We will definitely meet
-----------------------------
Dinesh Kukreti
Today when I am completely alone in my room, I suddenly remember Anjali. It seems as if Anjali is standing in front of me. It was just a few days ago when I met her unexpectedly after almost seventeen years. Some time back I had gone to my friend Narendra's place in Dehradun. Some circumstances arose that I had to stay there for fifteen days. My friend's father is a senior engineer in the 'Border Roads Organisation'. It was a Monday. I don't remember the exact date, it must have been 20th or 22nd of April. That day Narendra's father had organized a party at his house. The party was organized to celebrate Narendra's birthday. It has not been long since this family settled in Dehradun, so the acquaintances are limited, due to which only a few special people were invited to the party. In Narendra's family, I too have a place like a family member.  For this reason, I was playing an important role in organising the party there. Guests had started arriving, some of whom were Narendra's friends and the rest were his father's friends and relatives. Among the guests was a young couple. It was a very beautiful couple. The young woman was also holding a beautiful, flower-like child in her lap.

When I saw the couple, my eyes were fixed on the young woman for a few moments. A slight flash of light flashed in my mind. It felt as if I knew her before, but I did not remember when, how and where I met her. I tried to remember something by putting pressure on my mind, but it was all in vain. I kept thinking like this for a few moments, then suddenly broke the chain of thoughts surging in my mind. I thought, sometimes it happens that even when we meet someone for the first time, a person seems somewhat familiar. Then I got engrossed in my work.
All the members of the house were very happy with the arrival of that young couple. That young lady was also a guest and was busy welcoming the other guests. From this I guessed that this couple was special among the other guests. Narendra was also circling them a bit too much calling them brother-in-law. Just then his father addressed that young lady and said- "Daughter Anjali! Why are you getting worried unnecessarily, we are there to do the work."

When I heard the word "Anjali" from his mouth, that picture of seventeen years back came alive in my memory, when I was studying in the third class. Now I could not control myself. I was curious whether this was really the same Anjali of seventeen years back?

I asked Narendra- "Narendra! Who is this Anjali ji?"

"She is the daughter of my father's friend and my adopted sister." - Narendra said

"Is this Anjali ji the daughter of Subedar Major Kapoor sahab?"  It came out of my mouth involuntarily.

"Yes! Do you know him?" - Narendra said.

But... I did not hear his words. I was lost in the memories of seventeen years ago, which had suddenly come alive. All the incidents were floating in my mind like a movie.

At that time I was studying in third class in Joshimath. I must have been around eight-nine years old. My father was then serving in the army and was posted in Joshimath. We lived with our family in a Marwari village two kilometers below Joshimath. Father had enrolled me in third class in a local primary school in Marwari.

There were a total of 36 students in our class, out of which 35 were boys and only one girl. Her name was Anjali. Anjali was a chubby girl with average height, lean body and charming eyes. She was not more than nine years old. When she laughed, it seemed as if the waves of Alaknanda were rippling.  Anjali was very intelligent in studies. Her family had also come to Joshimath a few days ago.

In my childhood, I was shy about talking to girls. So initially, I did not talk to her at all. Being in the same class, if she herself said something, I would reply in "yes". But, gradually my shyness in talking to her went away. Now I started talking to her a lot. She used to sit in the front row, right in front of me, so whenever she needed anything, she would talk to me first. Anjali was the topper in the class in Mathematics, so she used to solve my problems too.

Now I had become so close to her that if she remained absent for even a single day, I would not feel like talking at all. Whatever was taught in the class that day, I would not even understand it. Both of us could not live without seeing each other's face. If Anjali did not see me in school, she would get angry. Then I would tell her random stories and she would burst out laughing. Both of us used to play together during the break.  Anjali loved the game of "Tiger-Goat", so she used to play "Tiger-Goat" with me everyday. The condition of both of us had become such that we could not stay peacefully at home even on Sundays.

There was a bond of intimacy between us which cannot be given any name. At this innocent age, our childlike love was unique. We did not even know what love is. Our love was as pure as the confluence of Alaknanda and Dhauli, which had infinite childlike purity.

While playing, sometimes I would pull her hair, and sometimes she would twist my ears. Sometimes we would have a fight and both of us would not talk to each other. But, all this did not last long. After some time she would say- "Anuj! Are you angry with me?"

If I did not reply, she would kiss my cheeks immediately. I would smile and then both of us would get busy playing. Other children in the class would laugh seeing us. In this way, she would wait for me even while going to school. Both of us would return home together.

In Joshimath, schools remain closed for one and a half months due to extreme cold during winters. It is difficult to even step out of the house in the snow. That year too, winter holidays were about to start. We both had now reached the fourth class. During this time, father got posted in Arunachal Pradesh, so we too had to leave Joshimath. Just the thought of leaving Joshimath made me sad, but leaving was a compulsion.

The next day when I went to school, I was lost. I did not feel like talking to anyone. Anjali was upset seeing my condition, finally she asked - "Anuj, why are you sad today?" I kept staring at her silently.

"Are you angry with me Anuj?" - Anjali said

"No". I replied flatly.

"Then why don't you tell me what has happened to you?" - Anjali said

Anjali, I will leave now." I said softly.

"Where?"

"To my home, very far from you."

Why? Where did Anjali say.

Father is going to Arunachal Pradesh. Yesterday he was saying that he will send you home now.

"Will you not study here?" - Anjali asked.

"No Anju. With whom will I stay alone?" - I told her.

On hearing my words, Anjali's face turned pale. She became silent and started staring at me. After being silent for some time, she again said- "Anuj, will you forget me?"

"No! How can I forget you?"

"Will you remember me every day?"

"Yes Anju! I will remember you every day. Will you also remember me?"

"Yes Anuj! Now with whom will I play the game of tiger-goat without you?" - Anjali said innocently.

I remained silent. She broke my trance and said, "Anuj when will you all go home?"

"Father was telling me that we will leave on the tenth day today."

Anjali rested her head on my shoulder, her eyes were filled with tears. Gently removing her head, I said- "Now we will hardly be able to meet Anju."

"Anuj, don't talk like this. We will definitely meet. Well, do this, give me this ring which is on your finger." - Anjali said.

I actually had a ring in my hand, which father had brought from Badrinath. God knows where its stone had got lost. I said- "Anju, this is a useless ring, God knows where its stone has also got lost."

"No Anuj! This is a very nice ring. You give it to me."

"What will you do with it?"

"I will see it every day and remember you."

I took the ring off my finger and put it on her finger. That day, both of us returned home silently. That's it! We kept looking at each other all the way.

The next seven-eight days also passed in the same sadness. While coming, I could not even see her. For some days, I was very sad.  While eating or sleeping, Anjali's innocent image used to come in front of me. I used to cry silently at night.

The wheel of time kept moving at a steady pace. Slowly I forgot her. The incidents that happened in childhood are not remembered till this age. Then the company of new friends, new environment of a new place and all the ups and downs of life. But… today the doll-like Anjali of seventeen years ago was standing in front of me as a beautiful young woman. Then suddenly Narendra shook me and the strings of old memories suddenly broke. I started looking at Narendra with some reluctant expression.

"Anuj! What happened to you suddenly?" - Narendra said.

"Nothing" - I replied.

"Where were you lost then? You didn't listen to a single word of mine." - Narendra said.

"Narendra! I had gone seventeen years ago with Anjali."

"What are you saying? Have you gone mad?" - Narendra said.

"No Narendra! I have not gone mad. This Anjali is my childhood friend."

"Do you know Didi?" - Narendra asked.

"I don't just know. I have spent the important one and a half years of my life with her."

On hearing this, Narendra kept staring at my face in surprise.

By evening, all the guests had left except me and Anjali. Narendra told me that Didi will stay here for a day or two. Jijaji had to go out somewhere for two days, so he has gone back. We both were busy talking, when Anjali came to the drawing room with tea.  When she started to return after serving tea, Narendra stopped her. She sat on the chair next to him.

Narendra introduced me to Anjali, "Didi, this is my friend Anuj. He will stay here for a few days." But Anjali did not remember anything. Narendra said further - "Didi! Did you not recognize Anuj? He recognized you as soon as you arrived."

Anjali said in surprised words - "Do you know me? But I am seeing you for the first time."

"Yes Anjali! Seventeen years ago, you and I used to study together in Joshimath. You used to play only with me. When I came back, we both were so sad. Then you said, Anuj! Give me your ring, I will remember you every day by looking at it. But... but... you..." I became emotional while saying this.

"Anuj...! Anuj... is it you? Did you recognize me Anuj? But I... no... I still have your ring. I have kept it very carefully. But... I have not seen it in the last few years. Anuj! I told you that we will surely meet, didn't I... and we really met." Anjali's eyes were welling up with tears of joy.

"Yes Anjali! You said it right. Anjali you have become so beautiful now. Even more beautiful than before. And... the child! What a cute child he is... he looks exactly like you."

Anjali remained silent. She was trying unsuccessfully to stop her tears. The atmosphere had become quite heavy. I could not see Anjali sad, so I wiped her tears and said - "Anjali. Seventeen years have passed, since then I have not played the game of 'tiger-goat'. You used to play very well. Won't you play with me today?"

"Anuj... you have not changed at all." Then she burst out laughing, just like she used to laugh seventeen years ago.

Life's paths

(The movement sharpened my writing)
--------------------------------------------------
Dinesh Kukreti

It was the year 1993. I had completed my M.Com studies, so I started looking for a permanent place to earn my livelihood. I wanted to work in the media, so I increased the pace of my writing. Along with that, my involvement in movements had also increased. In that period, where all I did not protest, where all I did not take out rallies, where all I did not get arrested, now all this seems like a matter of stories. To be honest, my involvement in movements sharpened my writing. It is said that to write well, it is also necessary to read well and these movements proved to be a book of experience for me. Now I had started sitting in the office of Amar Ujala in the evening. It was still the time to send news in envelopes, so the news written in the evening was sent in the next day's post.

Meanwhile, the fire of opposition to the Mandal Commission had started burning in the hills as well. The movement that started in small pockets was getting organised and taking the shape of the Uttarakhand State Movement. However, I and my colleagues clearly believed that neither any revolutionary change would come about by the formation of a separate state of Uttarakhand, nor was there much possibility of development of this mountainous region. Because change comes from ideas and we are not at all prepared for this. Today, twenty-four years after the formation of the state, this thinking has become a reality. The objectives for which the fight for a separate state was fought have gone into the background and selfish interests are hollowing out this state like termites. Well! We will discuss these points some other time, for now we are talking about how this movement that started in opposition to the Mandal Commission turned into a state formation movement and what role did youngsters like me play in it.

Let me clarify one thing here that I have never been against the Mandal Commission and an educated and mentally healthy person should not be. Reservation is born out of inequality and as long as the gap of inequality exists in our society, reservation should continue. But, then I and my colleagues were opposing the Mandal Commission and the reason for this was the absence of Other Backward Classes (OBC) in Uttarakhand. The number of castes which have been considered as Other Backward Classes in the Mandal Commission was negligible in Uttarakhand then. Obviously, this was depriving the youth of this mountainous region of their rights. Because when the Mandal Commission report was implemented, the OBC seats were to be filled by candidates from outside Uttarakhand. We wanted the movement to remain focused on this point, otherwise it would get distracted, but this could not happen and the movement became focused on the demand for a separate state. In such a situation, I and my colleagues also had to become a part of the state movement respecting the public sentiments.

The important thing is that during that period, the newspapers were also completely inclined towards the state movement.  Not because the newspapers were emotionally attached to the movement or the owners of the newspapers were well-wishers of Uttarakhand, but because the newspapers had to establish themselves in Uttarakhand and for this it was necessary to capture a large readership. Therefore, even if the news was of ten lines, there was no hesitation in printing 150 names in it. This had both advantages and disadvantages. The advantage was that it helped in taking the movement to its destination and the disadvantage was that by getting their names printed in the newspapers, many were later declared state agitators with the help of those cuttings. Many of them are in government jobs and many are taking pension as agitators. In contrast to all this, my story is something else. I was then a journalist as well as an agitator. Whichever procession I went to, I would cover it with full concentration. Along with this, I would also write articles regularly for various newspapers and magazines to give momentum to the movement. I used to write independently, so I was not accountable to anyone. By getting my name printed regularly in newspapers and magazines, a different identity was also established in the society. Whoever I met, respected me.  Then, I also got money for writing in magazines and newspapers, so many times I would stay awake the entire night to write articles.

During that period, I got good support from my friends Jitendra Chauhan and Arun Bahukhandi. Both of them were also associated with the weekly 'Thahro'. I mean to say that we had a good and strong team in 'Thahro' then. But, I was a little more enthusiastic, so the responsibility of writing editorials mostly remained with me. Here I had complete freedom to write, so I used to express my inner feelings easily. What a time that was. I never experienced such immense joy in writing, as I felt during the period of Uttarakhand movement. The cuttings of the articles written then are still safe with me. To be honest, this period played an important role in shaping me as a journalist and I completely became a part of the journalist fraternity of Kotdwar.

Dehradun became the Jerusalem of Garhwalis
------------------------------------
Dinesh Kukreti
In the last two decades, the race to leave villages and settle in cities and metropolises has increased rapidly in the mountainous region of Uttarakhand. In Garhwal division, it seems as if an undeclared movement and the unpromoted slogan 'Come to Dehradun, building a house in Dehradun is our birthright' have influenced most of the people and they are rushing towards Dehradun in the same way as Jews from all over the world once rushed towards Israel. It seems as if Dehradun is the Jerusalem of Garhwalis. For them, building a two-room house in Dehradun has become a fashion. Whoever has built a brick wall in Dehradun, he may think of himself as whatever, but in the eyes of others he has almost become God.

No! No one has any objection in settling in Dehradun, Kotdwar, Haldwani or anywhere else. Nor should there be.  Whoever finds it convenient can settle there without hesitation. The real worry of those who seriously ponder over social issues is that this migration from rural areas is taking place on a large scale and the villages are slowly getting deserted. This is the subject worth thinking about. However, this thing is not easily understood at a cursory glance. If seen, the relation of people with villages is centuries old. They faced all the hardships in these villages or it can also be said that they faced them considering them a natural part of life, but did not leave the village.

Yes! It is quite an old thing that the youth of the family were compelled to go to the plains for employment. There was no other option. Life cannot go on without money and no means of earning money has been found in the mountains till date. But, the point to consider is that earlier, the village is not 'abandoned', rather people used to work outside their whole life and finally return to the village to spend their old age. At present, on the contrary, very few employed people turn towards the village.

This aversion has some implications, which the sympathizers of urban villagers may not be able to understand easily. But, it is also a fact that the situation is not as depressing as the bad image of migration is presented. This migration tendency is especially seen in some specific type of village or area. Firstly, it is a mountain and on top of that, some villages are located in such places that the Amin would be breathless in making a map of those villages.  Life there is no less than a rigorous imprisonment. In these places, man can barely survive. Even after a year of hard work, it is a blessing if one gets enough food to survive for three months. In terms of water, most villages are like deserts. The roads are so far from the village that the person who carries the sick to the hospital is himself half dead by the time he reaches the road. The sick usually die before reaching the hospital.

Earning and eating in the city and going to the village to sleep at night may seem like a picnic, but how long will life go on like this? When everything needed (even fuel) has to be brought to the village from the city, then why should those who are capable not go to the city? Why and for how long should one keep working in such villages? Why should not a person do the same backbreaking work by living in the city or in the suburban areas around the city and get basic facilities like electricity and water?  After all, even the animals of cold regions come down a little in winters. Yes! It must be kept in mind that man should not become a slave of facilities. This will be his defeat. We must have enough strength in our arms that whenever there is no water in the tap, instead of worrying about water, we should be able to fill the bucket from the stream (natural source) and bring it.

If we look at it, it is not in the nature of man to turn his back on his birthplace. He has to leave his birthplace only out of compulsion. Government jobs are equally responsible for this, in which there is lack of accountability and neglect of the geography of the mountains is also clearly visible. The same tendency is working behind shifting the capital of Uttarakhand away from Gairsain. Roads also probably have an important role in this. It has also been seen that migration towards cities is happening more in those villages which are far away from the road and it can only be hoped that the road will reach there someday.

On the contrary, this tendency is much less in the villages situated near the roads. Almost every facility is available in these villages. Newspaper reaches early in the morning. Dish antennas are also seen on the roofs. There are medicine shops, mobile network and English schools are also easily available. There is no difficulty in bringing milk and vegetables from these villages to the city.  I have no hesitation in saying that life in these villages has become comparable to that in cities. Now, some NGOs also visit these villages to know about the situation. It is a different matter that their aim is also to spend the budget.

Now the question is, can't things like development, prosperity and happiness walk on foot? Considering the complex geography of the hilly state, they will inevitably have to walk a little. We will also have to break the notion that our troubles will end just by building a house in Dehradun. Settling in Dehradun may be a pleasant feeling for us, but it will be meaningless to say that it will also make us experience real happiness. Never forget that when we don't know the destination, we reach where the road takes us. And...we know very well where the road is taking us.

Uttarakhand has many hues of folk culture, and each hue offers glimpses of nature in its enchanting forms. Whether it is the famous ‘Stone Bagwal’ of Devidhura in Champawat district or the ‘Andhudi Festival’ of the Upla Takanour region, celebrated at Dayara Bugyal in Uttarkashi district, which has now gained a special identity as the ‘Butter Festival’. This is such a unique festival that butter and buttermilk rain down on one another. Come! Let us also become a part of this festival of nature-

A Unique Holi of Butter and Buttermilk in the Himalayas
----------------------------------------------
Dinesh Kukreti
You must certainly have heard about the unique tomato Holi festival ‘La Tomatina’ celebrated in Spain, a European country. In much the same way, a Holi of butter and buttermilk is also played in the Uttarakhand Himalayas, known as the Andhundi Festival (Butter Festival). Dedicated to nature, this festival is organized at the famous Dayara Bugyal (alpine meadow), located in the Upla Takanour region of Uttarkashi district at an altitude of 11,000 feet above sea level. Tourists from India and abroad also arrive at Dayara in large numbers to enjoy this special festival. This festival is celebrated on Bhadrapada Sankranti. This year, the Sankranti falls on August 16. Come! Let us also behold the beauty of Dayara while getting drenched in showers of butter and buttermilk.

A Festival of Prosperity in Nature’s Lap
-------------------------------------------------------
Dayara Bugyal, spread over an area of 28 square kilometers, is 42 km by road from Uttarkashi city and a six-kilometer trek from Raithal village in Bhatwari block, and the tradition of celebrating the Andhundi Festival has continued here for generations. In fact, as soon as the summer season begins, people from Raithal and the surrounding villages move with their livestock to their chhanis (temporary houses built for livestock) located in the bugyal region, and return to the villages only after celebrating the Andhundi Festival at the end of summer. During this period, the unexpected increase in the milk yield of the livestock due to their diet of alpine grass brings prosperity to the villagers’ homes. Therefore, every year in mid-August, they celebrate this festival to express gratitude to nature. During this time, the nature deity is worshipped. The Holi of buttermilk-butter and milk-curd is itself a part of this worship.

The Celebration of the Butter Festival Begins as Soon as the Pot of Butter Is Broken
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To participate in the Andhundi Festival, the palanquin of the revered Sameshwar deity of Panchgai Raithal as well as Natine, Bandrani, Kyark and Bhatwari, accompanied by musicians, and the Pashwas of the five Pandavas, arrive at Dayara Bugyal. According to folk tradition, during this time Sameshwar deity blesses the festival-goers by walking on Kafuwa dangaris (small axes). Then, after offering milk, curd, buttermilk and butter collected from the chhanis to the forest deity and other local gods and goddesses, young men dressed as Radha-Krishna break a pot of butter, and the celebration of the Butter Festival begins. Instead of gulal, villagers smear milk and butter on one another and play Holi. A huge crowd of tourists gathers here to witness this.

Holi Was Earlier Played with Cow Dung
--------------------------------------------------------
Earlier, Holi was played with cow dung during the Andhundi Festival. Over time, when the festival became associated with tourism, villagers began playing Holi with butter and buttermilk. This gave the Andhundi Festival widespread recognition as the ‘Butter Festival’. Local people believe that their livestock thrive and provide nutritious milk because of the grass of the bugyal. Radha-Krishna are also symbolically worshipped at this festival.

The Enchanting Splendor of Raas and Tandi Spreads Around
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
During the Butter Festival, tourists are served rotis made from mandua and wheat flour along with butter, ghee, milk, curd and other traditional dishes. At the same time, the enchanting splendor of traditional folk dances Raas and Tandi unfolds. The dancing steps of groups of women and men create a captivating atmosphere to the melodious rhythms of the dhol-damau. It seems as though all of nature itself is swaying.

There Is Much More Here Besides Velvet Grass
------------------------------------------------------------------
Dayara Bugyal offers a rich diversity of colorful wildflowers, alpine herbs, butterflies and animals and birds. On this trek, one can also spot Himalayan blue poppies, orchids, rhododendrons, Himalayan monals, pheasants, eagles, musk deer, Himalayan black bears, foxes and more. Besides, from here you can also admire peaks such as Bandarpoonch, the Gangotri range, the Srikanta range, Black Peak, Draupadi Ka Danda and others.

One Hundred Kilograms of Butter, Two Quintals of Buttermilk
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thousands of people participate in Spain’s ‘La Tomatina’ festival. This festival is also held in August and approximately 2,50,000 pounds of tomatoes are used in it. Meanwhile, at Uttarkashi’s Butter Festival, Holi is played with around two quintals of buttermilk and one hundred kilograms of butter. Milk and curd are also used in abundance.

Harela, the festival of prosperity of folk life
-------------------------------------------------------
Dinesh Kukreti
The folk festival Harela is a symbol of happiness, prosperity and greenery. This festival is a symbol of keeping the farming alive throughout the year, and at the same time it also informs about the beginning of a new season, therefore it is also called Rituparva. The message of unity, harmony and harmony in the society is hidden behind celebrating Harela. When joint families are falling apart, then this festival teaches everyone to live together. No matter how big the joint family is, Harela is sown in one place only, that is, in the ancestral house. Harela is also connected to the folk science of the hills. It gives an estimate of the quality of the seed and the germination percentage. Therefore it is also called the festival of seed testing. Harela is celebrated on Kark Sankranti (Pratipada Tithi of Shravan month) just before sowing.  This festival which was once limited to some parts of Kumaon and Garhwal division, has today become a folk festival of entire Uttarakhand including the temporary capital Dehradun and with time it is gaining prestige at national and international level. ...So come! Let us also become a part of this festival and pray for the prosperity of folk life.

Lessons of coexistence of nature and man and conservation of nature
-----------------The uniqueness of the mountain folk life is the environmental consciousness inherent in it. The folk festival Harela is a reflection of this environmental consciousness. This festival gives us the message of preserving rivers, mountains, stones, soil and greenery.  The meaning is - 'Live, stay awake, survive and prosper, be like the grass with green roots, spread like the jackal, till there is snow in the Himalayas, till there is water in the Ganges, may this day and this month continue, may the four directions of the sky be there, may you have the intelligence of a fox, may you be like the life of a fox' (meaning may you live and remain awake, may this day of Harela come and go again and again, may your family flourish like the grass, may you get the expanse of the earth, may you attain the height of the sky, may you get the strength of a lion and the intelligence of a jackal, may you remain in this world as long as there is snow in the Himalayas and water flows in the Ganga and the Yamuna….) If seen, this good wish contains the sacred feeling of 'Jived Sharad Shatam', and also the lesson of coexistence of nature and man and conservation of nature.

Harela, a folk festival promoting mixed farming
----------------------------------------------------------
Harela festival is directly seen in the role of establishing harmony with nature. This festival is also connected to folk science and biodiversity. The process of sowing Harela and its growth in nine-ten days can be seen as a kind of seed germination test. This gives an easy prediction of what the upcoming crop will be like. The tradition of sowing mixed seeds in Harela promotes Barahnaaja or mixed cropping. Mixed cropping is very important for sustainable agriculture, which is a demand of the present as well as the future. Mixed farming is a better option to get rid of the growing population, decreasing cultivable land and falling groundwater level.

Welcoming the God of Nature by planting Harela
------------------------------------------------------------
If we look at the cultural aspect of Harela, newly married women come to their maternal home on this day and migrants to their homes. Those who are unable to go home due to some reasons, even today their relatives send them Harela by post or through some acquaintance. Harela is also associated with the worship of Lord Shiva. It is said that Shiva loves Sawan very much. He comes to his in-laws' place Devbhoomi in this month and the residents here welcome this God of Nature by planting greenery. During this time, idols of Shiva-Parvati and Shiva family are made from pure clay and natural colors and they are offered Swale and Urad dal pakodas along with Harela.

Harela is sown at the place of worship in the house or in the village temple
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to tradition, ten days before the festival, seven types of grains (barley, wheat, maize, gram, mustard, urad and bhat) are sown in a ringal or bamboo basket or a leaf plate in a special process at the place of the deity in the house or in the village temple. First a layer of soil is spread in the basket and then the seeds are sown on it. This process is repeated five to six times. Then these baskets are placed at the place of the deity and the seeds are watered daily with water sprinkles. In two-three days these seeds germinate and take the shape of seven-eight inch long grass by the time of Harela festival. These baskets are protected from direct sunlight. On the ninth day they are weeded out with a pomegranate twig and on the tenth day it is cut. At some places there is a tradition of cutting Harela on the ninth day.  After cutting Harela, the homeowner consecrates it with tilak, sandalwood and Akshat.

Festival of the Sun's Dakshinayan
-----------------------------------------
Harela sown on Shravan Sankranti has special importance from the point of view of Indian time calculation and monsoon science. On this day, the Sun God enters the Capricorn line from the Dakshinayan i.e. Cancer and gradually the nights start getting longer. From a spiritual point of view, this festival is associated with Shiva Vivah. On this day, the Shiva family is worshipped and Harela is offered to him. On the other hand, from the point of view of conservation of nature, Harela is also a festival of filling up dry canals and ponds and building new reservoirs.

Harela comes three times a year
---------------------------------------
Harela is such a festival, which comes not once but three times in a year. The people of Uttarakhand celebrate this festival at the beginning of Chaitra, Sawan and Ashwin (Kwar). Among these, the Harela festival falling on the first day of Sawan has been given the highest importance, because it is a symbol of the greenery of Sawan.

Pindalu's Patyud is unmatched
----------------------------------------
Dinesh Kukreti
These days the greenery of Pindalu (Pinalu) leaves is mesmerizing in a neighbor's kitchen garden, but the neighbor does not know how useful these Pindalu leaves are. Perhaps he and his family never ate Pindalu's Patyud (Patod). Otherwise these leaves would not have been teasing like this. These are the days of rainy season to enjoy the taste of Patyud. Patience is required to make this special dish of the hills and a lot of hard work is also required. But, the pleasure of eating it is beyond words. ...So let's leave the stories and talk about Pindalu leaves today. Monotony in every sphere of life makes one stagnant, so this kind of change is absolutely necessary. We also start that change by asking some Pindalu leaves from the neighbor, so that we can teach you how to make Pindalu's Patyud-

Method of making Patyud
---------------------------------
First of all separate the fibers of Pindalu or Pinalu leaves and wash them well and let the water dry. Prepare a thick gram flour solution in a wide vessel or bowl. Add green coriander, ginger-garlic paste, roasted cumin, ajwain, bhang seeds, soda, a pinch of asafoetida, two tablespoons of lemon juice and salt and chilli as per taste. Now dip the Pindalu leaves in the gram flour solution and roll them separately or one above the other in a cylindrical shape. Tie it well with a thread so that the roll does not open and heat oil in a pan and fry the Patyud on low flame till it becomes golden brown. After frying well, remove them from the stove and after cooling down a bit, serve them to family members and friends with soybean, bhat, sesame or green chutney. You can also enjoy Patyud with hot tea.

If you want, you can also cook the patud on steam. For this, you need a vessel which is divided into two parts with the help of a net. Water is filled in its lower part and in the upper part, patud is prepared using the above method and kept. When the water is hot, its steam cooks these patud. Patud will be cooked in about 20 minutes. Then take them out of the vessel and cut them into round pieces and put two tablespoons of oil in a pan or wok and temper it with jakhiya and fry these pieces till they become crispy. Lo ji, hot patud are ready. Come! Enjoy them together.

Ingredients required for making patud
--------------------------------------------------
Pindalu leaves, gram flour, turmeric, oil, celery, roasted cumin, hemp seeds, baking soda, four-five chopped green chillies, red chilli powder, salt, green coriander, ginger-garlic paste and asafoetida.

(Note: The quantity of ingredients depends on the number of people for whom the Patyuda is being prepared. The quantity may increase or decrease accordingly.)
