समय के साथ दुनिया में पर्यटन के तौर-तरीके भी बदल रहे हैं और लोग नए-नए अंदाज में पर्यटन का आनंद लेने लगे हैं। एस्ट्रो टूरिज्म पर्यटन का एक ऐसा ही अंदाज है। इसके लिए आपको शहरों की चकाचौंध छोड़कर पहाड़ों की गोद में उन स्थानों का रुख करना होगा, जहां से आसमान में टिमटिमाते सितारों को आसानी से निहारा जा सकता है। ...तो चलिये! आपको लिये चलते हैं उत्तराखंड के चमोली जिले में समुद्रतल से 8,200 फीट की ऊंचाई पर स्थित उत्तर भारत के पहले ‘एस्ट्रो विलेज’ बेनीताल की सैर पर। 

गैरसैंण ब्लाक के आदि बदरी क्षेत्र में बुग्याली (मखमली घास का मैदान) और हरी-भरी ढलवां पहाड़ियों के बीच पड़ने वाले बेनीताल को देखकर लगता है, जैसे प्रकृति ने इस स्थल को फुर्सत के क्षणों में संवारा हो। वर्षाकाल में तो इसकी सुंदरता द्विगुणित हो जाती है। चारों ओर पसरी कोहरे और हरी मखमली घास की चादर ऐसे प्रतीत होती है, मानो किसी चित्रकार ने कैनवास पर रंगों से एक खूबसूरत चित्र उकेरा हुआ हो। यहां के शांत एवं सुरम्य वातावरण में गाय, बैल व बकरियों के गले में बंधी घंटियों की आवाज वातावरण में चल रही शीतल बयार के स्पर्श से हृदयस्पर्शी संगीत ध्वनि उत्पन्न करती है।

बेनीताल की चमोली जिले मुख्यालय गोपेश्वर से दूरी 72 किमी है। यहां पहुंचने के लिए बदरीनाथ हाइवे पर कर्णप्रयाग से सिमली होते हुए 32 किमी की दूरी तय करनी पड़ती है। न्यूनतम मानवीय गतिविधियां और प्रकाश का कम प्रदूषण बेनीताल को ‘डार्क स्काई पार्क’ के लिए एक आदर्श स्थल बनाता है, जो पर्यटकों को रात में आसमानी जादू की दिव्य अनुभूति कराता है। बेनीताल का एक और आकर्षण है यहां बेनी पर्वत पर ढलवा क्षेत्र में स्थित ताल, जो वर्षाकाल में पानी से लबालब रहता है। सड़क से महज सौ मीटर की दूरी पर स्थित इस ताल की लंबाई 320 मीटर और चौड़ाई 150 मीटर है।

पर्यटन विभाग की ओर से अब बेनीताल को एस्ट्रो विलेज के रूप में विकसित किया जा रहा है। धीरे-धीरे यहां टेलीस्कोप समेत अन्य उपकरण लगाने की भी तैयारी है, ताकि पर्यटक और खगोल प्रेमी आसानी से ग्रह, तारे व आकाश गंगा का अवलोकन कर सकें। इसी कड़ी में यहां समय-समय पर एस्ट्रो पार्टी, एस्ट्रो कैंप व एस्ट्रो वीक भी आयोजित किए जाते हैं। इहमें हिस्सा लेने उत्तराखंड के अलावा दिल्ली, उत्तर प्रदेश, राजस्थान, आंध्र प्रदेश, असोम आदि राज्यों से खगोलविद अत्याधुनिक मशीनों के साथ यहां पहुंचते हैं। 

इसलिए एस्ट्रो विलेज है बेनीताल

एस्ट्रो विलेज से तात्पर्य ऐसे स्थान से है, जहां पर वायु प्रदूषण (प्रकाश प्रदूषण) बहुत कम हो और आसमान एकदम खुला-खुला एवं साफ नजर आता हो। इस जगह से हम तारों, ग्रहों और चांद को खुली आंखों से भी बिल्कुल स्पष्ट देख सकते हैं। साथ ही एस्ट्रो फोटोग्राफी, सौर अवलोकन, नक्षत्र दर्शन, स्टार गेजिंग इत्यादि कार्यक्रमों का आयोजन कर सकते हैं। गढ़वाल हिमालय में बेनीताल ऐसी जगह है, जहां से आसमान एकदम साफ और स्पष्ट दिखाई देता है। वहीं, एस्ट्रो टूरिज्म खगोल विज्ञान पर आधारित है। इसके तहत पर्यटकों को खगोल पिंड और तारों का अवलोकन कराया जाता है। इसका उद्देश्य युवाओं में खगोल विज्ञान के प्रति रुचि जगाना भी है।

ठहरने को होम स्टे, खाने को पहाड़ी व्यंजन

बेनीताल में पर्यटन व खगोल पर्यटन की संभावनाओं को देखते हुए सड़क से लगे गांव बणगांव, ऐरवाड़ी, रतूड़ा, सिमतोली, चूलाकोट व मठकोट में कई होम स्टे खुल गए हैं। यहां पर्यटक बेहतरीन स्थानीय व्यंजनों का जायका लेने के साथ पहाड़ की भाषा-बोली, रहन-सहन और संस्कृति से भी परिचित हो सकते हैं। कर्णप्रयाग में भी होम स्टे, लॉज और होटल उपलब्ध हैं। बेनीताल में भी वर्तमान में दो होम स्टे खुल चुके हैं, लेकिन आप चाहें तो अपना टेंट लगाकर भी रात गुजार सकते हैं।

पर्यटकों की सुख-सुविधाओं का रखा जा रहा ख्याल

बढ़ते वायु प्रदूषण के चलते देश में ऐसे बहुत ही कम स्थान बचे हैं, जहां से खुला एवं स्पष्ट आसमान देखा जा सकता है। बेनीताल ऐसा ही स्थान है, जो चारों ओर से ऊंचे-ऊंचे पहाड़, जंगल, बुग्याल और शांत वातावरण से घिरा है। पर्यटन विभाग की ओर से बेनीताल को एस्ट्रो विलेज के रूप में विकसित करने के लिए यहां समय-समय पर खगोलीय कार्यक्रम आयोजित किए जाते हैं। साथ ही पर्यटकों की सुविधा के लिए पार्किंग, पैदल रास्तों व हटों का निर्माण किया जा रहा है। कोशिश यही है कि एस्ट्रो टूरिज्म से आजीविका के ज्यादा से ज्यादा स्रोत विकसित हों।

बेनीताल की सैर का उत्तम समय

वैसे तो बेनीताल आप वर्षभर कभी भी जा सकते हैं, लेकिन अक्टूबर से जून के बीच का समय सबसे उत्तम माना जाता है। मानसून सीजन के दौरान भूस्खलन, भूधंसाव व पहाड़ी से मलबा-पत्थर गिरने का खतरा निरंतर बना रहा है। यह न भूलें की बेनीताल एक ठंडा स्थान है, इसलिए गर्म कपड़े साथ जरूर लेकर आएं।

ऐसे पहुंचें बेनीताल

यहां पहुंचने के लिए पहले ऋषिकेश से श्रीनगर होते हुए कर्णप्रयाग तक 172 किमी की दूरी तय करनी पड़ती है। यहां से महज 32 किमी की दूरी पर बेनीताल है। आप निजी या सार्वजनिक वाहन से यहां पहुंच सकते हैं। ऋषिकेश-हरिद्वार तक रेल सुविधा भी उपलब्ध है। अब तो गौचर तक देहरादून के सहस्रधारा हेलीपैड से हेलीकॉप्टर सेवा भी उपलब्ध है।

Over time, global tourism practices are changing, and people are beginning to enjoy new ways of traveling. Astrotourism is one such form of tourism. For this, you need to leave the hustle and bustle of cities and head to those places in the lap of the mountains, where you can easily gaze at the twinkling stars in the sky. ...So, let's take you on a trip to Bainital, North India's first 'Astro Village', located at an altitude of 8,200 feet above sea level in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.

Situated between Bugyals (velvety meadows) and lush, rolling hills in the Adi Badri region of the Gairsain block, Bainital seems as if nature has created this place in its leisure time. Its beauty is further enhanced during the rainy season.  The blanket of fog and velvety green grass surrounding the area appears as if an artist has painted a beautiful picture on canvas. In the serene and picturesque surroundings, the sound of bells tied around the necks of cows, bulls, and goats, combined with the cool breeze, creates a heart-warming musical sound.

Bainital is 72 km from Gopeshwar, the district headquarters of Chamoli. To reach here, one has to travel 32 km from Karnaprayag via Simli on the Badrinath Highway. Minimal human activity and low light pollution make Benital an ideal location for a 'Dark Sky Park,' offering tourists a divine experience of the celestial magic at night. Another attraction of Bainital is the lake located on the slopes of Beni Mountain, which brims with water during the rainy season. Located just a hundred meters from the road, this lake is 320 meters long and 150 meters wide.

The Tourism Department is now developing Bainital as an Astro Village. Plans are underway to gradually install telescopes and other equipment here, so that tourists and astronomy enthusiasts can easily observe planets, stars, and the Milky Way. Astro Parties, Astro Camps, and Astro Weeks are also organized here from time to time. Astronomers from Uttarakhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and Assam, among other states, arrive here with state-of-the-art equipment to participate.

That'sWhy Bainital Is an Astro Village

Astro Village refers to a place where air pollution (light pollution) is minimal and the sky is completely open and clear. From here, we can clearly see the stars, planets, and moon with the naked eye. Programs like astro photography, solar observation, constellation viewing, stargazing, and more can be organized. Bainital, in the Garhwal Himalayas, offers a clear and crisp view of the sky. Astrotourism, on the other hand, is based on astronomy.  Under this program, tourists are allowed to observe celestial bodies and stars. Its aim is also to foster interest in astronomy among young people.

Homestays for Accommodation, Mountain Cuisine for Dining

In light of the potential for tourism and astronomy in Bainital, several homestays have opened in the roadside villages of Bangaon, Airwadi, Ratuda, Simatoli, Chulakot, and Mathkot. Here, tourists can sample the delicious local cuisine and become familiar with the mountain language, lifestyle, and culture. Homestays, lodges, and hotels are also available in Karnaprayag. Currently, two homestays have opened in Bainital, but you can also set up your own tent and spend the night there.

Due to increasing air pollution, there are very few places left in the country where one can view the open and clear sky. Bainital is one such place, surrounded by high mountains, forests, meadows, and a serene environment. The Tourism Department periodically organizes astronomical events to develop Bainital as an Astro Village. Parking, walking paths, and huts are also being constructed for the convenience of tourists. The effort is to develop as many livelihood sources as possible through astrotourism.

Best Time to Visit Bainital

Although you can visit Bainital any time of the year, the best time is between October and June. During the monsoon season, there is a constant threat of landslides, subsidence, and falling debris from the hills. Remember, Bainital is a cold place, so be sure to bring warm clothing. 

How to Reach Bainital

To reach Bainital, you first need to travel 172 km from Rishikesh via Srinagar to Karnaprayag. Bainital is just 32 km from here. You can reach it by private or public transport. Rail service is also available between Rishikesh and Haridwar. Now, helicopter service is also available from Dehradun's Sahasradhara helipad to Gauchar.
