वो पहली मुलाकात---------------------

21 साल पहले की बात है, जून की आठ तारीख थी, जब रजनी से मेरी पहली बार मुलाकात हुई। तब मैं अमर उजाला में रिपोर्टर हुआ करता था। घर वालों के हिसाब से उम्र बीती जा रही थी, इसलिए मेरी शादी में अब वे और विलंब नहीं करना चाहते थे। मैंने भी तय कर लिया था कि अब घर वालों से इस विषय में कोई तर्क-वितर्क नहीं करूंगा। मौसी ने मेरे लिए यह रिश्ता ढूंढा था। संयोग से मैंनै रजनी को पहले से ही देखा हुआ था। लेकिन, घर वालों ने तय किया कि आठ जून को लड़की देखने जाना है। इसके लिए सुबह का वक्त तय किया गया।

आठ जून सुबह दस बजे के आसपास हम रजनी के घर पहुंचे। मेरी बहन तो उसे देखते ही बोली- "तू ही मेरी भाभी बनेगी"। लेकिन, मैं बिना उसकी इच्छा के कुछ भी कहने की स्थिति में नहीं था। सो, मैंने रजनी से बात करने की इच्छा जाहिर की। हमारी पांच-सात मिनट बात हुई। मैंने उससे स्पष्ट कह दिया कि मुझे बस! गुजर लायक ही पैसा मिलता है। हां! आने वाले समय में स्थिति सुधरना तय है। वह कुछ नहीं बोली। इसके बाद हम वापस लौट गए। उस दिन बारिश हो रही थी, इसलिए मेरे पास छाता भी था। सो, मैं सीधे आफिस चला गया।

यह वह दौर है, जब सप्ताह में सातों दिन की नौकरी होती थी। इस बीच मैं हेमवती नंदन बहुगुणा गढ़वाल विश्वविद्यालय के बिड़ला परिसर से बीजेएमसी (बैचुलर आफ जर्नलिज्म एंड मास कम्युनिकेशन) की डिग्री ले चुका था। अब यह तय था कि मुझे पत्रकारिता में ही करियर बनाना है। इसलिए कम पैसे भी मुझे संतुष्टि प्रदान करते थे। खुशकिस्मती से तब मैं खबरें लिखने और खबरों के संपादन में महारथ हासिल कर चुका था। बस! अब विचार था कि दिल्ली, मेरठ या देहरादून की राह पकडी़ जाए। कोटद्वार से नजदीक होने के कारण देहरादून मेरी प्राथमिकता में था। लेकिन फिलहाल तो शादी करनी थी और यह रजनी की "हां" पर निर्भर था।

आज इस किस्से को मैं यहीं पर विराम दे रहा हूं। आगे क्या हुआ, रजनी ने "हां" कही या "ना", इसकी जानकारी मैं अगली किश्तों में दूंगा। हां! एक बात जो मुझे आपको बतानी है, वह यह कि उस दिन रजनी के घर मेरे साथ, छोटी बहन के अलावा पिताजी, मौसी व द्वारिका भाई भी गए थे। द्वारिका भाई मेरी बुआ के सबसे बडे़ लड़के हैं। बहरहाल! हमेशा की तरह रात काफी हो चुकी है और मेरे सोने का वक्त भी हो गया है। मैं जानता हूं कि इस समय आप भी मुझे झेल रहे हैं। इसलिए, माफी के साथ शुभरात्रि!!

और हां! सोने से पहले मैंने अपनी डायरी में दर्ज किया- आठ जून 2000। आज पहली बार मैं किसी लड़की को देखने गया, विवाह के उद्देश्य से। साथ ही गंभीर होकर भी। मुझे लड़की पसंद है। हालांकि, अभी मैं उसके परिवार के बारे में कुछ भी नहीं जानता। अलबत्ता मैंने उसे देखा कई बार है, कॉलेज जाते हुए। कॉलेज से लौटते हुए। इतना जरूर पता है कि वह एमए अंग्रेजी अंतिम वर्ष में पढ़ रही है। लेकिन, अभी यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि वह मुझसे शादी करेगी भी या नहीं। उसने कहा है कि शीघ्र जवाब दे दूंगी। खैर! बाकी खुदा की मर्जी...।

That first meeting

It was 21 years ago, on the 8th of June, when I met Rajni for the first time.  Then I used to be a reporter in Amar Ujala.  According to the family members, the age was passing, so they did not want to delay my marriage any more.  I had also decided that now I will not argue with the family members in this matter.  Aunty had found this relationship for me.  Incidentally, I had already seen Rajni.  But, the family members decided that on June 8, they had to go to see the girl.  For this the morning was fixed.

We reached Rajni's house on June 8 around 10 am.  My sister said on seeing her - "You will become my sister-in-law".  But, I was not in a position to say anything without his wish.  So, I expressed my desire to talk to Rajni.  We talked for five to seven minutes.  I told him clearly that I just  The money is worth passing.  Yes!  The situation is sure to improve in the coming times.  She did not say anything.  After that we went back.  It was raining that day, so I had an umbrella.  So, I went straight to the office.

This is the time when there was a job seven days a week.  Meanwhile, I had completed my BJMC (Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication) degree from Birla Campus of Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University.  Now it was decided that I had to make a career in journalism.  So even less money used to give me satisfaction.  Luckily then I had mastered the news writing and news editing.  Bus!  Now the idea was to find the way to Delhi, Meerut or Dehradun.  Due to its proximity to Kotdwar, Dehradun was my priority.  But for the time being it was to be married and it was up to Rajni's "yes".

Today I am stopping this story right here.  What happened next, whether Rajni said "yes" or "no", I will give information about it in the next installments.  Yes!  One thing that I want to tell you is that that day, apart from my younger sister, my father, aunt and Dwarka brother had gone to Rajni's house with me.  Dwarka Bhai is the eldest son of my aunt.  However!  As always, it's night enough and it's time for me to sleep.  I know that you are also bearing me right now.  So, goodnight with apologies!!

And yes!  Before sleeping I wrote in my diary – 8th June 2000.  Today for the first time I went to see a girl, for the purpose of marriage.  And also being serious.  I like the girl.  However, right now I don't know anything about his family.  Although I have seen him many times, while going to college.  Returning from college.  What is definitely known is that she is studying in the final year of MA English.  But, it is not clear yet whether she will marry me or not.  She has said that she will reply soon.  well!  The rest is God's will.
