खास होती है महीने की पहली तारीख

महीने के पहली तारीख मेरे लिए हमेशा खास होती है। इस दिन मैं मकान मालिक को किराये का भुगतान करता हूं। इसके लिए मैं चार-छह दिन पहले ही बैंक से पैसे निकाल लाता हूं। ये पैसे मैंने किराये के लिए ही बचाकर रखे रहते हैं। क्योंकि, तनख्वाह अमूूमन सात तारीख के बाद ही आती है और इतने दिन तक किराये को रोके रखना मुझे अच्छा नहीं लगता। हां! कभी-कभार मैं दो या तीन तारीख को भी किराये का भुगतान करता हूं, लेकिन सिर्फ़ कभी-कभार। इस बार भी ऐसा ही संयोग बनते दिख रहा है।

असल में मेरा मकान मालिक हमेशा ही मुझसे उधार लिए रहता है। लेकिन, जब उसे लौटाने में विलंब होता है तो मुझे स्पष्ट बता देता है। खासकर महीने के आखिरी दिन तो जरूर। ताकि मैं उधारी की रकम किराये में न काटूं। पिछले महीने भी मकान मालिक ने 30 तारीख को मुझे बता दिया था। लेकिन, इस बार या तो वो बताना भूल गया या फिर यह भूल गया कि उसने उधार लिया हुआ है। यही मेरी परेशानी की वजह है और इसी वजह से मैं आज किराया नहीं दे पाया।

यह मेरी सबसे बडी़ कमजोरी है कि मैं किसी से अपने ही पैसे वापस नहीं मांग पाता। ऐसे में कोई देना भूल जाए तो समझ लीजिए डूब गई रकम। मैं आज तक यह बात नहीं समझ पाया कि लोग उधार लेकर भूल कैसे जाते हैं। मैंने तो अगर किसी से एक रुपया भी लिया हो तो तब तक चैन नहीं मिलता, जब तक कि उसे लौटा न दूं। लेकिन, इस समय मेरी परेशानी यह है कि उधार की रकम किराये में काटूं या नहीं। अभी भी इसी ऊहापोह में हूं कि कल क्या किया जाए।

कभी मन में विचार आ रहा है कि इस माह अगर उधार की रकम वापस न मिली तो अगले माह किराये में से घटा दूंगा। फिर अचानक मन बदल जाता है कि नहीं, इसी बार हिसाब बराबर करना पडे़गा। तभी मन हल्का हो पाएगा। क्योंकि, उधार तो मकान मालिक ने आगे भी लेते रहना है। मेरी आदत है कि न देने का कोई बहाना भी नहीं बना पाता। हां! इसका एक फायदा जरूर है कि मकान मालिक का बर्ताव मेरे साथ परिवार के सदस्य की तरह ही रहता है।

पूरे दस साल हो गए हैं मुझे इस रूम में रहते हुए। मजाल क्या उसने कभी ऊंची आवाज में भी बात की हो। किराया भी पूरी तरह मेरी पहुंच का है। अन्य कालोनियों में तो किराया इतना अधिक है कि किरायेदार की हालत टाइट हो जाती है। बहरहाल! यह किरायेदार पुराण तो चलती रहेगी। फिलहाल तो सोने का वक्त हो गया है। चलिए! आप भी नींद का आनंद लीजिए। शुभरात्रि!!

The first of the month is always special for me.  On this day I pay the rent to the landlord.  For this, I withdraw money from the bank four-six days in advance.  I keep this money for rent only.  Because, the salary comes after 7th and I do not like to hold the rent for so long.  Yes!  Sometimes I pay rent even on the 2nd or 3rd, but only occasionally.  This time also a similar coincidence seems to be happening.

In fact my landlord always borrows from me.  But, when there is a delay in returning it, let me know clearly.  Especially on the last day of the month.  So that I do not deduct the loan amount in rent.  Last month also the landlord told me on 30th.  But, this time either he forgot to mention or forgot that he had taken a loan.  This is the reason for my problem and that is why I was not able to pay the rent today.

This is my biggest weakness that I am not able to ask anyone back my own money.  In such a situation, if someone forgets to give, then understand that the amount was lost.  I still do not understand how people forget by borrowing.  Even if I have taken a rupee from someone, I do not get rest until I return it.  But, at present my problem is whether to deduct the loan amount in the rent or not.  I am still confused about what to do tomorrow.

Sometimes a thought is coming in my mind that if the loan amount is not returned this month, then I will deduct it from the rent next month.  Then suddenly the mind changes whether or not, this time the calculations will have to be made equal.  Only then will the mind be at ease.  Because, the landlord has to continue taking the loan even further.  I have a habit that I can't even make up any excuse for not giving.  Yes!  There is definitely an advantage of this that the behavior of the landlord remains with me like a member of the family.

 It's been ten years since I lived in this room.  Wonder if he ever spoke in a loud voice?  The rent is also completely within my reach.  In other colonies, the rent is so high that the condition of the tenant becomes tight.  However!  This tenant mythology will continue.  For now, it is time to sleep.  Let go!  Enjoy your sleep too.  good night!!
