https://www.dinesh221.blogspot.com

https://www.dinesh221.blogspot.com

--------------------------------------------------------------Exile, which continues

----------------------------
Dinesh Kukreti
Although small exiles have become a permanent feature of my life, but this is such an exile, whose hope of ending is not visible far and wide.  This exile started on this day on 11th May 2008.  This exile was not found to be lost in a gaming game or to honor someone's words, but I accepted it happily myself.  However, while going out on this exile, I did not even imagine that the way back would be blocked as I progressed.  But, now it seems I was wrong.  The dream I was looking for, this was not the way.

Years ago, I read a ghazal by Abdul Hameed Adam, a sher of which I really liked.  The lion is that "Only one step was taken in the wrong way, the destination kept searching for me all the time."  It seems as if this Sher Adam said it for me only.  Then it seemed that my path may be full of struggles, but it is a road of hope for the time being.  Now it seems time has betrayed me.  Whenever I try to delve into the depths of the past alone, the truth shines like a mirror.  Realize that I am not made for this path.  This is the path of circumambulation, which revolves round and round and I cannot become a sunflower even if I want to.

Despite all this, my faith still stands.  Not on the path I am walking, but know myself and have faith, my stubbornness will not let it break.  Yes!  I will always regret the fact that I chose the wrong path, the result of which is this never ending exile.  If only!  Ignorance would also have been associated with this exile.  If only!  By hiding my identity during this period of exile, I would be able to walk on the path of happiness again.  But, here Kauravas have become very powerful.  He is guarded from every direction in time.  So!  These are all sentimental things and my aim is not to delude you into feelings, but to introduce you to feelings.

To be honest, today I did not know what to write.  He suddenly remembered that fourteen years ago, on this day, my feet were lying in Dronagri (it is believed that Guru Drona had meditated here, hence Dehradun has a name as Dronagri), so the feeling spread by itself.  Fall.  One of the reasons I consider the 14-year stay as exile is that I could never assimilate this city even if I wanted to.  I can't see anything here except the glitz and the pretense.  There is no sense of belongingness in the soil of this city.  That's why I often remember a sher from Umeed Fazli, which, with a slight modification, is something like, "These gloomy nights, these vagabonds, these sleepy loads, if I were in my city, I would have gone home."

However, I know that there is no reward for cursing the past, except for humility.  Life is the name of moving forward in any case, because history itself gives us the vision of science.  It is only by stumbling that one has the ability to recover.  That's why no matter what the circumstances were, I never learned to give up.  My lesson has always been, "O time, let the sand of time rub my heels, I am sure the water will come out from here."

-----------------------

Historic Lalpul

------------------------

Dinesh Kukreti

Years later, when I went to Lalpul located in the middle of Kotdwar-Dugadda on the Najibabad-Buakhal National Highway today, the memories of the past came back.  But, first let me introduce you to the past of Lalpul.  This bridge is built on the Khoh river, just ahead of the Ishta Siddha Baba (Siddhabali) temple of Kotdwar Bhabar.  Its distance from Kotdwar is about 3 km.  According to government documents, this 16-ton steel girder bridge was completed 74 years ago in 1948.  But, at present, it has become dilapidated due to heavy vehicles passing three times the capacity.  Being a road connecting a large part of Garhwal to the plain area, hundreds of small and large and loaded vehicles pass through this bridge daily.  This is also the main road connecting the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Center Lansdowne, so the movement of army vehicles also keeps on passing through this bridge.  Despite this, no one is paying attention to the condition of the bridge.

If you turn the pages of the past, the work of road construction from Dugadda towards Kotdwar, the gateway of Garhwal, started in the year 1901 during the British rule.  Then the road was taken out by cutting the hill in front of the Siddhabali temple.  Presently there is a warehouse of Public Works Department at this place.  Jhulapul was made to connect this road with the road cut on the hill of Tutgadera, through which the bullock carts passed along with the passers-by.  With the arrival of rail to Kotdwar in the year 1890, the settlement of Kotdwar-Bhabar started increasing.  Gradually, a small market also took shape here, so the movement of four wheelers also started from this road.  Therefore, the need to cut the road again was felt.  So, a short distance from Jhulapul, a steel girder bridge was built on the Khoh river, which is currently known as Lalpul.

To protect this bridge, a post was also built on the other end, which remained in existence till the nineties.  But, since then everything is in God's trust.  The bridge has also become dilapidated now and the way vehicles weighing 40 to 50 tonnes are passing on it indiscriminately, it can prove to be dangerous anytime.  Now a new bridge is to be constructed in place of this bridge which has completed its age, but when it will happen, it is difficult to say.  Due to this place being in the reserved forest area, the forest laws are creating obstacles in the way of the new bridge.  So!  Let's see what happens next.

To be honest, the lovely sanctuary around Lalpul has always been my favorite resort.  Used to come here often in childhood and student life.  On my way from Kotdwar to Dugadda in the early hours of the morning, I have seen the tiger passing along with the cubs several times.  During summers, elephants descend into Khoh river to drink water every day from here.  It is a pleasure in itself to watch them play in the river from the road near the bridge.  Even today, 500 meters before Lalpul, I kept looking at the elephant walking in the forest for a long time near the Siddhbali bridge.

In the scorching heat of Jeth's body, the shade of giant trees gives a feeling of relaxation to the body and mind.  Therefore, in the evening, there is a crowd of local people from Lalpul till here.  Yes!  It is so necessary that when a herd of elephants descends into the river from here, then one should stay away from it.  Well the good thing is that this herd of elephants never harmed anyone.  But, that does not mean that we should be careless.  However!  That's all today.  Tomorrow I will be back again with new experiences.  Goodbye until then!

Anecdote (10)

Raw Coconut (Part-2)

----------------------------

Dinesh Kukreti

We had reached our respective homes at the right time at exactly two o'clock in the night.  Then the Ramlila was staged till 2.15 pm.  While returning, we had also planned for the next day.  However, it was certain that the owner of the orchard would also be alerted on seeing the fruit broken from the coconut tree in the morning.  We had broken five huge coconuts, so the theft was bound to happen.  The same thing happened.  When we went there in the morning, the owner of the garden was putting up a wooden fence in the area which was towards the walkway.  Apart from this, he had also hung a bulb on a coconut tree.  So that there is light there at night.  But, we were also firm in our intention, so we were determined that no matter what happens, we will not deviate from our resolve.

At 9.30 pm we again went out to see Ramlila.  Watched Ramlila till twelve o'clock, ate groundnut worth five rupees and then returned to his destination.  Due to the bulb hanging on the tree, the light was spread there.  In such a situation, it was necessary that the situation should be checked first, whether the owner of the garden was awake or not.  We were lucky that no one was awake.  Now as per the plan yesterday's companion climbed the tree.  The first thing he did was to separate the bulb from the holder by holding it with a handkerchief.  Due to this, darkness spread again there.  Seeing the trouble that happened on the first day, we took a big and sharp knife with us.  So, there was no problem in cutting the coconut.  We cut five big coconuts.

The removed bulb was then fitted into the holder.  The companion climbing the tree, after removing the bulb, wrapped it in a handkerchief and kept it in the pocket.  After that we again headed towards the river island.  It did not take us much time to peel the coconut that night, so we reached home before 2 o'clock.  But, with the resolve that tomorrow I will clear my hands on the remaining five-six coconuts as well.  The next day, there was talk of coconut theft throughout the locality and we were getting excited in our mind.  According to the plan, after watching the Ramlila again in the middle of the night, we stormed into the garden.  But, by changing the timing by one hour, that is, exactly one o'clock in the night.

This time a hundred watt bulb was hanging on the tree, so the light was very bright.  It was the last night of our campaign, so we did not reattach the removed bulb to the holder, but threw it there in the field.  We broke six coconuts that night.  Now only 12-14 small coconuts were left on the tree, which was yet to take time to ripen.  It was good not to be too greedy.  Then there was no use of breaking small coconuts.  On the other hand, the owner of the garden has also become more cautious now.  He hung bulbs not only on coconuts, but also on three or four mango trees around him.  Along with this, he also started guarding the night.  After this incident, the residents of the locality also became very alert.  This has put an end to our mischief for the time being.

Anecdote (9)

Raw coconut (Part-1)

----------------------------------

Dinesh Kukreti

The rain of 1986 had passed and the era of Ramlilas was about to begin.  We used to be very excited about Ramlila.  Efforts were made to see the stage of Leela every day.  One of the reasons for this was that even TVs used to be in counting houses, that too black and white.  Although, then our age had increased by two years, but the process of dosages was still going on.  For this, new methods were invented.  The suggestions of all the friends were listened to and the dosage which seemed best, would be implemented.  This time the plan was that raw coconuts should be eaten by breaking them from the coconut tree located in the locality itself.  Till now none of us had ever eaten raw coconut.

In fact, at the beginning of our locality, about ten meters from the road, this coconut tree was (still is) in the garden adjacent to the walkway.  Coconuts were planted on it for the first time that year.  The tree was very tall, so there was no fear of the coconut being stolen, we had to overcome this challenge.  By the beginning of October, the Ramlilas had also started and we had to start the campaign in this period.  We had already kept a knife for cutting coconut and glasses for drinking coconut water.  Only four of us were involved in the campaign.  For the first two days, we kept taking stock of the situation for what kind of challenges might come up during this period.

Now we were mentally prepared to carry out the campaign.  Actually the coconuts were very high and could be broken only by climbing the tree.  So!  The next day we set out on the expedition.  We enjoyed Ramlila till about twelve o'clock in the night and then reached our work place in the garden.  After thoroughly inspecting the surroundings, it was decided that one of us would climb the tree, who is used to it.  For this the greatest friend of all of us took this responsibility.

However, climbing a coconut tree is not an easy task.  It is very important for the person to be trained for this.  However!  Our fellow started climbing the tree and finally reached the summit.  He had also climbed the tree with the knife with him.  But, it took him about half an hour to cut five coconuts.  After this, even getting down from the tree was no less than a challenge, due to which we finally overcome.  Now the question was, where to go to peel the broken coconut.  For this, we found the best place to be the tappad (island) of Khoh river, where no one was to be seen.  So, let's go towards that island.

The island is not far from the garden.  There will be hardly a distance of one kilometer between the garden and the island.  One has to cross Khoh river to reach there in September-October.  Although, then the water in the river is not very much, still it is very important to take precautions.  Incidentally, then the river was on the other side of the island i.e. in the eastern end, so we reached the island easily.  Then the work of peeling the coconut started.  By the way, the only knife we had was to peel the coconut with great difficulty.  For the first time, raw coconut was being eaten, so there was bound to be a feeling of happiness.

Amin's Cot (Part Three)

--------------------------------

Dinesh Kukreti

Amin ji got furious on hearing this.  Not on that mature lady, but on those who left her in the river with the cot.  Hearing their abuses and shouting, people also came out from the nearby houses.  However, no one could understand the matter right now.  But, when that mature lady scraped it, Amin ji exploded like a loudspeaker.  While uttering eight to ten traditional abuses, he said, "Raat ye khatula sath ju chhodi ae holu mi tain beach river ma, ju baag khai jandu ta" (Night don't know who left me in the middle river with a cot, if the tiger would have eaten)  ?  Hearing this, there were bursts of laughter.  We also wanted to laugh out loud, but the beauty of the occasion did not allow it.

On the other hand, the adult woman smiled and said, "Bhaiji!  You didn't even know that someone is lifting the cot. You must have been drinking alcohol. How are you getting wasted in this old age? If you bite Amin ji, then there is no blood, so quietly put the cot along with the bed on the shoulder.  And murmured, they walked towards their place. As soon as they left, laughter started reverberating in the atmosphere, a new story of alcoholics which had come into existence.

After circling up to the bank of the river, following Amin ji, we also returned home taking a pledge that we would never open our mouths in front of anyone about this.  On the other hand, after an hour or two, discussions of Amin ji became common in the entire locality.  Even Amin ji was on the tongue of the people living across the river.  Whoever you see, was saying only one thing that someone left Amin ji along with a cot in the river at night.  Who he must have been, I don't know.  Most of the people were saying that whoever did it, did it right.  Somebody collided with the guru of Bevde.  Hearing this, our calls were also getting raised, but then….

After years, when I am threading those links today, I am getting tickled in my body and mind.  Feeling like laughing out loud, but it is not possible.  Neighbors will gather.  They will feel that the loneliness has spoiled my mind.  We were really taking such an audacious step then.  But, had I not picked up, would I have been telling you such a wonderful story today.  Definitely not.  Know for sure, these tales of the past are our heritage and I am looking at you by putting this priceless heritage in words.

Anecdote (7)

Amin's Cot (Part-2)

-----------------------------

Dinesh Kukreti

It was the day we went to the procession.  Can't remember the date, but maybe that day was Saturday.  We were eagerly waiting for the procession to start.  The procession was to be known only in the area adjacent to the main market, about one and a half km from our locality.  Around ten o'clock in the night the procession reached its destination.  It was almost 11 o'clock for dinner.  After this the film started playing on VCR, but Apun did not feel like watching the film.  Who had to go on the mission.  So!  We stayed there somehow till twelve o'clock in the night and then set out to take the mission to the destination.  At exactly one o'clock we were near Aminji's cot.

Amin ji was snoring unconsciously.  We shook the cot, even then it didn't budge.  So, we rest assured that there is no problem anymore.  bus!  He remembered the Lord and took the cot on his shoulder and walked towards the road.  On reaching the road, we took a quick turn in the direction of Khoh river without hesitation.  In order to get out of the populated area as soon as possible.  Then the road ended at the end of the river.  Now from there a magnificent RCC bridge has been built over the river.  During the summer, the river receives only nominal water from the Siddhabali temple downstream.  So we were carefree and returned home after keeping Amin ji along with the cot on the other end of the river towards Siddhabali temple, about one kilometer away.

Returning from there, we had decided to go back to the river around 7.30 in the morning to see if Amin had risen or not and if he had got up, what was his reaction.  After that we went to sleep, but there was sleep that the pass was not taking its name.  In fact, in enthusiasm, we had definitely come to leave Amin ji in the river along with the cot, but now there was a fear that something untoward might happen.  Due to the dense forest nearby in the north-east direction, the activity of wild animals increases in the river during the night.  Even the tiger-guldar.  In such a situation, if someone attacked Amin ji?  Being intoxicated, he was not even in a position to resist.

But what could have been done now?  The arrow had gone out of the quiver and it was not possible to put it back in the quiver.  Now the only option left was to patiently wait for the dawn.  So!  As soon as he spent the night changing his eyes in his eyes and as soon as the morning dawned, he went out to take care of Amin ji.  When he reached near Amin ji's house, both his boys were seen.  Both were puzzled as to where Bapu had gone missing with the cot.  Both the brothers were speculating.  Slowly people started gathering there after listening to his words, so we thought it better to move away from there silently.

From there, as soon as we crossed the locality and reached the road, we saw that a person with a cot and bed on his shoulder was walking from the far side of the river.  We understood that it is Wah Amin ji.  Also, it was a relief to see that he is safe.  We slowly started moving forward.  Amin ji had reached near a house.  He was murmuring loudly as he went on.  Although his clear voice could not reach us, but his expressions were screaming that he was abusing us.  Everyone around knew him, so the mature lady standing outside that house sat asking him, "Bhaiji! Kakh bati aana chau, sye khatula lheki. Ar gali kai tain deena chau" (Brother! Where are you coming from?  Who else are you abusing about this cot).

-----------------------

Anecdote (6)

Amin's cot

-----------------

Dinesh Kukreti

If there are no mischief in childhood, then what kind of childhood?  It is true that I did not see a prosperous childhood, but I did live more or less a carefree childhood.  I have always had a deep relationship with soil, water and plants.  Even the games which belong to ordinary children (were), played them a lot.  Yes!  The slight difference in me from other children was that I was addicted to reading different types of comics then and spent most of the time looking for comics and reading them.  Actually, there was no money then, so for the comics, manipulations had to be done from here and there.  So!  This is a long story, which I will tell someday at leisure.  For now, let's have some fun.

It will be about the year 1984.  Then I used to study in ninth, rather I had done ninth, because then the annual examinations were over.  At that time, there used to be a lot of craze to see pictures on VCR and VCP.  Money was collected for that.  But, if someone is married, then the whole night used to get to see the picture for free.  Then, if two or three friends also attended a wedding, then we would return home only after watching two or three films.  It used to be a special occasion for me, because then there was no TV in my house.  This story is about one such marriage.

In those days the house where we lived on rent was the last house in my locality.  But, the house I am about to mention was the first one in my neighborhood across the road and the last one from my house.  The entire locality was not formed with the owner of that house, that is, there was a rift.  Landlord husband and wife, despite being elderly, were very quarrelsome.  bus!  While looking for the opportunity when there is a mistake with any person of the locality and start a fight with him.  The local people were also very careful with them, but both of them would deliberately try to provoke them.  That's why fights used to be seen once in a month.

A gentleman with two sons lived on rent in the house of this quarrelsome couple.  His age must have been 55-56 years then.  Very high class alcoholic.  After six to seven o'clock in the evening, he could not bear to remain conscious.  Being an Amin (a land measuring employee) in the tehsil, the upper income used to be decent, so he used to drink alcohol openly.  Many times people used to leave them at home in the state of unconsciousness at night.  We used to have a good filtering with his little boy i.e. me and my friends.  Amin never slept in the room at night during the summer days.  His cot was used in the open verandah and the verandah was directly adjacent to the road of the locality.

At that time, there was always some misery going on in my mind.  One day it came to mind that why should not Amin ji be left somewhere far away after picking up a cot in the night.  I shared Mann ki Baat with my friend, who was my age.  For six days at a time, we were busy in making this mission work.  Finding a way out of all the buts.  The mission had to be carried out very carefully, so such a day was chosen, on which day we are guests in a procession.  It was decided that except the two of us, no third person would be allowed to hear about the mission.

(...Wait till tomorrow to know what happened next.)
