छह गते आषाढ़ को मेरा अवतरण हुआ था। इस तिथि को अंग्रेजी माह जून की 20 तारीख पड़ती है। हालांकि, मेरे जन्म के समय सुबह के साढे़ चार बजे रहे होंगे, इसलिए दस्तावेजों में मेरी जन्मतिथि 21 जून दर्ज है। दरअसल, अंग्रेजी तारीख मध्यरात्रि में बारह बजे बदल जाती है, जबकि भारतीय परंपरा में नए दिन की शुरुआत सूर्योदय से होती है। मेरा जन्म सूर्योदय से पहले का है। इस लिहाज से दोनों तिथियों को मेरा जन्मदिन मनाया मनाया जाता है। कहने का मतलब आज आषाढ़ की छह गते है और घर में मेरा जन्मदिन मनाया जा रहा है।
सुबह जैसे ही मेरी नींद खुली, आदतानुसार सीधे मोबाइल पर दृष्टिपात किया। देखा कि वाट्सएप में दो शुभकामना संदेश पडे़ हुए हैं। एक रजनी का है और दूसरा बडी़ बिटिया सृष्टि का। मैंने जवाब में धन्यवाद! लिखा और फिर दैनिक कार्यों में जुट गया। दोपहर 12 बजे के आसपास जब मैं भोजन बना रहा था, तभी रजनी का फोन आया। उस वक्त वह अपने मायके यानी मेरे ससुराल में थी। दरअसल गर्मियों की छुट्टियां होने के कारण इन दिनों दोनों सालियां भी मायके आई हुई हैं। दो-एक दिन में रजनी भी चली जाएगी। आज तो वह मेरे जन्मदिन की खुशी में पकौडि़यां लेकर गई थी।
फोन पर बधाई देने के साथ रजनी बोली- "मुझे तो ये जानकारी थी कि आपका जन्मदिन कल है। वह तो सासजी पकौडी़ बना रही थीं, तब मालूम पडा़ कि आज ही है। उनका कहना था कि हमारे महीने के हिसाब से आपका जन्मदिन 20 जून को ही पड़ता है। 21 जून तो स्कूल के हिसाब से होता है। मैंने तब बनाई पकौडि़यां।"
"छह गते आषाढ़ भी सही है और 21 जून भी। मेरा जन्म सूर्योदय से पहले ब्रह्ममुहूर्त में हुआ। तब छह गते ही थी, लेकिन अंग्रेजी कैलेंडर के हिसाब से 21 तारीख शुरू हो चुकी थी। इसलिए जन्मदिन दोनों में से किसी भी दिन मनाओ, कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता"- मैंने कहा।
अब बात रजनी की समझ में भी आ गई। खैर! मेरे सास-ससुर रजनी के पास ही बैठे थे, इसलिए उन्होंने भी मुझे जन्मदिन की शुभकामनाएं दीं। इसके बाद बारी थी मेरी बडी़ साली सुनीता की। वो लगभग हर साल ही विश करती है। संयोग से छोटी साली लक्ष्मी भी वहीं मौजूद थी, सो उसने भी विश किया। मेरे लिए यह भी एक सुखद एहसास था। मुझे याद नहीं कि आखिरी बार उसने कब मेरे जन्मदिन पर विश किया था। दस-बारह साल तो हो ही गए होंगे। पता नहीं आज सूरज किधर से निकला, मैं स्वयं चकित हूं।
इसके बाद फिर रजनी से ही कुछ देर बात हुई। पूछने लगी क्या खास पका रहे हो। मैंने कहा- "क्या खास पकाना है, मेरे लिए तो जो पक जाए, वही खास है। अच्छे स्वास्थ्य के लिए आज लौकी की सब्जी और रोटी सेलिब्रेट करूंगा।" ऐसा ही मैंने किया भी।
पराये शहर में और वह भी अकेले, इससे बेहतर कुछ हो भी नहीं सकता। खैर! जन्मदिन अभी जारी रहेगा। पूरे 24 घंटे हैं अभी सेलिब्रेट करने के लिए। रात के एक बज चुके और फेसबुक पर शुभकामना संदेश आने लगे हैं। लेकिन, सच कहूं तो मुझे अब नींद आ रही है। डायरी लिखते-लिखते नींद के कई झोंके आ चुके हैं। इसलिए फिलहाल आपसे इजाज़त चाहता हूं। कल फिर मिलेंगे। शुभरात्रि!!

My incarnation took place on the 6th of Ashada. This date falls on the 20th of the English month of June. However, the time of my birth must have been 4:30 in the morning, so my date of birth is recorded as June 21 in the documents. Actually, the English date changes at 12 midnight, whereas in Indian tradition the new day begins at sunrise. I was born before sunrise. In this sense, my birthday is celebrated on both the dates. It means to say that today is the six days of Ashadh and my birthday is being celebrated in the house.
As soon as I woke up in the morning, I looked directly at my mobile as per the habit. Saw that there are two greeting messages lying in WhatsApp. One is of Rajni and the other is of elder daughter Srishti. Thanks in reply! Wrote and then got involved in daily work. Around 12 noon, while I was cooking, Rajni's call came. At that time she was in her maternal house i.e. my in-laws' house. Actually, due to the summer holidays, these days both the daughters-in-law have also come to their maternal home. Rajni will also be gone in a day or two. Today she took dumplings to celebrate my birthday.
With congratulatory on the phone, Rajni said - "I knew that your birthday is tomorrow. She was cooking pakodi, then she came to know that it is today. She said that according to our month, your birthday is June 20. It is only on June 21. It is according to the school. I made dumplings then."
"Six gates Ashadha is also correct and 21st June also. I was born in Brahmamuhurta before sunrise. Then there were six gates, but according to the English calendar, the 21st had started. So celebrate the birthday on either of the two days, Doesn't matter"- I said.
Now Rajni's point is also understood. Well! My father-in-law was sitting next to Rajni, so he also wished me a happy birthday. After this it was my elder sister-in-law Sunita's turn. She prays almost every year. Incidentally, the younger sister-in-law Lakshmi was also present there, so she also wished. It was also a pleasant feeling for me. I can't remember the last time he wished me on my birthday. Ten or twelve years must have passed. I don't know where the sun came out today, I myself am amazed.
After this again talked to Rajni for some time. Started asking what special you are cooking. I said- "What is special to cook, what is cooked for me is special. Today I will celebrate gourd vegetable and roti for good health." That's what I did too.
In a foreign city and that too alone, nothing can be better than this. Well! Birthday continues. There are 24 hours to celebrate now. It is past one o'clock in the night and wishes have started pouring in on Facebook. But, to be honest, I am sleeping now. While writing the diary, there have been many bouts of sleep. That's why I want your permission for now. We will meet tomorrow again. good night!!
