अग्नि दीक्षा

मैं अपने अनुभवों के आधार पर दावे के साथ कह सकता हूं कि जिस तरह की दृष्टि इन्सान को अच्छी और वैज्ञानिक सोच वाली पुस्तकें प्रदान करती हैं, वैसी किसी और माध्यम से संभव नहीं है। किस्सागोई की पिछली किस्त में मैंने जिक्र किया था कि मुंशी प्रेमचंद, महापंडित राहुल सांकृत्यायन, सव्यसाची, मोहन राकेश, सरदार भगत सिंह, राधामोहन गोकुल, यशपाल, विभूतिनारायण राय, राही मासूम रजा़, बीटी रणदिवे आदि को पढ़ने के बाद सोवियत साहित्य मेरे जीवन में प्रवेश कर चुका था। हालांकि,  सोवियत पत्रिकाएं 'स्‍पूतनिक' आदि मैं पहले ही काफी पढ़ चुका था, लेकिन साहित्य के रूप में पहली बार मैंने निकोलाई आस्त्रोवस्की (Nikolai Osteovsky) की 'अग्नि दीक्षा' पढा़। यह ऐसा अनूठा उपन्यास है, 80 वर्ष की वृद्ध काया में भी 20 साल के नौजवान जैसा जोश भर देता है।

इस रूसी उपन्यास How the Steel was Tempered का 'अग्नि दीक्षा' नाम से  हिंदी अनुवाद प्रसिद्ध उपन्यासकार, निबंधकार, समीक्षक एवं अनुवादक अमृत राय ने किया है। अमृत राय उपन्यास सम्राट मुंशी प्रेमचंद के छोटे पुत्र थे। उपन्यास का जैसा भावानुवाद उन्होंने किया, लगता है, जैसे हम मूल उपन्यास ही पढ़ रहे हैं। निकोलाई आस्त्रोवस्की स्वयं बोल्शेविक क्रांति का हिस्सा रहे हैं। एक क्रांतिकारी के रूप में उन्हें जिन-जिन कठिन चुनौतियों का सामना करना पडा़, वही इस उपन्यास का सार है। उपन्यास के मुख्य पात्र पावेल कोर्चागिन स्वयं निकोलाई आस्त्रोवस्की ही हैं। ऐसा भी दौर आया जब वे शारीरिक रूप से पूरी तरह अशक्त हो गए, लेकिन क्रांति के प्रति उनका जज़्बा जरा भी कम नहीं हुआ। उन्होंने तब कलम को हथियार बनाया और मैदान-ए-जंग में कूद पडे़।

विडंबना देखिए कि जब आस्त्रोवस्की आधा से अधिक उपन्यास लिख चुके थे, तब पांडुलिपि आग की भेंट चढ़ गई। लेकिन, यह क्रांतिकारी कहां हार मानने वाला था। उसने स्मृति के आधार पर न केवल नष्ट हो चुकी पांडुलिपि को रिकवर किया, बल्कि उपन्यास पूरा भी कर दिखाया।  उपन्यास पूरा करने से पहले आस्त्रोवस्की दोनों आंखें गंवा चुके थे, तब पत्नी तान्या उनकी सारथी बनीं और इस तरह दुनिया की एक सर्वश्रेष्ठ रचना का जन्म हुआ। मैं अब तक साहित्य की न जाने कितनी श्रेष्ठ रचनाएं पढ़ चुका हूं, लेकिन किसी को भी 'अग्नि दीक्षा' के समकक्ष खडा़ करने का साहस नहीं जुटा पाया। आज भी मेरी धारणा यही है कि जिसने 'अग्नि दीक्षा' नहीं पढा़, कुछ नहीं पढा़। यह सब लिखते-लिखते मेरी 'अग्नि दीक्षा' को फिर से पढ़ने की भावना प्रबल हो गई है।

हां, 'अग्नि दीक्षा' के बाद निकोलाई आस्त्रोवस्की ने एक और उपन्यास 'तूफान के बेटे' भी लिखा। यह उपन्यास अभी मैंने पढा़ नहीं है, लेकिन देर-सबेर जरूर पढूंगा। खैर! अग्नि दीक्षा के बाद मेरी सबसे प्रिय रचना मैक्सिम गोर्की (अलिक्सेय मक्सीमविच पेश्कोव) का उपन्यास मां (Mother) है। जिसे बार- बार पढ़ने को मन करता है। बेटे के लिए मां के संघर्ष को बयां करता इससे बेहतर दूसरा उपन्यास मैंने नहीं पढा़। मैक्सिम गोर्की के ही 'मेरा बचपन', 'मेरे विश्वविद्यालय', 'जीवन की राहों पर' जैसे उपन्यासों ने भी मुझे नई दृष्टि दी। हर परिस्थिति में सही को सही और गलत को गलत कहने की ताकत मुझे इन्हीं महान रचनाओं से मिली।

On the basis of my experiences, I can say with the claim that the kind of vision that good and scientific thinking books provide to the human being, it is not possible through any other medium.  In the previous installment of Kasagoi I had mentioned that Soviet literature came into my life after reading Munshi Premchand, Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayan, Savyasachi, Mohan Rakesh, Sardar Bhagat Singh, Radhamohan Gokul, Yashpal, Vibhutinarayan Rai, Rahi Masoom Raza, BT Ranadive etc.  had entered.  Although I had already read a lot of Soviet magazines, for the first time in the form of literature I read Nikolai Osteovsky's 'Agni Diksha'.  This is such a unique novel, that even an 80 year old physique fills the spirit of a 20 year old young man.

The Hindi translation of this Russian novel How the Steel was Tempered by the name 'Agni Diksha' has been done by the famous novelist, essayist, critic and translator Amrit Rai.  Amrit Rai was the younger son of the novel emperor Munshi Premchand.  The way he translated the novel, it seems as if we are reading the original novel.  Nikolai Astrovsky himself has been a part of the Bolshevik Revolution.  The arduous challenges he had to face as a revolutionary are the essence of this novel.  The main character of the novel is Pavel Korchagin himself Nikolai Astrovsky.  There came a time when he became completely disabled physically, but his passion for the revolution did not diminish in the slightest.  He then took the pen as a weapon and jumped into the Maidan-e-Jung.

Ironically, when Astrowski had written more than half the novel, the manuscript caught fire.  But, where was this revolutionary going to give up?  He not only recovered the destroyed manuscript on the basis of memory, but also completed the novel.  Astovsky lost both eyes before completing the novel, then wife Tanya became his charioteer and thus one of the world's best works was born.  I have read so many great works of literature till now, but I could not muster the courage to equate anyone with 'Agni Diksha'.  Even today my belief is that one who has not studied 'Agni Diksha' has not studied anything.  While writing all this, the feeling of re-reading my 'Agni Diksha' has become stronger.

Yes, after 'Agni Diksha' Nikolai Astrovsky also wrote another novel 'Sons of the Storm'.  I haven't read this novel yet, but I will definitely read it sooner or later.  So!  My favorite work after the initiation of fire is the novel Mother by Maxim Gorky (Alexey Maksimevich Peshkov).  Which he likes to read again and again.  I haven't read a better novel than this that describes a mother's struggle for her son.  Novels like 'My childhood', 'My university', 'On the paths of life' by Maxim Gorky also gave me a new perspective.  In every situation, I got the power to say right as right and wrong as wrong from these great works.
