किताबों ने बदल दी जीवन की धारा

कामिक्स और उपन्यास पढ़ने का शौक तो मुझे था ही, धीरे-धीरे लिखने का चस्का भी लग गया। तब मैं कुछ दोस्तों के साथ म्युनिसिपैलिटी की सार्वजनिक लाइब्रेरी में भी कदम रख चुका था। लाइब्रेरी तरह-तरह की स्तरीय पुस्तकें थीं, लेकिन उन्हें पढ़ने के लिए सदस्यता लेना जरूरी था और यह मेरे लिए संभव नहीं था। हां! वाचनालय में बैठकर अखबार और पत्र-पत्रिकाएं जी-भरकर पढी़ जा सकती थीं। तब मैं संभवतः ग्यारहवीं में रहा हूंगा। अखबार और पत्रिकाओं में कविता, कहानियां व लेख पढ़कर मन करता कि काश! मैं भी लिख पाता। उस दौर में आकाशवाणी का भी मैं नियमित श्रोता हुआ करता था। आकाशवाणी नजीबाबाद का 'ग्राम जगत' और आकाशवाणी लखनऊ का 'उत्तरायण' कार्यक्रम तो शायद ही मैंने कभी छोडा़ होगा।

इसमें भी आकाशवाणी नजीबाबाद मुझे विशेष प्रिय था। यहां से तमाम परिचित और स्थानीय लोगों को कार्यक्रम प्रस्तुत करने का मौका मिलता था। इनमें मेरे मामाजी बृजमोहन कवटियाल भी शामिल थे। वो अक्सर गढ़वाली कविता पाठ करने आकाशवाणी जाया करते थे। उन्हें सुनकर मेरा भी मन आकाशवाणी में कविता पाठ करने का करता। सो, धीरे-धीरे मैं भी शब्द पिरोने लगा, गढ़वाली और हिंदी, दोनों भाषाओं में। पत्र-पत्रिकाओं के लिए लिखने कि प्रेरणा मुझे भारतेंदु हरिश्चंद्र को पढ़ते-पढ़ते मिली। हालांकि, आकाशवाणी जाना और पत्र-पत्रिकाओं में कविता-कहानी व लेख भेजना मैंने 1990 के बाद शुरू किया। इससे पूर्व तक मैं लिख तो रहा था, लेकिन सिर्फ स्वानत: सुखाय के लिए।

आकाशवाणी और पत्र-पत्रिकाओं तक मेरी पहुंच कैसे हुई, यह एक लंबी कहानी है। इस पर आगे तफ़सील से लिखूंगा, फिलहाल तो चर्चा पुस्तको से लगाव पर ही केंद्रित कर रहा हूं। पिछले अंक में मैंने जिक्र किया था कि कामिक्स के बाद में दस-दस रुपये में बिकने वाले उपन्यासों का दीवाना हो गया था। उपन्यास एक बार हाथ में आ जाता तो आखिरी पेज तक पढ़ने के बाद ही दम लेता था। उपन्यासों के साथ मुझे राजनीति, अर्थ, विज्ञान, कला, इतिहास व सामाजिक पृष्ठभूमि से जुडी़ पत्रिकाएं भी खूब पसंद आती थीं। 'अविष्कार' और 'विज्ञान पत्रिका' का तो हर महीने मुझे बेसब्री से इंतजार रहता।

मेरे जीवन में सबसे बडा़ बदलाव तो तब आया, जब मैं प्रगतिशील साहित्य की ओर उन्मुख हुआ। तब मैं महाविद्यालय में प्रवेश कर चुका था। वहीं मेरा संपर्क पढ़ने-लिखने वाले जनवादी छात्रों के संगठन स्टूडेंट्स फेडरेशन आफ इंडिया (एसएफआई) से हुआ। तब छात्र राजनीति का स्तर भी बहुत ऊंचा हुआ करता था। छात्र समाज के हर ज्वलंत मसले पर चर्चा करते और संघर्ष में भी सबसे आगे रहते थे। हम रोज शाम को किसी एक स्थान पर इकट्ठा होते और वैज्ञानिक दृष्टि से समाज और देश-काल-परिस्थितियों को समझने की कोशिश करते। मेरे अलावा तब सभी साथियों के पास अपनी व्यक्तिगत लाइब्रेरी भी हुआ करती थी। उन्हीं से सबसे पहले मुझे जनवादी साहित्य पढ़ने को मिला।

शुरुआत में मैंने प्रो.एसएल वशिष्ठ (सव्यसाची) की पुस्तकें पढी़ं। उन्होंने छोटी-छोटी ज्ञानवर्द्धक पुस्तकें लिखी हैं। तब उन पुस्तकों की कीमत दो रुपये से लेकर दस रुपये तक हुआ करती थी। उनमें 'समाज कैसे बदलता है', 'समाज को बदल डालो', 'इंदिरा गांधी से दो बातें', 'राजीव गांधी से दो बातें', 'धर्म', 'महिलाओं से दो बातें', 'कम्युनिस्ट क्या चाहते हैं', 'नौजवानों से', 'फिल्मों से', गांव के गरीबों से, रास्ता इधर है, उत्तरार्द्ध (त्रैमासिक पत्रिका) जैसी पुस्तकें प्रमुख थीं। इन पुस्तकों ने मेरा समाज को देखने का नजरिया ही बदल डाला। फिर तो जनवादी साहित्य को पढ़ने की भूख बढ़ती ही चली गई। सरदार भगत सिंह, मुंशी प्रेमचंद, बाबा नागार्जुन, महापंडित राहुल सांकृत्यायन, मोहन राकेश, ईएमएस नंबूदरीपाद आदि को इतना पढा़ कि लगने लगा मानो मैं इन सभी से व्यक्तिगत रूप से परिचित हूं।

इसी दौरान मेरा कमल दा (कमल जोशी) की लाइब्रेरी 'आकार' में भी आना-जाना होने लगा। उनके पास प्रगतिशील साहित्य का अकूत भंडार था। वे पुस्तकें हर किसी को नहीं देते थे और अगर देते भी तो समयावधि तय कर। लेकिन, मेरे लिए उन्होंने कभी ऐसी शर्त नहीं रखी और मैंने भी उन्हें कभी शिकायत का मौका नहीं दिया। इसके साथ ही राजनीति, अर्थशास्त्र व सामाजिक विज्ञान भी मेरे प्रिय विषय हो गए। कोई साथ दिल्ली या लखनऊ जाता तो उनसे मैं पसंदीदा लेखकों की दो-चार पुस्तकें अवश्य मंगा लेता। धीरे-धीरे मैं रूसी साहित्य की ओर उन्मुख होने लगा।

Books changed the stream of life

I was not only fond of reading comics and novels, but gradually I also got addicted to writing.  Then I had also entered the public library of the municipality with some friends.  The library had a variety of quality books, but reading them required a subscription and that was not possible for me.  Yes!  Newspapers and magazines could be read wholeheartedly by sitting in the reading room.  Then I might have been in class XI.  I wish to read poetry, stories and articles in newspapers and magazines.  I could write too.  I used to be a regular listener of All India Radio during that period.  I would hardly have left the 'Gram Jagat' program of Akashvani Najibabad and 'Uttarayan' program of Akashvani Lucknow.

In this too, Akashvani Najibabad was very dear to me.  From here all the acquaintances and local people used to get a chance to present the program.  Among them was my maternal uncle Brijmohan Kavatiyal.  He often used to go to All India Radio to recite Garhwali poetry.  Hearing them, I would also like to recite poetry in Akashvani.  So, gradually I also started adding words in both Garhwali and Hindi languages.  I got inspiration to write for magazines while reading Bharatendu Harishchandra.  However, I started going to All India Radio and sending poetry-story and articles to magazines after 1990.  Before this, I was writing, but only for self-satisfaction.

How I got access to All India Radio and magazines is a long story.  I will write on this in detail, for the time being, I am concentrating the discussion only on the attachment to books.  In the previous issue, I had mentioned that after the comics, I had become crazy about novels selling for ten rupees each.  Once the novel was in hand, it would have breathed after reading till the last page.  Along with novels, I also liked magazines related to politics, economics, science, art, history and social background.  Every month I would eagerly wait for 'Avishkar' and 'Science Magazine'.

The biggest change in my life came when I turned towards progressive literature.  Then I had entered college.  At the same time, I got in touch with the Students Federation of India (SFI), an organization of democratic students of education and writing.  At that time the level of student politics was also very high.  The students used to discuss every burning issue of the society and were also in the forefront of the struggle.  We would gather every evening at one place and try to understand the society and the country-time-situations from a scientific point of view.  Apart from me, then all the companions also had their own personal library. First of all I got to read democratic literature from him.

In the beginning I read the books of Prof. SL Vashistha (Savyasachi).  He has written small informative books.  Then the cost of those books used to range from two rupees to ten rupees.  They include 'How society changes', 'Change society', 'Two words from Indira Gandhi', 'Two words from Rajiv Gandhi', 'Religion', 'Two things for women', 'What do communists want', '  Books like 'Naujawan Se', 'Films Se' were prominent.  These books changed the way I looked at society.  Then the hunger to read democratic literature kept on increasing.  Read Sardar Bhagat Singh, Munshi Premchand, Baba Nagarjuna, Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayan, Mohan Rakesh, EMS Namboodiripad etc. so much that it seemed as if I was personally acquainted with all of them.

During this time, I also started visiting Kamal da's (Kamal Joshi) library 'Aakar'.  He had a vast store of progressive literature.  They did not give books to everyone and even if they did, they fixed the time period.  But, he never put such a condition for me and I also never gave him a chance to complain.  Along with this, politics, economics and social science also became my favorite subjects.  If someone went to Delhi or Lucknow with me, I would have definitely asked for two-four books of favorite authors from them.  Gradually I began to gravitate towards Russian literature.
