Come, Let’s Explore the 'Mystical Trek' of Dyalishera!
------------------------------------------------
By Dinesh Kukreti
Uttarakhand is home to many such untouched tourist destinations and trek routes that have not yet caught the eye of domestic and international tourists. However, these places are so beautiful that once you visit them, you feel like going back again and again. One such destination is the Dyalishera Trek, located in the Jyotirmath development block of Chamoli district, which has been declared the ‘Trek of the Year 2026’ by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB). Situated in the Garhwal region of the Uttarakhand Himalayas at an altitude ranging from 11,808 to 12,267 feet, this approximately 22 km long trek lies near the famous Kuari Pass and Pangarchulla Peak route. Due to its mysterious beauty, it is also known as the 'Mystical Trek' (Talismi Trek). The main centers of attraction on this route are the Dyali Bugyal (alpine meadow), dense forests, beautiful valleys, paddy fields, and Hanuman Tal.
A special trekking expedition under the 'Trek of the Year 2026' commenced on September 1 and will continue until March 30, 2027. Under this initiative, a subsidy of ₹2,000 per person is being given to the first 300 trekkers. This subsidy is available on a 'first-come, first-served' basis through local tour operators registered with the tourism department. Bringing Dyalishera onto the tourism map will create new employment and self-employment opportunities for local youth and villagers. The development of this new trekking route will also help reduce human pressure on the already heavily congested Kuari Pass trek.
Dyali Bugyal Captivates the Heart
The most beautiful stop on this trek is Dyali Bugyal (Alpine Meadows). As you cross the tree line, vast fields of velvety green grass welcome you. In winter, these meadows cover themselves completely in a white blanket of snow. From here, one can get grand and clear views of famous mountain peaks like Nanda Devi, Dronagiri, Hathi-Ghoda Parvat, and Chaukhamba.
Witness to Rich Biodiversity
This trek offers a glimpse of dense forests and rich biodiversity. The trail passes through dense forests of Oak and Rhododendron (Buransh). On this trek, you can easily spot the Himalayan Thar and Uttarakhand’s state bird, the Monal.
Hanuman Tal: A Spiritual Experience
Before reaching Dyalishera, the sacred Hanuman Tal falls along the way. Surrounded by dense forests, velvety meadows (Bugyals), and the Pangarchulla and Kuari Pass regions, this is a serene and holy high-altitude lake that enhances its spiritual significance. Camping by the shores of Hanuman Tal and experiencing its tranquility in the morning is nothing short of a spiritual experience.
Unique 'Dinga Sera' and Bhumyal Devta
Villagers believe that in ancient times, the gods themselves used to cultivate paddy at this high altitude. 'Sera' translates to a paddy field. Near the Sera lies the temple of Bhumyal Devta (the local guardian deity), where the locals still perform special prayers to protect nature.
Best Suited for Novice and Experienced Trekkers Alike
Categorized as an easy-to-moderate level trek, this 22 to 25 km (round trip) long trail is suitable for both fit beginners and experienced trekkers. The duration of the trek is five days and four nights (starting and ending at Rishikesh/Haridwar). The best time for trekking is between April to July and September to December.
Essential Carry-Ons: Warm Clothes and Necessary Medicines
This is a high-altitude trek. During the winter expeditions (December to March), the temperature drops significantly. Trekkers visiting during this period must carry at least three to four layers of warm clothing (thermal inners, fleece jackets, down jackets), waterproof trekking shoes with a good grip, trekking poles, headlamps or flashlights, UV-protected sunglasses, and essential medicines for Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
How to Reach
To trek Dyalishera, one has to reach Jyotirmath from Haridwar or Rishikesh. Karchho village, which is well-connected by road, is located 16 km from here. A sufficient number of hotels and homestays are available here. The trek begins from Karchho, from where Dobriya Camp is 6 km away. The distance from Dobriya Camp to Dyalishera Summit and back is 8 km. Descending from Dobriya back to Karchho requires covering a distance of 8 to 10 km. After this, trekkers return to Jyotirmath and head back to Rishikesh or Haridwar. Some adventure operators extend this trek slightly to connect it with the nearby famous Pangarchulla Peak, offering a 6-day combined trek.
