कुंभ की रिपोर्टिंग के लिए हम (मैं और छायाकार साथी राजेश बड़थ्वाल) हरिद्वार पहुंच चुके हैं। अब चार दिन यहीं रहना है। सुबह पौने दस बजे के आसपास हम यहां पहुंचे। मैं तो देहरादून से बिना कुछ खाये ही चल पडा़ था, इसलिए सबसे पहले नाश्ता ही किया। आफिस के पास ही एक होटल है, जहां घर का सा खाना बनता है। मैं जब भी रिपोर्टिंग के लिए हरिद्वार आता हूं, यहीं पर भोजन करता हूं। रेट भी अपेक्षाकृत यहां ठीक हैं। नाश्ता करने के बाद हम निकल पडे़ शहर के अवलोकन को। कल होने जा रहे सोमवती अमावस्या के स्नान की तैयारियां जांचने को।
कोरोना की काली छाया यहां भी साफ महसूस की जा सकती है। इसलिए श्रद्धालुओं की कोई भीड़ नहीं है। होटल भी खाली पडे़ हैं। वर्ष 2010 के कुंभ की रिपोर्टिंग को जब मैं यहां आया तो ओर से छोर तक कहीं भी पांव रखने को जगह नजर नहीं आ रही थी। लेकिन, इस बार हालात भिन्न हैं। इसलिए हमने भी यहां परमानेंट डेरा नहीं डाला। पिछले कुंभ में तो पूरे चार महीने यहीं रहना पडा़ था। हालांकि, इसका फायदा भी हुआ। एक तो कुंभ को व्यापक स्तर पर समझने और हर एंगल से रिपोर्टिंग करने का मौका मिला। वहीं, संन्यासी, बैरागी व उदासीन अखाडो़ं के बीच का फर्क भी मालूम पडा़। इससे पहले तक मुझे अखाडो़ं के बारे में इतनी गूढ़ जानकारी नहीं थी। लेकिन, आज मैं एक रिपोर्टर होने के नाते कुंभ और अखाडो़ं को बहुत बेहतर ढंग से समझता हूं। यही मेरी जमा-पूंजी है।
बहरहाल! शाम चार बजे के आसपास हम भटकते हुए आफिस पहुंचे। दोपहर का भोजन भी तभी हुआ। सुबह वाले होटल में ही। इसके बाद कल के सोमवती अमावस्या स्नान को लेकर खबरें लिखीं। इस स्नान में सभी तेरह अखाडे़ स्नान करने वाले हैं, जिनका स्नान क्रम तय हो चुका है। यह हरिद्वार कुंभ का पहला शाही स्नान है। कोरोना संक्रमण के चलते इस बार कुंभ की अवधि को एक माह सीमित कर दिया गया है। जबकि परंपरा के अनुसार हरिद्वार कुंभ 14 जनवरी से लेकर 30 अप्रैल तक चलता है। यही वजह है कि बीते ढाई माह की अवधि में हुए स्नानों को सरकार ने सिर्फ़ पर्व स्नान माना। शिवरात्रि का स्नान, जिसे पहला शाही स्नान कहा गया था, उसे भी पर्व स्नान ही माना गया। शिवरात्रि पर सातों संन्यासी अखाडो़ं ने स्नान किया था और अपने स्तर से उसे शाही स्नान घोषित किया था। लेकिन, सरकार की ओर से कुंभ का नोटिफिकेशन जारी न होने के कारण रिकार्ड में इसे पर्व स्नान ही दर्ज किया गया है।
रात साढे़ आठ बजे के आसपास हम आफिस से अपने होटल के लिए निकले। इस समय रात के ग्यारह बजे हैं और हम होटल की बालकनी में खुली हवा का आनंद ले रहे हैं। भोजन हो चुका है, जिसे हम आफिस के पास वाले होटल से पैक कराकर ले आए थे। हमारा होटल प्रेमनगर आश्रम से थोडा़ आगे है। संयोग से हरिद्वार का सबसे बेहतरीन होटल है यह। किसी परिचित की वजह से सस्ता पड़ गया, इसलिए यहां ठहरे हैं। सुबह जल्दी उठकर हरकी पैडी़ पहुंचना है, इसलिए सोने की कोशिश की जाए। बाकी बातें कल होंगी। शुभरात्रि!

Camped in Haridwar for Kumbh coverage

We (I and cinematographer partner Rajesh Bartwal) have reached Haridwar for reporting of Kumbh. Now stay here for four days. We reached here around quarter to ten in the morning. I had to walk from Dehradun without eating anything, so I had breakfast first. There is a hotel near the office, where homemade food is made. I eat here whenever I come to Haridwar for reporting. Rates are relatively fine here too. After breakfast we went out to see the city. To check the preparations for the bath of Somavati Amavasya, which is going to take place tomorrow.
The black shadow of the corona can also be felt clean here. Hence there is no rush of devotees. The hotels are also empty. When I came here to report the 2010 Kumbh, there was no place to put my foot anywhere from side to side. But, the situation is different this time. That is why we also did not camp here permanently. In the last Kumbh, it had to remain here for the whole four months. However, it also benefited. For one, Kumbh got the opportunity to understand widely and report from every angle. At the same time, the difference between ascetics, Bairagi and indifferent Akhado also came to know. Before this I did not know so much about the Akhadon. But, as a reporter today, I understand Kumbh and Akhado very well. This is my deposit.
However! We reached the office wandering around four in the evening. Lunch was also served. In the morning hotel itself. After this, news was written about the Somvati Amavasya bath of tomorrow. In this bath, all the thirteen Akhada are about to take bath, whose bathing order has been fixed. This is the first royal bath of Haridwar Kumbh. Due to corona infection this time the period of Kumbh has been limited to one month. Whereas according to tradition, Haridwar Kumbh runs from 14 January to 30 April. This is the reason why the government considered the baths held during the last two and a half months. The bath of Shivaratri, which was called the first royal bath, was also considered to be a festival bath. On Shivaratri, the Seven Saints Akhadons had taken a bath and declared it a royal bath from their level. However, due to non-release of notification of Kumbh by the government, it has been recorded as a festival bath in the record.
Around half past eight in the night, we left for our hotel from the office. It is eleven o'clock at the moment and we are enjoying the open air in the hotel balcony. The food has been done, which we had packed with the hotel near the office. Our hotel is a little ahead of Premnagar Ashram. Incidentally, this is the best hotel in Haridwar. Got cheaper due to an acquaintance, so stay here. Everyone has to get up early in the morning, so try to sleep. The rest will be tomorrow. good night!
