गुजरा दौर भले ही लौटकर न आए, लेकिन उस दौर की स्मृतियां आज भी तन-मन को प्रफुल्लित कर देती हैं। तब सिनेमा व सर्कस ही मनोरंजन का प्रमुख साधन हुआ करते थे। टेलीविजन तक चंद लोगों की ही पहुंच थी। हां! यदा-कदा पैसे इकट्ठा कर वीसीआर या वीसीपी पर एक के बाद एक दो-तीन फिल्म जरूर देख ली जाती थी। लेकिन, सिनेमा हाल जैसा मजा वीसीआर-वीसीपी में कहां हो सकता था। सो, हमारी यथासंभव कोशिश सिनेमा हाल में ही फिल्म देखने की होती थी। मैंने तब 11वीं कक्षा में दाखिला लिया था। कालेज में हमारी एक अलग तरह की मित्रमंडली हुआ करती थी। उस मंडली में हम छह-सात दोस्त थे। सभी सामान्य परिवारों से। इसलिए जेब पर कड़की ही रहती थी। साग-सब्जी में से जो चवन्नी-अठन्नी बच जाती, वही हमारी पाकेट मनी हुआ करती थी। बहुत कम खर्चे पर परिवार चलता था, इसलिए घर से एक रुपया मांगने का भी साहस नहीं होता था। फिर भी हम खुश एवं प्रसन्नचित्त रहते थे।

फिल्में देखने का शौक हम सभी को था, लेकिन जेब खाली रहने के कारण यह शौक पूरा नहीं हो पाता था। हालांकि, सिनेमा का न्यूनतम टिकट तब पौने दो या दो रुपये का होता था। मध्यांतर में दो रुपये मूंगफली पर खर्च हो जाते। यानी चार रुपये में फिल्म का पूरा मजा मिल जाता था। लेकिन, बहुत कम मौकों पर ही हमारी जेब में यह रकम होती थी। ऐसे में संभव नहीं था का सब एक साथ सिनेमा देख सकें। सो, इसका हमने नायाब तोड़ निकाल लिया था। हमारा एक साथी फिल्मों का इनसाक्लोपीडिया हुआ करता था। जितनी भी फिल्में उसने देखी होंगी, सबकी स्टोरी उसे दृश्यवार याद थी। गानों से लेकर छोटे-छोटे दृश्य तक उसे डायलाग सहित याद रहते थे। इसलिए हमने तय किया कि सबके बदले उसी को क्यों न फिल्म देखने भेजा जाए। बस! शर्त यह थी कि अगले दिन वह हमें फिल्म की पूरी स्टोरी सुनाएगा। यदा-कदा पैसा होने पर दो साथी भी फिल्म देखने चले जाया करते थे।

हां! याद आया, हमारे उस दोस्त का नाम महावीर था। हम सभी दोस्त आपस में चार रुपये जुटाकर उसे देते और वह  चौथे पीरियड (कभी-कभी तीसरे) में सिनेमा हाल के लिए रवाना हो जाता। अमूमन वह दूसरा शो देखता था, क्योंकि टिकट के लिए खिड़की पर भी काफी संघर्ष करना पड़ता था। सिनेमा हाल में दर्शकों का रेला उमड़ता था, इसलिए खिड़की से सफलतापूर्वक टिकट खरीद लेना, ओलंपिक में पदक जीतने जैसा चुनौतीपूर्ण कार्य होता था। महावीर को इसमें महारथ हासिल थी। वह जैसे-तैसे टिकट का जुगाड़ कर ही लेता था, वह भी वास्तविक कीमत पर। उस दौर में में टिकटों की बडे़ पैमाने पर ब्लैकमेलिंग होती थी, इसलिए सीधे-सादे लोग तो फिल्म देखे बगैर ही वापस लौट आते थे।

नियमित दर्शक होने के कारण महावीर की सिनेमा हाल कर्मियों और टिकट दलालों से अच्छी पहचान हो गई थी। इसलिए उसे टिकट वास्तविक मूल्य पर ही मिल जाता था। महावीर अमूमन पहली या दूसरी पांत में बैठकर फिल्म देखता था। क्योंकि दो रुपये में आगे का टिकट ही मिलता था। हालांकि, छठे-चौमासे में उसे बालकनी के टिकट पर फिल्म देखने का सौभाग्य भी मिल जाता था। जब ऐसा मौका आता, उसका चेहरा खिल उठता था। हमें भी इससे बडी़ खुशी मिलती। खैर! महावीर के सिनेमा हाल पहुंचने के बाद हम बेसब्री से उसके लौटने का इंतजार करने लगते। अगर अगले दिन इतवार पड़ रहा होता तो यह इंतजार और बढ़ जाता। इतना ही नहीं, हम बारी-बारी से उस दिन का क्लासवर्क करने में भी महावीर की मदद करते, जिस दिन उसे फिल्म देखने के चलते गैरहाजिर रहना पड़ता।

अगले दिन जब महावीर कालेज आता तो हम खाली पीरियड और इंटरवल में उसे घेरकर बैठे जाते। बिल्कुल कथा सुनने वाले अंदाज में धीर-गंभीर होकर। जैसे ही महावीर स्टोरी सुनाना शुरू करता, हमारी धड़कनें तेज हो जाती। वह अपने हाव-भाव और सुनाने के अंदाज से ऐसे-ऐसे सीन क्रियेट करता कि हम भौचक रह जाते। ऐसा प्रतीत होता, जैसे सब-कुछ हमारे सामने ही घट रहा है। हर पात्र हमारी आंखों में तैरने लगता। गानों के दृश्य भी वह इस तरह साकार करता कि हम क्लास रूम की कुर्सियों पर बैठे-बैठे अंतर्मन से सिनेमा हाल में पहुंच जाते। जैसे-जैसे स्टोरी आगे बढ़ती, हमारा कौतुहल भी बढ़ता जाता। यह देख क्लाम रूम में बैठे अन्य साथी भी हमारे इर्द-गिर्द जमा हो जाते। सबकी निगाहें महावीर के चेहरे पर होती। समय की पाबंदी के चलते कभी-कभी उसे स्टोरी थोडा़ शार्ट भी करनी पड़ती। फिर भी अगले पीरियड की घंटी बजने के कारण अगर स्टोरी शेष रह जाती तो महावीर उसे छुट्टी होने पर कम्पलीट करता। इससे हमें घर लौटने में विलंब भी हो जाता, पर तब कौन इसकी परवाह करता था। हम घर पहुंचकर कोई न कोई बहाना बना लेते।

खैर! पूरे दो साल हमने महावीर से फिल्मों का लाइव प्रसारण सुना। 12वीं में आने के बाद तो एकाध बार मैं भी कालेज से बंक मारकर फिल्म देखने गया। लेकिन, मुझमें महावीर की तरह फिल्म का लाइव प्रसारण सुनाने की क्वालिटी कभी विकसित नहीं हो पाई। हां! लगातार फिल्म देखने का एक नुकसान जरूर हुआ कि महावीर पढा़ई के प्रति लापरवाह होता चला गया और 12वीं में फेल हो गया। इसका अफसोस मुझे आज भी है कि हमारा एक साथी अपनी व हमारी नादानियों के कारण पढा़ई में पीछे छूट गया। मुझे इतना याद है कि दोबारा इंटर में प्रवेश लेने के बाद महावीर मुझसे मिला था। उससे मुझसे मेरी एकाउंटेंसी की नोट बुक और टेक्स्ट बुक मांगी थी। ताकि पढा़ई में आसानी रहे। इसके बाद दोबार कभी उससे मेरी मुलाकात नहीं हुई। सोशल प्लेटफार्म पर भी नहीं।

The past era may not come back, but the memories of that era still make the body and mind happy.  Then cinema and circus used to be the main means of entertainment.  Only a few people had access to television.  Yes!  Sometimes two-three movies were watched one after the other on VCR or VCP after collecting money.  But, where could be the fun like cinema hall in VCR-VCP.  So, as far as possible we tried to watch the film in the cinema hall itself.  I had enrolled in 11th standard then.  We used to have a different kind of friendship circle in college.  We were six-seven friends in that circle.  All from normal families.  That's why the pocket remained tight.  Whatever was left out of the vegetables used to be our pocket money.  The family used to run on very little expenditure, so did not have the courage to ask even a single rupee from the house.  Still we were happy and cheerful.

We all were fond of watching movies, but due to empty pockets, this hobby could not be fulfilled.  However, the minimum ticket to the cinema was then two and a quarter to two rupees.  In the interval, two rupees would have been spent on peanuts.  That is, for four rupees one could get full enjoyment of the film.  But, on very rare occasions, we used to have this amount in our pocket.  In such a situation, it was not possible that everyone could watch the movie together.  So, we had pulled out the best of it.  One of our friends used to be an encyclopedia of films.  All the films he had seen, he remembered the story scene by scene.  From songs to small scenes, he used to remember them along with the dialogues.  So we decided that why not send him to watch the film instead of everyone else.  Bus!  The condition was that the next day he would tell us the full story of the film.  Sometimes, when there was money, two companions also used to go to watch movies.

Yes!  I remembered, the name of that friend of ours was Mahavir.  All of us friends would pool together four rupees and give it to him and he would leave for the cinema hall in the fourth period (sometimes third).  Usually he would watch the second show, as there was a lot of fighting at the window for tickets.  Cinema halls were packed with visitors, so successfully buying tickets from the window was a challenging task, like winning a medal in the Olympics.  Mahavir had mastered it.  He somehow managed to get tickets, that too at the actual price.  In those days blackmailing of tickets was rampant, so simple people used to return without watching the film.

Being a regular viewer, Mahavir had become well known to cinema hall workers and ticket brokers.  That's why he used to get the ticket at the actual price only.  Mahavir usually watched movies sitting in the first or second row.  Because only forward ticket was available for two rupees.  However, in the sixth-fourth he used to get the privilege of watching a movie on a balcony ticket.  When such an opportunity came, his face would light up.  We would also get a lot of happiness from this.  So!  After Mahavir reached the cinema hall, we eagerly waited for his return.  Had it been a Sunday the next day, the wait would have been longer.  Not only this, we would also take it in turns to help Mahaveer in doing his classwork on the day he would be absent due to watching the film.

The next day when Mahavir came to college, we used to sit around him during the free period and interval.  Being patient and serious, in the style of listening to the story.  As soon as Mahavir started narrating the story, our heart beat faster.  He used to create such scenes with his gestures and style of narrating that we used to be stunned.  It appears as if everything is happening right in front of us.  Every character floats in our eyes.  He would make the scenes of the songs come true in such a way that we would have reached the cinema hall sitting on the chairs of the class room.  As the story progressed, our curiosity also increased.  Seeing this, other fellows sitting in the clam room would also gather around us.  Everyone's eyes would have been on Mahavir's face.  Sometimes he had to shorten the story a bit due to time constraints.  Even then, if the story was left due to the ringing of the next period bell, Mahavir would have completed it when he was discharged.  It would have also delayed our return home, but who cared then.  We would have made some excuse after reaching home.

So!  For two whole years we heard live telecast of films from Mahavir.  After coming in 12th, even once I bunked from college and went to watch films.  But, I could never develop the quality of narrating live telecast of the film like Mahavir.  Yes!  There was definitely a disadvantage of watching films continuously that Mahavir became careless towards studies and failed in 12th.  I regret it even today that one of our friends was left behind in studies because of his own and our ignorance.  I remember this much that Mahavir met me after taking admission in Inter again.  He asked me for my accountancy note book and text book.  So that it is easy to study.  After that I never met him again.  Not even on social platforms.
