बात जागर की चली है तो आपकी सहूलियत के लिए यह भी स्पष्ट कर दूं कि पहाड़ (खासकर गढ़वाल) में कौन-से नृसिंह को ईष्ट के रूप में पूजा जाता है। दरअसल, गढ़वाल में जिन नृसिंह (नरसिंह) की कुल देवता के रूप में पूजा होती है, वे भक्त प्रह्लाद की रक्षा के लिए हिरण्यकश्यपु का संहार करने वाले श्रीविष्णु के रौद्र अवतार नहीं हैं। वे तो नाथपंथी साधुओं की तरह चिमटा और बडी़-बडी़ जटाएं रखते हैं। उनके पास झोली, चिमटा, टिमरू (तेजबल) का सोटा रहता है। नागा साधुओं की तरह वे तन पर भस्मी (भभूत) लगाते हैं। उनके दस रूप (इंगला वीर, पिंगला वीर, जती वीर, थती वीर, घोर वीर, अघोर वीर, चंड वीर, प्रचंड वीर, दूधिया नृसिंह व डौंड्या नृसिंह) हैं, लेकिन जनमानस के बीच वे दूधिया व डौंड्या (डौंडिया) नृसिंह के रूप में ही रचे-बसे हैं।
इन्हीं दो रूपों के गढ़वाल में जागर (जागृत करना) भी लगते हैं। दूधिया नृसिंह शांत और डौंड्या नृसिंह अतिक्रोधी माने जाते हैं। देखा जाए तो प्रकारांतर से डौंड्या पौराणिक नृसिंह (श्रीविष्णु के चतुर्थ अवतार) का ही प्रतीक हैं। खैर! जागर लग रहे थे और हमारे ईष्ट नृसिंह जागृत (पश्वा पर अवतरित) हो उठे थे। रात्रि का तीसरा पहर समाप्ति की ओर था। कामकाजी लोगों के जागने का वक्त होने वाला था, लेकिन थके होने के कारण हमारे लिए कम से कम दो-तीन घंटे की नींद जरूरी थी। इसलिए पूजा के विराम लेते ही सब बिस्तर की शरण में चले गए। सुबह भी वक्त पर उठना था, क्योंकि पूजा अभी बाकी थी। पूर्णाहुति के रूप में खाडू (भेड़) और बकरे का भी अर्पण होना था।

सुबह स्नानादि के बाद पूजा की शेष सभी रस्म संपन्न हुईं। खाडू और बकरे की बांटी (हिस्सेदारी) लगी। परंपरा के अनुसार बकरे का सिर जागरी का होता है। बाकी हिस्से का सभी मिल-जुलकर भोग लगाते हैं। हमने भी पहले कचबोली़ (भुने बकरे के मांस का सलाद) आनंद उठाया और फिर भुटवा-भात (शिकार-चावल) का। जागरी की विदाई के बाद गांव घूमने का कार्यक्रम था, लेकिन नींद पड़ जाने के कारण मैं इसका हिस्सा नहीं बन पाया। हैरत इस बात की है कि बाकी लोगों ने मुझे जगाने का प्रयास भी नहीं किया। इसका मुझे आज भी अफसोस है और हमेशा रहेगा।

Memorable Night of Dev Puja

Our third night and fourth morning in the village were dedicated to Devi and Narsingh Jagars. The Jagri couple had reached Bhalgaon within the day itself. In the evening the whole family ate together and after that the ghadela (musical worship) started in the obare (ground floor room). The Patha (wooden vessel from which grain was weighed in the mountain) was filled with rice and the lamp was lit. Jagari had sat on the seat and the sound of the door-plate was beginning to oscillate on that memorable night. After the remembrance of the ancestors, it started with the awakening of the total goddess Balkumari. Then I was resting in my temporary accommodation (in uncle's house, where my sleeping arrangements were made). When uncle came to know about this, he asked me to go to the puja. After no qualms, I finally had to obey him.
If it is a matter of awareness, then for your convenience, let me also clarify that which Narasimha is worshiped as Ishta in the mountain (especially Garhwal). In fact, the Narasimha (Narasimha) who is worshiped as a total deity in Garhwal is not the fierce avatar of Sri Vishnu, who killed Hiranyakashipu to protect the devotee Prahlad. They keep tongs and big hairs like Nathpanthi sadhus. They have a bag, tongs, and Timru (Tejbal) stock. Like the Naga sadhus, they apply bhasmi (bhabhut) on the body. He has ten forms (Ingla Veer, Pingala Veer, Jati Veer, Thati Veer, Ghor Veer, Aghor Veer, Chand Veer, Prachanda Veer, Dudhiya Narsingh and Daundya Narasimha), but among the masses he is in the form of Dudhiya and Daundya (Daundiya) Narsimha. I am settled in myself.

Jagar (awakening) also takes place in Garhwal of these two forms. Milky Narasimha is considered to be calm and Daundya Narasimha is considered to be aggressive. If seen, Dundya is a symbol of the mythological Narasimha (fourth incarnation of Shri Vishnu) by the way. So! Awakened and our Ishta Narasimha was awakened (incarnated on the Pashva). The third watch of the night was nearing its end. It was time for the working people to wake up, but being tired, we needed at least two-three hours of sleep. Therefore, after taking a break from worship, everyone went to the shelter of the bed. Had to get up on time in the morning too, as the puja was yet to come. Khadu (sheep) and goat were also to be offered as Purnahuti.
After bathing in the morning, all the remaining rituals of worship were completed. There was a distribution (share) of khadu and goat. According to tradition, the head of a goat is that of Jagari. Everyone enjoys the rest of the portion together. We also enjoyed first kachaboli (salad of roasted goat meat) and then bhutwa-bhaat (hunting-rice). There was a program to visit the village after Jagri's farewell, but I could not be a part of it due to falling asleep. Surprisingly, the rest did not even try to wake me up. I regret it even today and always will be.
