हम कहां जा रहे हैं

अजीब तरह का उन्माद है। हम आंग्ल नववर्ष नहीं मनाते, यह गुलामी का प्रतीक है, हमारा नववर्ष तो अप्रैल में आता है, फिर भी सब बोल रहे हैं तो आपको 'आंग्ल वर्ष की शुभकामनाएं'। कुछ तो इसे ईसाई वर्ष ठहरा रहे थे। यह सब आज सुबह मुझे उन पत्रकार मित्रों से सुनने को मिला, जो स्वयं को धुरंधर, हर विषय का ज्ञाता और हिंदू धर्म का रक्षक समझते हैं। साथ ही स्वयं को इस तरह प्रदर्शित करने का स्वांग भी भरते हैं। हमारा नववर्ष कौन-सा है, विक्रम संवत है या शक संवत, वह किस हिंदी महीने में किस तिथि से शुरू होता है, हिंदी महीनों के नाम, उनका राशियों से संबंध, यह नववर्ष संक्रांति से शुरू होता है या पूर्णिमा से, हम सौर मास को मानते हैं या चंद्रमास को, सौर मास और चंद्रमास में क्या अंतर है, ग्रेगोरी कैलेंडर और विक्रमी कैलेंडर के बीच कितने साल का अंतर है, जैसे सवालों का उनके पास कोई जवाब नहीं।
चर्चा के बीच ही एक पत्रकार मित्र अपनी टांग ऊंची करते हुए बोले, विक्रमी संवत और ईस्वी संवत के बीच 500 साल का अंतर है। दूसरे पत्रकार मित्र भी भला कहां चुप रहने वाले थे, सो बोले, हमारा नया साल शायद वसंत पंचमी से आता है। मुझे उनके इस ज्ञान पर आश्चर्य हो रहा था, इसलिए सोचा थोडा़ और कुरेदकर क्यों न अपने ज्ञान की अभिवृद्धि कर ली जाए। इस बात को ध्यान में रखकर मैंने विनम्रता से पूछा, ग्रेगोरी कैलेंडर में तो तिथि को तारीख बोलते हैं, विक्रमी कैलेंडर में क्या बोलते होंगे। इस सवाल से पत्रकार मित्र भड़क उठे और चर्चा को मुगलकाल की ओर मोड़ने का प्रयास करने लगे। इधर मैं ज्ञानपिपासु फिर पूछ बैठा, हमारा यह कौन-सा महीना चल रहा है और इसकी आज कौन-सी तिथि है। बस! फिर क्या था, भाई साहब 2014 से पहले की शिक्षा पद्धति को दोषी ठहराने लगे। कहने लगे, हमें किसी ने परंपराओं से परिचित कराया ही नहीं।
मैंने कहा, परंपराओं से परिचित तो मुझे भी किसी ने नहीं कराया, फिर भी मैं उनसे अनभिज्ञ नहीं हूं। मैं अगर लोक संस्कृति और परंपराओं से परिचित होना चाहता हूं तो मुझे किसने रोका है। लेकिन, इसके लिए जड़ताओं से बाहर निकलना होगा। अगर ऐसा नहीं कर सकते तो फिर क्या जरूरत है दिमाग पर बोझ रखकर 'आंग्ल नववर्ष मंगलमय हो' बोलने की। और...हां! पत्रकार को तो पढ़ने-लिखने वाला माना जाता है। उम्मीद की जाती है कि उसे जनसामान्य से अधिक ज्ञान होगा और वो जो भी कहेगा, उससे दूसरे का ज्ञानवर्द्धन ही होगा। वह भावनाओं के वशीभूत होकर नहीं, बल्कि तर्क और विज्ञान की कसौटी पर परखकर ही अपनी बात रखेगा।
वैसे भी हमारे देश में तो सभी परंपराओं व संस्कृतियों का सम्मान होता आया है। महोपनिषद के अध्याय-4, श्लोक 71 में कहा गया है कि- अयं निज: परो वेति गणना लघुचेतसाम्। उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्।। (यह अपना बंधु है और यह अपना बंधु नहीं है। इस तरह की गणना छोटे चित्त वाले लोग करते हैं। उदार हृदय वाले लोगों की तो संपूर्ण धरती ही परिवार है।) हम पूरे विश्व को एक परिवार मानते हैं और हर संस्कृति एवं हर परंपरा का सम्मान करते हैं। स्वयं हमारे देश में ही अनगिनत संस्कृतियों का वास है। यहां हर संस्कृति की अपनी परंपराएं हैं, अपने रीति-रिवाज हैं और अपने-अपने नववर्ष हैं। अपने उत्तराखंड में ही हरिद्वार व ऊधमसिंहनगर के लोग चंद्रवर्ष को मानते हैं और शेष उत्तराखंड के लोग सौरवर्ष को। विक्रमी कैलेंडर भी भारत के कुछ ही हिस्से में ही प्रचलित है। बाकी बंगाल, पंजाब, महाराष्ट्र, गुजरात, केरल, असोम, गोवा, तमिलनाडु आदि प्रांत के लोग भी अपना-अपना नववर्ष मनाते हैं।
सिर्फ ग्रेगोरी कैलेंडर ही एकमात्र ऐसा कैलेंडर है, जिसे सरल एवं सहज होने के कारण विश्व के सभी देश मान्यता देते हैं। देखा जाए ग्लोबल वर्ल्ड में इसे गलत भी नहीं माना जा सकता। पूरी दुनिया का बैंकिंग सिस्टम और शेयर बाजार ग्रेगोरी कैलेंडर से ही संचालित होता है। इस कैलेंडर में तिथि, महीना आदि जानने के लिए किसी पंचांग या पंडित की जरूरत भी नहीं पड़ती। फिर भला इस कैलेंडर के हिसाब से पहली जनवरी को नववर्ष मनाने में किसी को आपत्ति क्यों होनी चाहिए। यह बात आज तक मेरी समझ में नहीं आई। आखिर ये जड़ताएं हमें कहां ले जाएंगी, यह सवाल हर किसी के लिए विचारणीय होना चाहिए।

It's a weird frenzy. We don't celebrate English New Year, it is a symbol of slavery, our New Year comes in April, yet everyone is saying 'Happy English Year' to you. Some were calling it a Christian year. I got to hear all this this morning from those journalist friends, who consider themselves to be well versed, knower of every subject and protector of Hinduism. At the same time, they also pretend to display themselves in this way. Which is our new year, is it Vikram Samvat or Shaka Samvat, in which Hindi month it starts from which date, names of Hindi months, their relation with zodiac signs, this new year starts from Sankranti or Purnima, we solar month They have no answer to questions like what is the difference between a solar month and a lunar month, how many years is the difference between the Gregorian calendar and the Vikrami calendar.
In the midst of the discussion, a journalist friend raised his leg and said, there is a difference of 500 years between Vikrami Samvat and Esvi Samvat. Other journalist friends were also going to remain silent, so they said, our new year probably comes from Vasant Panchami. I was surprised at his knowledge, so I thought why not increase my knowledge by digging a little more. Keeping this in mind, I humbly asked, in the Gregorian calendar, they say date to date, what would they say in Vikrami calendar. Journalist friends were enraged by this question and started trying to divert the discussion towards the Mughal period. Here I again asked, which month of ours is going on and what is its date today. Just! What was it then, brother started blaming the education system before 2014. Started saying, no one introduced us to the traditions.
I said, no one made me familiar with the traditions, yet I am not ignorant of them. If I want to get acquainted with the folk culture and traditions then who has stopped me. But, for this one has to come out of inertia. If you can't do this, then what is the need to keep a burden on your mind and say 'Happy English New Year'. And yes! Journalist is considered to be able to read and write. It is expected that he will have more knowledge than the general public and whatever he says will only increase the knowledge of others. He will keep his point not by being influenced by emotions, but by examining it on the basis of logic and science.
Anyway, in our country all traditions and cultures have been respected. In Mahopanishad Adhyay-4, Shlok 71, it is said that- Ayam Nij: Paro Veti Ganana Laghuchetsam. Udaarcharitanan Tu Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. (This is our brother and this is not our brother. Small minded people do this kind of calculation. The whole earth is a family for people with a generous heart.) We consider the whole world as one family and every culture and every tradition Let's respect. Innumerable cultures reside in our country itself. Here every culture has its own traditions, its own customs and its own new year. In Uttarakhand itself, the people of Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar believe in the lunar year and the people of the rest of Uttarakhand believe in the solar year. Vikrami calendar is also prevalent only in some parts of India. People of other states like Bengal, Punjab, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, Assam, Goa, Tamil Nadu etc. also celebrate their own New Year.
Only Gregorian calendar is the only calendar, which is recognized by all the countries of the world due to its simple and easy nature. If seen in the global world, it cannot even be considered wrong. The banking system and stock market of the whole world operates from the Gregorian calendar only. There is no need of any almanac or pundit to know the date, month etc. in this calendar. Then why should anyone have any objection to celebrating the New Year on January 1st according to this calendar? I have not understood this thing till date. After all, where will these inertia take us, this question should be ponderable for everyone.
