Anecdote (10)
Raw Coconut (Part-2)
----------------------------
Dinesh Kukreti
We had reached our respective homes at the right time at exactly two o'clock in the night. Then the Ramlila was staged till 2.15 pm. While returning, we had also planned for the next day. However, it was certain that the owner of the orchard would also be alerted on seeing the fruit broken from the coconut tree in the morning. We had broken five huge coconuts, so the theft was bound to happen. The same thing happened. When we went there in the morning, the owner of the garden was putting up a wooden fence in the area which was towards the walkway. Apart from this, he had also hung a bulb on a coconut tree. So that there is light there at night. But, we were also firm in our intention, so we were determined that no matter what happens, we will not deviate from our resolve.
At 9.30 pm we again went out to see Ramlila. Watched Ramlila till twelve o'clock, ate groundnut worth five rupees and then returned to his destination. Due to the bulb hanging on the tree, the light was spread there. In such a situation, it was necessary that the situation should be checked first, whether the owner of the garden was awake or not. We were lucky that no one was awake. Now as per the plan yesterday's companion climbed the tree. The first thing he did was to separate the bulb from the holder by holding it with a handkerchief. Due to this, darkness spread again there. Seeing the trouble that happened on the first day, we took a big and sharp knife with us. So, there was no problem in cutting the coconut. We cut five big coconuts.
The removed bulb was then fitted into the holder. The companion climbing the tree, after removing the bulb, wrapped it in a handkerchief and kept it in the pocket. After that we again headed towards the river island. It did not take us much time to peel the coconut that night, so we reached home before 2 o'clock. But, with the resolve that tomorrow I will clear my hands on the remaining five-six coconuts as well. The next day, there was talk of coconut theft throughout the locality and we were getting excited in our mind. According to the plan, after watching the Ramlila again in the middle of the night, we stormed into the garden. But, by changing the timing by one hour, that is, exactly one o'clock in the night.
This time a hundred watt bulb was hanging on the tree, so the light was very bright. It was the last night of our campaign, so we did not reattach the removed bulb to the holder, but threw it there in the field. We broke six coconuts that night. Now only 12-14 small coconuts were left on the tree, which was yet to take time to ripen. It was good not to be too greedy. Then there was no use of breaking small coconuts. On the other hand, the owner of the garden has also become more cautious now. He hung bulbs not only on coconuts, but also on three or four mango trees around him. Along with this, he also started guarding the night. After this incident, the residents of the locality also became very alert. This has put an end to our mischief for the time being.
