द्वारीखाल से दुगड्डा तक पैदल यात्रा

चार दिन के प्रवास के बाद अब गांव को अलविदा कहने की तैयारी थी। सभी नाश्ता कर चुके थे और अपना सामान समेट रहे थे। गांव के कई लोग हमें मिलने आए हुए थे। कुछ अपनेपन से आग्रह कर रहे थे कि बीच-बीच में आ जाया करो। इससे घर की देखभाल भी हो जाती है और एक-दूसरे से मेलजोल भी बना रहता है। मेरी और इशारा करते हुए वह कह रहे थे कि सिर्फ तुम ही गांव की सुध नहीं लेते। ये दोनों परिवार (दोनों ताई) तो अक्सर आते-जाते रहते हैं। यह सुनकर उनकी बात रखने को मैंने भी कह दिया, "अब आता रहूंगा।" लेकिन, पुराने लोग कहते हैं ना, "मन इच्छा होती नहीं, हरि इच्छा तत्काल।" सो, ऐसा आज तक हो नहीं पाया।

खैर! सब से मेल-मिलाप कर कुछ देर बाद हमने द्वारीखाल की राह पकड़ ली। हमें छोड़ने चाची और गांव की एकाध महिला भी द्वारीखाल आई थीं। जहां तक मुझे याद है दोनों ताई गांव से कुछ सामान भी साथ ला रही थीं, उसे छोड़ने ही चाची व गांव की महिला साथ आई थीं। मैं ही खाली हाथ था, क्योंकि मुझे न तो किसी ने पूछा, न मेरी कभी ऐसी चाह ही रही। मेरे पास जो और जितना होता है, मैं उसी में खुश रहता हूं। ढाई घंटे लगे होंगे हमें द्वारीखाल पहुंचने में, लेकिन वहां पता चला कि बस-टैक्सी संचालकों की हड़ताल है। हालांकि, ऐसा कोई दावे के साथ नहीं कह रहा था, लेकिन स्थिति को देख लग रहा था कि लोगों की यह आशंका निर्मूल नहीं है।
अब मुश्किल यह थी कि कोटद्वार कैसे पहुंचा जाए। मुझे ज्यादा चिंता इसलिए हो रही थी, क्योंकि मैं इलाके से वाकिफ नहीं था। हालांकि, आधा घंटा इंतजार करने के बाद बडे़ ताऊजी बोले- "क्यों न दुगड्डा तक पैदल चला जाए।" सभी सहमत दिख रहे थे, लेकिन मैं असमंजस की स्थिति में था। ऐसा होना स्वाभाविक था, आखिर इतना लंबा रास्ता कैसे तय करते। मैंने यह सवाल ताऊजी से पूछा तो, वो बोले- "यहां से दुगड्डा बहुत नजदीक है, डाडामंडी होकर जाएंगे।" यह सुनकर मेरी उत्सुकता बढ़ गई। मुझे पहाड़ में नए-नए स्थानों की पैदल सैर करने का बेहद शौक है, सो मैंने तुरंत हामी भर दी। इसी बहाने डाडामंडी जैसे ऐतिहासिक स्थल के दीदार का मौका जो मिल रहा था।

मैं आपकी जानकारी के लिए बता दूं कि स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के दौर में दुगड्डा और डाडामंडी आजादी के आंदोलन की गतिविधियों का प्रमुख केंद्र रहे हैं। तब स्वतंत्रता सेनानी आंदोलन की रणनीति तय करने के लिए इन स्थानों पर गोपनीय सभाएं किया करते थे। फिर डाडामंडी मकर संक्रांति पर होने वाले ऐतिहासिक गिंदी कौथिग (गेंदा मेला) के लिए भी जाना जाता है। यहां भटपुडी़ व लंगूरी पट्टियों के बीच खेली जाने वाली गिंदी की एक दौर में पूरे गढ़वाल में धाक रही है। ऐसे महत्वपूर्ण स्थान से गुजरना मेरे जैसे इतिहास के विद्यार्थी के लिए गौरव की बात थी।
इसी भाव से मैं दुगड्डा तो क्या कोटद्वार तक भी पैदल जाने को तैयार था। द्वारीखाल से डाडामंडी के बीच तब द्यूसा गांव तक सिर्फ छोटे वाहन चलते थे। हमें भी यहीं से होकर गुजरना था। ठीक से तो ध्यान नहीं, लेकिन संभवतः छह किमी के आसपास होगी द्वारीखाल से डाडामंडी तक की दूरी। हो सकता है इससे कम या आधिक हो। इसी मार्ग पर बीच में तोली़ गांव भी पड़ता है। जब हम गांव के पास से गुजर रहे थे, तब ताईजी ने बताया कि यह मेरी दादी का गांव है। यहां काला लोग रहते हैं। मेरी दादी भी काला जाति की ही थी। डाडामंडी पहुंचकर हमने थोडी़ देर जीप-टैक्सी का इंतजार किया, लेकिन निराशा ही हाथ लगी।

डाडामंडी से दुगड्डा दस किमी होगा। बीच में मटियाली कस्बा पड़ता है, जो डाडामंडी से दो किमी दुगड्डा की ओर है। बहुत ही रौनक वाली जगह है यह। हरियाली के बीच दूर-दूर बने घर सम्मोहन बिखेर रहे थे। इस सौंदर्य को मैं तो भावविभोर होकर निहार रहा था। और... आखिरकार हम दुगड्डा पहुंच ही गए। सभी थककर चूर हो चुके थे। थका तो मैं भी था, लेकिन मैंने रास्तेभर प्रकृति के सौंदर्य को जी-भरकर निहारा था, इसलिए थकावट मेरे चेहरे पर नहीं झलक रही थी। अच्छी बात यह थी कि दुगड्डा से वाहनों की आवाजाही निर्बाध जारी थी, इसलिए अब पैदल नहीं चलना था।
दुगड्डा भी ऐतिहासिक नगर है। आजादी का आंदोलन ही नहीं, गढ़वाल की व्यापारिक गतिविधियों का भी केंद्र रहा है यह छोटा सा नगर। जब कोटद्वार में बसागत नहीं हुई थी, तब दुगड्डा ही गढ़वाल का प्रमुख बाजार हुआ करता था। व्यापारिक मंडी नजीबाबाद से माल सीधे दुगड्डा पहुंचता था। तब ढाकर (पीठ पर लादकर खाद्य सामग्री ले जाना) ले जाने का चलन था। दूरदराज से लोग टोलियों में पैदल ही दुगड्डा पहुंचते थे और यहां से खाद्य सामग्री, विशेषकर नमक व गुड़ की भेली ले जाते थे। इसे ही ढाकर ले जाना कहा जाता था। पहाड़ में तब नमक और गुड़ की बहुत ज्यादा मांग हुआ करती थी। इसलिए लोग दोनों का स्टाक जमा कर घर में रखते थे।
दुगड्डा, डाडामंडी, मटियाली आदि कस्बों के बारे में कहने को तो बहुत-कुछ है, लेकिन आज नहीं। कभी फुर्सत में तफ्सील से इनके बारे में चर्चा करूंगा। फिलहाल तो हमें कोटद्वार लौटने की जल्दी थी और सबके-सब टैक्सी मिलने का इंतजार रहे थे। कुछ देर में टैक्सी मिल भी गई और एक घंटे बाद हम कोटद्वार में थे। सच कहूं तो गांव की वो सुनहरी यादें मुझे आज भी भावविभोर कर देती हैं। काश! एक बार फिर गांव जाने का मौका मिल पाता...।

Final Installment (Part-XIII)
Walking Tour from Dwarikhal to Dugadda

After a four-day stay, it was now ready to say goodbye to the village. Everyone had had breakfast and was packing up their belongings. Many people from the village had come to meet us. Some were urging themselves to come in between. This also takes care of the house and also maintains a relationship with each other. Pointing towards me, he was saying that only you do not take care of the village. These two families (both tai) keep on moving frequently. Hearing this, I also told him to keep his word, "Now I will come." But, as the old people say, "The mind does not desire, Hari desire is instant." So, this has not happened till date.
So! After some time after reconciling everyone, we took the path of Dwarikhal. An aunt and a few women from the village also came to Dwarikhal to drop us. As far as I remember, both Tai were also bringing some items from the village, the aunt and the lady of the village came along to leave them. I was empty handed, because no one asked me, nor did I ever have such a desire. I am happy with whatever and what I have. It would have taken two and a half hours for us to reach Dwarikhal, but there it came to know that there is a strike by the bus-taxi operators. Although, no one was saying this with any claim, but looking at the situation, it seemed that this apprehension of the people was not unfounded.
Now the difficulty was how to reach Kotdwar. I was worried because I didn't know the area. However, after waiting for half an hour, elder Tauji said - "Why not walk till Dugadda." Everyone seemed to agree, but I was confused. It was natural for this to happen, after all, how could it have gone such a long way? When I asked this question to Tauji, he said - "Dugadda is very near from here, will go via Dadamandi." Hearing this made me curious. I am very fond of hiking to new places in the mountain, so I immediately agreed. On this pretext, the opportunity to see a historical place like Dadamandi was being given.
For your information, let me tell you that during the freedom struggle, Dugadda and Dadamandi have been the main centers of activities of the freedom movement. Then the freedom fighters used to hold secret meetings at these places to decide the strategy of the movement. Then Dadamandi is also known for the historical Gindi Kauthig (Marigold Fair) that takes place on Makar Sankranti. Here, in one round of Gindi, played between Bhatpudi and Languri belts, the whole of Garhwal is raging. It was a matter of pride for a student of history like me to pass through such an important place.
With this feeling, I was ready to walk till Dugadda even to Kotdwar. Only small vehicles ply between Dwarikhal to Dadamandi till Dusa village. We also had to pass through here. Not paying attention properly, but the distance from Dwarikhal to Dadamandi will probably be around six km. It may be less or more than this. Toli village also falls in the middle of this route. When we were passing by the village, Taiji told that this is my grandmother's village. Black people live here. My grandmother was also of black caste. After reaching Dadamandi, we waited for the jeep-taxi for a while, but got disappointed.
Dugadda will be 10 km from Dadamandi. In the middle lies Matiali town, which is two km from Dadamandi towards Dugadda. This is a very beautiful place. Amidst the greenery, distant houses were spreading hypnosis. I was looking at this beauty with emotion. And... finally we reached Dugadda. Everyone was exhausted. I was tired too, but I had been admiring the beauty of nature throughout the way, so tiredness was not visible on my face. The good thing was that the vehicular movement from Dugadda was uninterrupted, so there was no longer a walk.
Dugadda is also a historical town. Not only the freedom movement, this small town has also been the center of Garhwal's business activities. When Kotdwar was not settled, Dugadda was the main market of Garhwal. The goods used to reach Dugadda directly from the trading market Nazibabad. Then there was the practice of carrying dhakar (carrying food items on the back). People from far away used to reach Dugadda on foot in groups and from here used to take food items, especially salt and jaggery bhel. This was called taking away. There used to be a lot of demand for salt and jaggery in the mountain then. That's why people used to collect stock of both and keep them in the house.
There is much to be said about towns like Dugadda, Dadamandi, Matiali etc., but not today. In my spare time, I will discuss about them in detail. For the time being, we were in a hurry to return to Kotdwar and everyone was waiting to get a taxi. After sometime a taxi was also found and after an hour we were in Kotdwar. To be honest, those golden memories of the village still haunt me. If only! Once again got a chance to visit the village.
