विज्ञान बनाम पाखंड

देहरादून, जहां दो दर्जन से अधिक वैज्ञानिक अनुसंधान संस्थान हैं, जहां हजारों वैज्ञानिक शोध कार्य में जुटे हुए हैं, जहां शिक्षा का स्तर देशभर में सबसे ऊंचा माना जाता है, वहां अगर 30-35 हजार लोग पाखंड को शीश नवाने के लिए एक जगह जुटते हों तो यकीन जानिए न इस शहर का कुछ भला हो सकता है, न इस देश का ही। आखिर कहां जा रहा है स्वयं को आधुनिक और तकनीक से लैस कहलाने वाला ये शहर। क्या यही इसकी नियति है? यदि इसका जवाब ना में है तो माफ कीजिये इससे बड़ी बदनसीबी और कुछ नहीं हो सकती।

मुझे इस शहर में रहते हुए 17 वर्ष बीत चुके हैं, लेकिन कभी लगा नहीं कि एक आधुनिक शहर में रह रहा हूं। शायद इसी वजह से आज तक मैं इस शहर में बसने का मन नहीं बना पाया और लगता नहीं कि आगे भी ऐसा संभव हो पाएगा। दरअसल, मेरी सोच ने इस शहर से कभी मेल नहीं खाया। कारण, इस शहर के अधिकांश लोग जमीन पर कम और आसमान पर ज्यादा नज़र आते हैं। इसके विपरीत जब मैं इस शहर में मौजूद वैज्ञानिक संस्थानों को देखता हूं, मुझे वहां जाने और वैज्ञानिकों से रूबरू होने का मौका मिलता है, तो गर्व की ऐसी अनुभूति होती है, जिसे शब्दों में बयां नहीं किया जा सकता। सोचता हूं, जिन्होंने इन्हें बनवाया, समाज के प्रति उनका कितना स्पष्ट नज़रिया रहा होगा। उन्होंने ज़रूर देश के उज्जवल भविष्य का सपना देखा होगा। लेकिन, अब हासिल देखकर खुद पर भी अफ़सोस होने लगता है।

इस शहर में भारतीय वन अनुसंधान संस्थान, वाडिया हिमालय भू-विज्ञान संस्थान, इंडियन इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ पेट्रोलियम, ओएनजीसी, सर्वे ऑफ इंडिया, वाइल्ड लाइफ इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ इंडिया, जियोलॉजिकल सर्वे ऑफ इंडिया, आर्कियोलॉजिकल सर्वे ऑफ इंडिया, मौसम विज्ञान केंद्र जैसे तमाम राष्ट्रीय-अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय स्तर के वैज्ञानिक संस्थान हैं। इनमें हर साल हजारों युवा देश-विदेश से शोध करने के लिए पहुंचते हैं। लेकिन, अफ़सोस! देहरादून की बड़ी आबादी ठीक से इन संस्थानों के बारे में जानती तक नहीं। एफआरआई घूमने तो देश- विदेश से पर्यटक भी बड़ी तादाद में पहुंचते हैं। लेकिन, स्थानीय लोग सिर्फ इतना ही जानते हैं कि एफआरआई का खूबसूरत परिसर और  हेरिटेज बिल्डिंग है। इस बिल्डिंग के आगे एक सेल्फी तो होनी ही चाहिए। इससे ज्यादा कुछ नहीं।

मैं दावे के साथ कह सकता हूँ कि एफआरआई के अंदर क्या होता है, यह जानकारी बहुत कम लोगों को है। एफआरआई के म्यूज़ियम को भी कम ही लोगों ने देखा होगा। लेकिन, संस्थान में क्या नए शोध चल रहे हैं, अब तक कौन-कौन से महत्वपूर्ण शोध वहां हो चुके हैं, यह जानकारी रखने वाले इस आधुनिक कहलाने वाले शहर में गिनती के हैं। बाकी संस्थानों की तो लोगों ने देहरी भी नहीं लांघी है। जबकि, बातें सुनिए तो लगता है कि इनसे बड़ा जानकार कोई है ही नहीं। इस मामले में मैं स्वयं को भाग्यशाली समझता हूं कि मुझे इन संस्थानों के बारे में न केवल जानकारी है, बल्कि मैं इनकी अहमियत भी समझता हूं।

हालांकि, होना तो यह चाहिए था कि इस शहर के लोगों की दृष्टि में भी इन वैज्ञानिक संस्थानों की झलक नज़र आती, लेकिन यहां तो आंखों पर पट्टी बंधी हुई है। कभी-कभी मैं सोचता हूं कि क्या फायदा ऐसी शिक्षा का, जो हमें अंधे कुएं की ओर ले जाती है। जो विज्ञान से ऊपर तथाकथित चमत्कारों को मानती है, जो यह समझने की शक्ति भी क्षीण कर देती है कि जिन्हें हम चमत्कार समझते हैं, उनके पीछे भी विज्ञान ही है। पर, यह उन्हें कौन समझाए, जिनके लिए ढोंग-पाखंड और कथित दिव्य दरबार ही सब-कुछ हैं। जो कर्म में नहीं, पाखंडियों पर विश्वास करते हैं। यही तो हो रहा, अपने इस आगे बढ़े शहर में।

अब देखिए, बीते चार नवंबर को अस्थायी राजधानी देहरादून के परेड मैदान में स्वयं का भगवान से संपर्क होने का दावा करने वाले एक बाबा का कथित दिव्य दरबार सजा, जिसमें मंत्रियों से लेकर अफ़सर तक लोटते नज़र आए। हैरत तो तब हुई, जब पता चला कि 35 हजार लोग बाबा के दर्शन को पहुंचे हैं। सारे काम-काज छोड़कर। शहर को नर्क बनाकर। एक बात तो मेरी समझ में आ गई है कि इसके पीछे कोई-न-कोई सोच जरूर काम कर रही है। यह वही सोच है, जो देश में लोगों को सुशिक्षित नहीं देखना चाहती। विज्ञान की प्रगति उसे पसंद नहीं। उसे वोटर चाहिए, सजग नागरिक नहीं। मैं अगर सही हूं तो यकीनन यह बेहद खतरनाक स्थिति है।

Science vs hypocrisy

In Dehradun, where there are more than two dozen scientific research institutes, where thousands of scientists are engaged in research work, where the level of education is considered to be the highest in the country, then if 30-35 thousand people had gathered at one place to expose the hypocrisy.  If yes then rest assured that neither this city nor this country can get any good.  After all, where is this city going which calls itself modern and equipped with technology?  Is this its destiny?  If the answer to this is no then please forgive me, nothing can be worse than this.

I have been living in this city for 17 years, but I never felt that I was living in a modern city.  Perhaps this is the reason why till date I have not been able to make up my mind to settle in this city and I do not think that this will be possible in future also.  Actually, my thinking never matched with this city.  Because, the people of this city are seen less on the ground and more in the sky.  On the contrary, when I see the scientific institutions present in this city, I get a chance to go there and meet scientists, I feel a feeling of pride which cannot be expressed in words.  I wonder who built these, how clear their vision must have been towards the society.  He must have dreamed of a bright future for the country.  But now, seeing what has been achieved, I start feeling sorry for myself.

In this city, many national and international institutions like Indian Forest Research Institute, Wadia Himalayan Institute of Geology, Indian Institute of Petroleum, ONGC, Survey of India, Wildlife Institute of India, Geological Survey of India, Archaeological Survey of India, Meteorological Center etc. are situated in this city.  level scientific institutions.  Every year thousands of youth from India and abroad come here to do research.  But, alas!  A large population of Dehradun does not even know properly about these institutions.  A large number of tourists from India and abroad also come to visit FRI.  But, the local people only know that FRI has a beautiful campus and heritage buildings.  There must be a selfie in front of this building.  Nothing more than that.

I can say with certainty that very few people know what happens inside FRI.  Very few people would have seen the FRI museum.  But, those who have information about what new research is going on in the institute and what important research has been done there till now, are counted in this so-called modern city.  People have not even crossed the threshold of other institutions.  Whereas, if you listen to things, it seems that there is no one more knowledgeable than him.  In this matter, I consider myself fortunate that I not only know about these institutions, but I also understand their importance.

However, what should have happened is that the glimpse of these scientific institutions should have been visible in the eyes of the people of this city, but here the eyes are blindfolded.  Sometimes I wonder what is the use of such education, which leads us towards a blind well.  Which considers so-called miracles above science, which also weakens the power to understand that there is science behind even those things which we consider miracles.  But, who will explain this to those for whom hypocrisy and the so-called divine court are everything.  Those who believe in hypocrites and not in deeds.  This is what is happening in this progressive city of ours.

 Now see, on November 4, at the parade grounds of the temporary capital Dehradun, the alleged divine court of a Baba who claimed to have contact with God was held, in which everyone from ministers to officers were seen dancing.  I was surprised when I came to know that 35 thousand people had come to see Baba.  Leaving all work.  By making the city hell.  One thing I have understood is that some thinking is definitely working behind this.  This is the same thinking which does not want to see people in the country well educated.  He does not like the progress of science.  He wants voters, not conscious citizens.  If I am right then this is definitely a very dangerous situation.
