devprayag. It is believed that the king's four queens also committed Sati here, to whom the Rani Sati Temple is dedicated. It is believed that they cursed the Panwar dynasty, due to which even today no member of the Panwar dynasty looks towards the temple. Even in the past, whenever the king visited Devprayag, the temple was completely covered. On the inscriptions present just behind the temple, the names of 19 people are carved in the Brahmi script, about whom it is said that they took Jal-Samadhi (ritual drowning) here at the confluence to attain heaven.
Connection of Five Incarnations of Vishnu to This Ancient Town
--------------------------------------------------------------
Five incarnations of Lord Vishnu, including Sri Ram, are believed to be connected to Devprayag. The place where he appeared in the form of Varaha (boar) is called Varaha Shila, and where he appeared in the Vaman (dwarf) form is called Vaman Cave. Near Devprayag, on the peak of Nrisinhachal mountain, Lord Vishnu graces the site in his Narsimha form. The base of this mountain was the penance ground of Parashurama, who meditated here before killing King Sahasrabahu, the murderer of his father. Near this, at Shiv Tirtha, Sri Ram's sister Shanta performed penance to marry Sage Shringi. It was as a result of Sage Shringi's Yajna that King Dasharatha was blessed with Sri Ram as his son. Sri Ram's guru also resided at this place, which is known as Vashistha Cave. A mountain to the north of the Ganga is considered the penance ground of King Dasharatha. The hill on which Devprayag is situated is called Giddhanchal. This place is believed to be the penance ground of Jatayu. Legend has it that at the base of the hill, Sri Ram liberated a beautiful Kinnar woman who had been turned into a spider due to a curse by Brahma. Near this very spot, King Indradyumna of Odisha had worshipped Lord Vishnu.

2000 Years of History and a Journey of 101 Steps: The Sacred Abode of Lord Raghunath, Devprayag
--------------------------------------------------------------
Dinesh Kukreti
Located 70 kilometres ahead of Rishikesh on the way to Srinagar, the town of Devprayag is situated at the sacred confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers. Even in the modern era, this town has preserved its ancient grandeur. Nestled within this holy town is the historic Raghunath Temple. Built on an elevated platform in the upper part of the town, this temple stands approximately 80 feet high and is constructed of large stones without the use of any cement. Its period of construction is believed to date back 1700 to 2000 years.
It is said that Guru Shankar, the spiritual guide of King Shyam Pal (722–782 AD)—son of King Kanakpal of the Panwar (Parmar) dynasty who had migrated to Garhwal from Dharanagari (Malwa)—constructed the spire of this temple using wood. Since both Guru Shankar and Adi Shankaracharya belong to the 8th century, a popular myth spread among the general public that the temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya. According to the Kedarkhand of the 'Skanda Purana', Lord Sri Ram meditated right here in Devprayag during the Treta Yuga to free himself from the sin of Brahmanahatya (killing a Brahmin) and established the Vishweshwar Shivling. This is the reason why the Raghunath Temple was established here, where Lord Vishnu is worshipped in the form of Sri Ram.
