2000 Years of History and a Journey of 101 Steps: The Sacred Abode of Lord Raghunath, Devprayag
--------------------------------------------------------------
Dinesh Kukreti
Located 70 kilometres ahead of Rishikesh on the way to Srinagar, the town of Devprayag is situated at the sacred confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers. Even in the modern era, this town has preserved its ancient grandeur. Nestled within this holy town is the historic Raghunath Temple. Built on an elevated platform in the upper part of the town, this temple stands approximately 80 feet high and is constructed of large stones without the use of any cement. Its period of construction is believed to date back 1700 to 2000 years.
It is said that Guru Shankar, the spiritual guide of King Shyam Pal (722–782 AD)—son of King Kanakpal of the Panwar (Parmar) dynasty who had migrated to Garhwal from Dharanagari (Malwa)—constructed the spire of this temple using wood. Since both Guru Shankar and Adi Shankaracharya belong to the 8th century, a popular myth spread among the general public that the temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya. According to the Kedarkhand of the 'Skanda Purana', Lord Sri Ram meditated right here in Devprayag during the Treta Yuga to free himself from the sin of Brahmanahatya (killing a Brahmin) and established the Vishweshwar Shivling. This is the reason why the Raghunath Temple was established here, where Lord Vishnu is worshipped in the form of Sri Ram.

Four-Armed Idol, but Only Two Arms Worshipped
--------------------------------------------------------------

In the sanctum sanctorum of the Raghunath Temple, a six-foot-tall four-armed idol made of black stone (Shyam Pashan) is enshrined. However, during worship, two of the arms are kept covered. Unlike other temples, this divine temple does not lean on any rock or wall but stands independently at the very center of the sanctum sanctorum. Along the circumambulation path (Parikrama) of the complex, there are smaller temples dedicated to Shankaracharya, Garuda, Hanuman, Annapurna, and Lord Shiva. The complex also features a Rajasthani-style umbrella pavilion (Chhatri), where prayers are offered during ceremonies.

101 Steps from the Market to the Lion Gate (Singh Dwar)
--------------------------------------------------------------

A golden kalash sits at the pinnacle of the main temple, and a massive idol of Sri Ram is consecrated in the sanctum sanctorum. The feet and hands of the idol are adorned with ornaments, and a golden crown rests on its head. Holding a bow and arrow in his hands and a shield at his waist, Sri Ram is flanked by Mother Sita on one side and Lakshman on the other. Outside the temple stands a brass idol of Garuda, while to the right of the temple, Lord Badri Vishal, Mahadev, and Kaal Bhairav are enshrined. One has to climb 101 steps to reach the Singh Dwar of the temple from the Devprayag market. The Raghunath Temple was severely damaged in the earthquake of 1803. It was later repaired by Daulatrao Scindia, the grandfather of Madhavrao Scindia of the Gwalior royal family.

Nagara Style Temple with a Katyuri Style Spire
--------------------------------------------------------------

The temple is built in the Nagara style. When the Himalayan architectural style developed after the initial construction, a three-doored structure (Tibari) with pillars on all four sides was built near the Aamlak. It was covered with copper sheets to create an umbrella-like shape, and Kalash pots were placed in its center. This was the influence of the Katyuri spire style, which explains the use of wood on the umbrella pavilion. Observing this wooden spire, the renowned historian Dr. Shiv Prasad Dabral 'Charan' considered this temple to be among the prominent temples of the Katyuri spire style. However, in reality, it is a Nagara-style temple. According to the description of Nagara-style temples in Hindu temple layout by Sri Narayan Chaturvedi, the structure of this temple belongs to the Nagara style. Only the spire is in the Katyuri style.

11 Chapters on Devprayag in the Kedarkhand of 'Skanda Purana'
--------------------------------------------------------------

The name of Devprayag is taken with immense reverence among the 108 divine religious sites (Divya Desams) of India and Nepal. The origin of the holy river Ganga is traced right here at the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers. For this reason, Devprayag holds the highest significance among the Panch Prayags. There are 11 chapters dedicated to Devprayag in the Kedarkhand of the 'Skanda Purana'. It is said that Lord Brahma meditated upon Lord Vishnu here for ten thousand years and obtained the Sudarshan Chakra from him, which is why Devprayag is also called Brahmatirtha and Sudarshan Kshetra. It is also believed that Lord Vishnu appeared here after Sage Dev Sharma performed penance for 11,000 years. He promised Dev Sharma that he would return to Devprayag in the Treta Yuga, a promise he fulfilled by coming here during his incarnation as Rama. It is said that Lord Ram himself named this place Devprayag after Sage Dev Sharma. Dhaneshwar temple stands to the east of Devprayag, Tandeshwar to the south, Tanteshwar to the west, Baleshwar to the north, and the Adi Vishweshwar temple is situated at the center.

Devprayag in the Eyes of Atkinson
--------------------------------------------------------------

In 'The Himalayan Gazetteer' published in 1882, Edwin Thomas Atkinson writes—The village of Devprayag was situated on a small flat piece of land beneath a steep cliff, at a height of one hundred feet above the water level. Behind it was a precipice of a mountain rising 800 feet high. To reach above the water level, there is a large flight of steps cut into the rocks, which even cattle can climb. Apart from this, two rope suspension bridges are available to cross over to the other side of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers.

Devprayag Remained Under the Control of the Pal Dynasty
--------------------------------------------------------------

The Chinese traveller Xuanzang (Chen Hui) referred to Devprayag as Brahmapuri in his writings. In the seventh century, it was also known by the names Brahmatirtha and Srikhand Nagar. In the ancient South Indian text 'Araval', it has been recognized as Kandevenukatinagaram. From 1000 to 1803 AD, like the rest of Garhwal, Devprayag remained under the rule of the Pal dynasty, whose rulers were later called Shahs of the Panwar (Parmar) dynasty.

Tilang Bhatts Arrived from the South in the 8th Century
--------------------------------------------------------------

In the eighth century, Tilang Bhatt Brahmins arrived in Devprayag from South India along with Adi Shankaracharya. It is said that the Tilang Brahmins are the traditional pilgrimage priests of Badrinath. According to a preserved copper plate from the 12th century, Abhai Pal, the 37th descendant of the Panwar dynasty, granted the Tilang Bhatts the right to be the pilgrimage priests of Badrinath.

When Kings Visited, the Temple Used to be Covered
--------------------------------------------------------------

In the year 1785, the Panwar King Jayakrit Singh took his own life at the Raghunath Temple in Devprayag. It is believed that the king's four queens also committed Sati here, to whom the Rani Sati Temple is dedicated. It is believed that they cursed the Panwar dynasty, due to which even today no member of the Panwar dynasty looks towards the temple. Even in the past, whenever the king visited Devprayag, the temple was completely covered. On the inscriptions present just behind the temple, the names of 19 people are carved in the Brahmi script, about whom it is said that they took Jal-Samadhi (ritual drowning) here at the confluence to attain heaven.

Connection of Five Incarnations of Vishnu to This Ancient Town
--------------------------------------------------------------

Five incarnations of Lord Vishnu, including Sri Ram, are believed to be connected to Devprayag. The place where he appeared in the form of Varaha (boar) is called Varaha Shila, and where he appeared in the Vaman (dwarf) form is called Vaman Cave. Near Devprayag, on the peak of Nrisinhachal mountain, Lord Vishnu graces the site in his Narsimha form. The base of this mountain was the penance ground of Parashurama, who meditated here before killing King Sahasrabahu, the murderer of his father. Near this, at Shiv Tirtha, Sri Ram's sister Shanta performed penance to marry Sage Shringi. It was as a result of Sage Shringi's Yajna that King Dasharatha was blessed with Sri Ram as his son. Sri Ram's guru also resided at this place, which is known as Vashistha Cave. A mountain to the north of the Ganga is considered the penance ground of King Dasharatha. The hill on which Devprayag is situated is called Giddhanchal. This place is believed to be the penance ground of Jatayu. Legend has it that at the base of the hill, Sri Ram liberated a beautiful Kinnar woman who had been turned into a spider due to a curse by Brahma. Near this very spot, King Indradyumna of Odisha had worshipped Lord Vishnu.

Deceitful Politics: The ‘Architects of Destiny’ Who Forgot Not Just Culture, But Concern Too
-------------------------------------------------------------
By Dinesh Kukreti
The return of Jallikattu — the bull-taming sport in Tamil Nadu — can be called a distortion of a progressing society. Yet if we dig deeper into its implications, we find somewhere in the background the feeling of remaining connected to one’s roots. A similar tradition exists in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand: the Bagwal of Devidhura, held on Raksha Bandhan (Shravan Purnima). This folk game of pelting stones at one another also has its own cultural aspect. That is why people, instead of stopping it, largely changed its form without altering its essence. Now, instead of stones, fruits and flowers are thrown at each other; so we can even call it the Fruit-and-Flower Bagwal. The same is expected to happen sooner or later with the Jallikattu festival celebrated during Pongal between 14 and 17 January. Nevertheless, one thing stands clearly proved: how important roots are for any society. But alas! Our governments have never given importance to the roots. Whereas the very demand for the formation of Uttarakhand state was driven by the sentiment of protecting one’s identity. During the movement, a resounding slogan echoed from every corner of Uttarakhand: “We will eat kodu-jhangora and build Uttarakhand.” Was this merely a slogan? If viewed scientifically, the answer is definitely “No.”

In reality, kodu-jhangora is a symbol of that labour power which ploughed the chest of the mountains and made them fertile; of that agrarian society which faced mountain-like challenges and never allowed the mountains to break; of that multi-coloured culture and those traditions which filled the steps with rhythm even amid hardships; of that sweet mother tongue (Dudhboli) whose sweetness gave the hill society a distinct identity in the country and the world. But what happened? We did get a half-baked identity as a separate state, yet from the very first day we began being deceived by those who called themselves “our own.” Evaluating the past 26 years, we find that the leaders and officials who sat as the “architects of destiny” kept working only to erase Uttarakhand’s cultural identity. Leaders born and brought up in the soil of the hills, the moment they set foot in Haldwani and Dehradun, forgot not only their culture and values but also their concerns. As a result, the real Uttarakhand is still struggling for its identity today, just as it used to struggle when it was part of Uttar Pradesh. There are not one but many examples before us, and I consider it extremely necessary to mention them in sequence in this election season.

They Made Their Own Mother Tongue Alien
-------------------------------------
What greater irony could there be that all eight MPs of the Congress earlier and the BJP now — both in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha — have never strongly taken the initiative to include Garhwali-Kumaoni in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. Nor has any government of Uttarakhand considered it necessary to grant Garhwali-Kumaoni the status of the second official language of the state. Whereas Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, which were formed along with Uttarakhand, have given second-language status to their local languages, and these languages are also part of the curriculum.

The Colour of the Folk, Distant from the Folk
-------------------------------------
The neglect of folk arts in Uttarakhand is such that to this day we have not been able to place any of our folk dances on a par with Punjab’s Giddha, Gujarat’s Garba, Assam’s Bihu, Kerala’s Kathakali or Odisha’s Odissi. Kumaoni Chholiya dance has received some recognition, but even in that the government and the Culture Department had no hand. It became possible only through the efforts of the carriers of folk tradition. The Culture Department’s role in the promotion and advancement of culture has remained limited to sending “setting” troupes. That is why cultural groups rooted in the soil are unable to participate in important events held across the country and the world.

Folk Instruments Distanced from Livelihood
-------------------------------------
The fate that folk instruments and their players have met in Uttarakhand is perhaps rarely seen elsewhere. That is why Auji, Das, Bajgir, Dholi and others have been forced to leave their ancestral occupations and search for livelihood in the cities. The government did declare the dhol as the state instrument, but the dhol players are not in a position to support their families by playing the dhol. What is actually needed is to bring traditional instruments into common practice, and that is possible only when we link them directly with livelihood. For this, it is necessary to make traditional instruments mandatory in all events connected with folk and the state, and to declare the dhol a folk instrument in practical terms. Here, “folk instrument” means an instrument of all, and the dhol can become everyone’s instrument only when we take it out of the confines of narrowness — that is, free it from caste barriers. And… this is possible only when our policymakers show firm willpower.

Aipan Is No Less Than Madhubani
-------------------------------------
Look at the condition of local products and handicrafts — there is no one to ask about them. The whole world knows Bihar’s Mithila Madhubani painting, but even the people of Uttarakhand do not properly know about the equivalent Aipan (Alpana) art of Kumaon. The ancient woodcraft is in a similarly pitiable state. The old houses built in the hill districts are proof that once no one could match us in wood carving and painting. But gradually the market swallowed up all these folk arts. Had the governments wished, they could have protected the traditional arts and strengthened the economy of this hill state.

Traditional Dishes Still Keeping the Tradition Alive
-------------------------------------
Uttarakhandi cuisine has also never been on the agenda of the governments. On our hill stations we can serve idli-dosa and chowmein to tourists from the country and the world, but not mandua roti, bathua parathas, green garlic chutney, arsa, swale, kulath ka phanu, chainsu and other traditional dishes. The surprising thing is that even the leaders of the hills have not developed a liking for Pahadi dishes. This is also one of the major reasons for the emptying of the hills.

The Dream Film Industry That Never Became Reality
-------------------------------------
Coming to the Uttarakhandi film industry, here too neglect has dominated these 26 years. That is why we could neither project Uttarakhand as an excellent shooting location, nor take any strong initiative beyond subsidy allocation for strengthening the regional film industry. Excellent shooting locations exist here. Although with the announcement of the state’s film policy in 2016 the Uttarakhand Film Development Council also came into existence, this half-hearted initiative does not appear very effective. One can understand how serious the governments are about the film industry in Uttarakhand.

Chamoli's Saptakund Trek: A Thrilling Journey to the Seven Mysterious Lakes of the Himalayas
By Dinesh Kukreti
Let's embark on a journey to a mesmerizing world of seven lakes (kunds) nestled in the lap of the remote Himalayas! Located 26 km from Jhinjhi village in the Nijmula Valley of Dasholi block, in the border district of Chamoli, Uttarakhand, this heritage of seven lakes is known as 'Saptakund'. Situated at the foothills of the Nanda Ghunti mountain range at an altitude of 16,400 feet above sea level, these seven lakes are spaced approximately half a kilometer apart from one another.
Reaching here requires navigating an extremely arduous trek. However, for adventure tourists and wanderers, Saptakund is a thrilling journey. Out of the seven lakes in the Saptakund group, the water in six of them—Parvati Kund, Ganesh Kund, Narad Kund, Nandi Kund, Bhairav Kund, and Shakti Kund—is so freezing that no one dares to even take a dip. In stark contrast, the water in Shiv Kund remains as hot as Badrinath's Taptakund. Bathing in this hot water lake amidst the icy region instantly vanishes the fatigue of tourists. The annual Lokjat (folk pilgrimage) of Nanda Devi concludes on the banks of this sacred lake.
Bengali Trekkers Arrive in Large Numbers
It is believed that one part of Goddess Kali’s Khappar (sacred bowl) is located at Saptakund, while the other part is in Kolkata. Since Goddess Kali is the revered deity of Bengalis, a large number of them visit Saptakund every year to seek the Goddess's blessings.
Simbe Bugyal: A Grand Visual Testimony of Nature
From one end to the other, the Saptakund trek offers breathtaking views of the majestic Himalayan peaks. Furthermore, the cool shade of tree species like Oak (Banj), Rhododendron (Burans), Deodar, Kail, Khoru, and Bhojpatra on both sides of the trek ensures that you do not even feel the exhaustion.
In Simbe Bugyal, located 20 km away from Jhinjhi village on the Saptakund trek, hundreds of species of colorful flowers captivate the minds of tourists. Medicinal plants, rare Himalayan wildlife, and birds can also be spotted at every step. Throughout the trek, waterfalls scattering foam-like spray rejuvenate the inner soul.
Nanda's Ardha Lokjat Reaches Saptakund Every Sixth Year
Every sixth year, on the day of Bhadrapada Shukla Ashtami (Nandashtami), villagers from the entire Nijmula Valley, including Irani, Jhinjhi, Pana, Ramni, Durmi, and Pagna villages, gather here to worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Nanda. The Ardha Lokjat of Nanda Kurud (Dasholi Doli) halts at Saptakund on the day of Nandashtami. In other years, the annual Lokjat goes to Balpata Bugyal. Truly, the peace and tranquility experienced upon reaching Saptakund cannot be found anywhere else.
An Introduction to the Lakes of Saptakund
  • Parvati Kund: This is the first lake encountered in the Saptakund group, spreading across an area of about 500 meters.
  • Ganesh Kund: This lake is spread across an area of approximately 800 meters.
  • Narad Kund: This lake covers an area of 200 meters.
  • Shiv Kund: The largest in the group, this lake spans an area of about one kilometer. During the annual Lokjat, the Doli (palanquin) of Goddess Nanda is worshipped here. There is also a small temple at this site.
  • Nandi Kund: This lake is spread across an area of approximately 500 meters.
  • Bhairav Kund: The smallest lake in the group, it spans an area of one hundred meters.
  • Shakti Kund: Covering an area of about 200 meters, this lake is situated near the Nanda Ghunti peak. The other six lakes are located much lower than this one.
How to Complete the Saptakund Journey (Route Guide)
To travel to Saptakund, one must first reach Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun) or Rishikesh Railway Station. The journey ahead from there is as follows:
  • Rishikesh to Nandaprayag-Ghat: 240 km (by road)
  • Ghat to Pagna: 33 km (by road)
  • Pagna to Jhinjhi: 08 km (pedestrian trek)
  • Jhinjhi to Forest Department Tin Shed: 07 km (steep incline)
  • Tin Shed to Gaunchhal Odyar (Cave): 10 km
  • Gaunchhal Odyar to Simbe Bugyal: 03 km
  • Simbe Bugyal to Saptakund: 06 km (final stage)
Food, Accommodation, and Essential Travel Tips
There are adequate arrangements for food and lodging from Nandaprayag to Jhinjhi. Homestay facilities are available in almost every house in Jhinjhi village, where you can enjoy traditional mountain cuisine.
  • Best Time to Travel: Between May to June and September to November.
  • Precaution: Being a high-altitude Himalayan region, sudden rain and snowfall are common here. Given the extreme cold, embark on this adventurous journey only after undergoing a proper health check-up, and carrying essential medicines and adequate warm clothing.
  • Appeal: Maintain the sanctity of this untouched world of nature; do not litter plastic or garbage on the trek.
The Route from Irani is Extremely Difficult
Jhinjhi village in the Nijmula Valley serves as the base camp for Saptakund. Although Saptakund can also be reached from Irani village, the route from there is extremely hazardous. The path from Irani goes via Dugdh Kund to Saptakund. Ten villages come under the Nijmula Valley, including Gadi, Sainji, Byara, Nijmula, Gauna, Dhar Kumala, Durmi, Pagna, Jhinjhi, and Irani. All these villages are part of the Jhinjhi Irani Gram Panchayat.
